A metal roof can now be fabricated right on site with a new piece of Nelson Roofings equipment.

Housed on a unit the size of a tent trailer, the New Tech standing seam profile machine can be transported right next to a house.

When needed in the past, the company brought a machine over to Powell River from Vancouver Island.

Metal panels, which can be cut and custom-made for each home, are installed using hidden metal fasteners.

When you do fabricating on site, there is less handling, explains Ward Morcan, Powell River operations manager. That means less bending and fewer scratches.

He adds the biggest challenge for any roofing job is getting materials from the ground to the roof.

There is even a higher quality finish that resists saltwater corrosion and has a 25-year warranty on homes and cabins within 1,000 feet of the ocean.

One of the most demanding projects for Nelson Roofings Powell River crews was Wakefield Homes in Sechelt. It features a barrel-shaped roof, which had metal curved to a radius to accommodate the special construction. The crew also put the curved metal roofing on Starbucks building in Powell River.

Crews from this community went to Kelowna in November to roof the new BC Government and Service Employees Union building. They also worked on a project in Beaver Lodge, Alberta.

Successfully bidding on the roof for the new Willingdon Creek Village, a replacement for Olive Devaud Residence, has meant a busy start to 2014. With both shingle and torch-on sections the roof is a combined 59,000 square feet, says Ward. This has been a fun and challenging project. Our crews were constantly learning something new. Theres more stuff going on than a regular house roof.
