INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The warm thaw is good news for roads and sidewalks, but could be bad news for homeowners. Roofing companies say they are starting to see problems.

Ice dams are when ice clogs up gutters, and they are the main concern for roofing companies.

The companies 24-Hour News 8 spoke with say that's a sign of a bigger problem. They said homeowners should beware that there isn't a quick fix.

With one glance at an older home, roofing experts already know a leak in the walls could be in its future.

Tim Williams runs T. Morgan Construction and knows his company is going to get a little busier in the coming days.

The phones start ringing in the office and people want you to come out and get rid of the ice that's on their roof, he said.

While it might seem like a good idea to chip away at the ice or remove the snow to keep a leak from happening, roofers disagree.

The first thing that you don't want to do is begin taking a hammer or a shovel or anything to your roof.

Williams said that might damage the gutters or shingles, creating more problems in the long run.

So rather than finding yourself cleaning up a flooded mess in your home, Williams says your best bet is prevention.
