BURGLARS have ransacked a series of sheds in Colchester under cover of darkness.

Police are appealing for information following six burglaries along Salary Close and Bromley Road.

Sheds, garages and outbuildings were targeted overnight between Sunday and Monday.

Tools and gardening equipment were stolen during the latest spate of thefts of this kind.

Insp Barry Atkinson said: "We believe suspects unknown have jumped over a fence from the woods into the back garden of one of the properties and then have fence hopped from garden to garden.

We would like to speak to anyone who may have seen anything suspicious or who has any information.

Since late May there have been 20 offences of this type in Colchester and surrounding villages and police are urging people to take care to lock up anything of value.

Crime reduction advisor Stephen Armson-Smith said: "Garages, sheds and barns are always going to vulnerable but in a number of offences the buildings have been either insecure or had inadequate locks and security.
