WAUKEGAN There was an emergency at Waukegan Roofing on a very windy morning recently.

Larson Forge, a foundry in Chicago, is a longtime customer of ours. They just had a section of their existing roof blow off, and come through the skylights into the building, said Bruce Diederich, owner of Waukegan Roofing. We have a crew on the way to assess the damage.

Waukegan Roofing has come a long way since M.C. DeThorne began the business in 1914 on Philippa Avenue in Waukegan. One hundred years later, the business has become a leading commercial, industrial and residential roofing contractor in the Chicago area. Diederich bought the business in 1998 from the Dave and Ed Hiner.

Their father bought the company in 1951, and died a couple years later, Diederich said. Dave and Ed took over the company along with their mother. They were still in high school, and from then on they owned it until I bought it.
