RACINE A Kenosha-based roofing company has donated its time to complete a project on a Racine house after the homeowner fell off the roof head-first Oct. 12 while re-roofing with his sons.

Although Martin & Sons Roofing is solidly booked for months, Cindy Martin, who co-owns the company with her husband, Todd Martin, said that her husband went to check out the house and they decided that they could not leave the family without a proper roof.

The least you can do is help somebody out when theyre in that kind of predicament, said Cindy Martin. This man doesnt need any more stress.

The man is Jim Cook, 47, who fell while putting a tarp over the roof of his house in the 2000 block of Superior Street as a rain storm approached Oct. 12, said his wife, Cindy Cook.

Cindy Cook said that her husband was expected to be released from Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa on Monday, but he has a long recovery after breaking a leg, an arm, fracturing several ribs and receiving nine staples in his head.

Martin took on the project after hearing about it from the Cooks neighbor Mary Tumidajewicz.

Tumidajewicz, a machine operator at Warren Industries, said that she spent hours on the phone calling roofing companies in the area to see if one would be willing to complete the project for the Cooks, when the company arrived and agreed to complete the project for free.

Although the projects foreman, Zach Carper, 29, said that he had to work on Sunday to complete the project, he shrugged off the inconvenience to himself.

Thats alright, though, he said. These people dont need a bunch of water in their house.

He and two other employees on site Monday said that the neighbors coming together and being very gracious to Martins employees gave the job special significance for them.
