Roofing Scam Leaves Home Owners With More Problems

For Adamsville resident Travis Smiddy, it has been more than a year and a half since he said he paid Inspector Roofing to make repairs, but his roof remains a mess.

"It's 2013, and I still don't have a (fixed) roof," said Smiddy, who was targeted by the scam. "My roof is still sloping. I have shingles off. I have water damage in one of my bedrooms that they were supposed to fix."

Smiddy is just one victim in a scam that investigators said spans McNairy, Madison, Henry and Crockett counties, along with other counties in Middle Tennessee. Insurance companies would write a check for the repairs, but officers said Nickey Evans pocketed the money.

"They would endorse the check then give the check to the roofing company, and no work would be done," said Lt. Brad Johnson with the McNairy County Sheriff's Department.

Authorities said Evans' company originally put up some legitimate roofs, but then vanished.

"They picked a few individuals that they actually put on a roof for, sort of to get their name into the neighborhood," said Lt. Johnson.

Theft victims said the damage has been crippling, with totals going anywhere from $1,300 to upwards of $15,000.

Nickey Evans has been charged in Madison County with a count of theft of property over $1,000. Authorities said more charges are expected to be filed.
