MANKATO The second phase of a window replacement project on the Blue Earth County Historic Courthouse suffered a setback when bids came in 20 percent higher than expected.

The County Board voted Tuesday to rebid the project, which would replace windows on the second and third floors and in the clock tower of the 128-year-old courthouse with more energy-efficient panes. The replacements are also to look more like the original windows than the aluminum versions installed during a previous remodeling.

The estimated cost of the second phase was $200,000, the same estimate as for the first phase that replaced 56 windows on the ground and first-floor levels. But unlike the winning bid last June, which came in at $138,000, the lowest bid this time was $240,200 with the only other bid topping $278,000.

The rebid will include options for staging the work in case the next bids also comes in substantially above $200,000 to do the job.
