A new online registry created by a law enacted by the Legislature this year will help consumers avoid doing business with un-vetted roofers.

According to a news release from Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidts office, the registry is available at http://www.ag.ks.gov and lists 17 roofing contractors that have been issued certificates. The attorney generals office said it has 300 more applications to review since the Kansas Roofing Contractor Registration Act took effect July 1.

The act aims to help Kansas consumers avoid hiring unscrupulous or fly-by-night contractors who dont comply with registration requirements. It requires every roofing contractor to get a registration certificate from the states attorney general in order to provide its services for a fee in Kansas.

We have quickly implemented the new roofing registration system under the guidelines established by the legislature, Schmidt said. Our staff is working hard to efficiently process the registration applications, and we expect to issue many more registration certificates in the coming weeks.

The office legally has 60 days to review the applications, and the remaining roofing contractors will be added to the online directory as their applications are approved.
