Operators of a chicken farm where giant sheds were built almost 60ft too long should be made to abide by their original planning permission, a senior councillor has said.

Cllr Ian Bates was disappointed that a major player in the industry should have breached its approval for the sheds at Hemingford Grey.

He said planners at Huntingdonshire District Council should treat the problem in the same way as the cinema at St Neots where part of the structure was moved after it was found to have been built in the wrong place.

Cllr Bates, a former leader of Huntingdonshire District Council who represents the area of the chicken farm, said: It is very, very disappointing that a company of this stature hasnt been able to manage the project to the permissions it has been granted.

Amber Real Estate Investments, part of one of the countrys biggest chicken producers, has had to reapply for permission for the eight chicken sheds which opened recently at the site near the St Ives junction on the A14.

The sheds are about 338ft long instead of 280ft which had been approved.

Residents who had been concerned about the impact of the farm, which replaced a smaller unit, spotted that the buildings were too big and alerted enforcement officers at the council.
