SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

A Savannah neighborhood did it's best to keep a part of their community intact, but Wednesday was D-Day for a centuries old Oak.

The Victory Heights Community off of Skidaway Road rallied around their leafy friend until the end.

It took workers two days to take down what took three lifetimes to grow up, and like family, when you live with something all your life, it's difficult to let go.

"My dad grew up here, and showed me how to climb it," Terry Moore remembered.

Moore grew up here too, in the house his grandfather built.

"When this subdivision was originally built, it was just the tree and granddaddy's house and five others, and the rest was pasture," he said.

But in early October, the City of Savannah said the tree had to come down; the neighborhood association president got a second opinion from another arborist from the University of Georgia.

"We didn't like the big orange x, and I do like second opinions, so that arborist gave us a tree analysis and really good explanation on the health of the tree," said Felix Maher, Victory Heights Neighborhood Association President.

So with two arborists saying the tree was just too unhealthy, it became a safety issue, and since the tree was actually growing in the right of way, which is city property, it was a liability.
