BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WIAT)- The outside of Theress Jones' home is in bad condition. "Up top, it probably is in need of a gutter for the water," said Theress Jones.

But that's not it. The siding is turning green, paint is chipping and the roof needs work done.

"It's an older type home and it's like it needs insulation around the windows and the doors," said Jones.

Money for her repairs is low. Getting help from anywhere would be beneficial and appreciated. When I explained to her a free program Birmingham provides to fix homes, she seemed relieved.

"Friends of mine have been trying to help us out, doing lil odd stuff around the house, but now since I know about this, I hope this helps," mentioned Jones.

In order to get help, certain requirements must be met. On top of being a Birmingham resident, you have to own and live in your home. You also have to meet a certain income level.

Money from the Department of Housing and Urban Development will allow workers to do things like paint, repair decks and build handicap ramps. The work will be done by hundreds of volunteers from Metro and World Changers, as well as Habitat for Humanity.

"There are so many families who just can't make ends meet to get that roof fixed that's leaking into their home," mentioned Beth Bradner, Habitat for Humanity.

But that's something volunteers will look forward to doing.

"People really do enjoy it when they come out and volunteer," said Bradner. "It's a blessing Birmingham need to step up and do a lot of things," mentioned Jones.
