After more than 20 years, the founder and owner of Wichita Roofing is planning a name change for his company, whose business extends beyond south-central Kansas.

The company and its sister companies Lawrence & Topeka Roofing and Salina Roofing will be renamed Eaton Roofing & Exteriors in the fourth quarter of this year.

CEO Mark Eaton said the time has passed when having a local identity was key to building business.

As we have grown, the need to consolidate the business part of that is important to maintaining good profitability, he said Tuesday.

Eaton Roofing has about 35 employees among the separate offices. Its Wichita office is at 3821 Bounous. During its busy season, the company hires subcontractors, which can comprise as many as 12 crews consisting of eight people each, he said.

Eaton said about 80 percent of its business is residential steep-slope roofs. The remaining 20 percent is light commercial.

He said the first office was established in Wichita in March 1993. Lawrence was the second office to be established, in 1997, followed a couple of years later by Topeka. In about 2001, the Salina office was established, he said.

Eaton said maintaining separate names and logos for each office is costly and time-consuming.

Think along the lines of insurance policies, the filing of taxes, he said. Everything we do, we do it two or three or four times. I didnt expect this in 1993 but (consolidating to a single name) is a stepping stone to the future.

He said he is announcing the name change now because he anticipates it will take some time to complete all the paperwork of converting different companies to a single name.
