After almost three years of introduction of 12-car trains on the trans-harbour line of Central Railway (CR), the erection of sheds on the extended parts of the railway platforms is almost coming to an end. With little work left, the CR is firm to complete the remaining work by the end of May.

The 12-car trains on the trans-harbour line were started in December 2010 after extension of the platform, while erecting sheds was carried out at a later stage. However, the sheds are now at the final stage. At Nerul and Juinagar stations the work is complete as, these stations do not fall under trans-harbour line. Though the sheds are being made, the original architecture of the station premises was not altered. "The original architecture of stations on trans-harbour line was not changed between Turbhe and Airoli," said a CR official. He added that the reason for delay in erecting sheds was maintaining the original architecture of the stations.

The sheds constructed at Nerul, Juinagar and Sanpada stations are not as per the original architecture. "Maintaining the same architecture in all these stations was a little difficult. So, the normal shed was erected," said a Cidco official, requesting anonymity.

The safety of both commuters and workers was an important aspect when the construction of sheds was started. "While constructing the stations, we had maintained some standards. Even as the stations looked beautiful, safety of commuters was ensured. For example, gap between the footboard of a train and platform was such that nobody would slip through and get injured or killed," said a CR official.

The official added, "We had already introduced 12-car trains on trans-harbour line after extension of the platform. Now we are completing the works in phases. All the work is done with the permission from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS)."

All the stations in Navi Mumbai are having different and unique architectures. "While maintaining the architecture of Turbhe and Ghansoli station was a little difficult, with a little delay they are almost ready," said the official.

"With the completion of sheds, we will not have to worry of the scorching heat of in summer and water in monsoon," said a commuter.
