Zanieski to represent Ward 1

WEIRTON - Weirton City Council unanimously voted to approve a replacement to fill the vacancy of the Ward 1 council representative at its regular meeting Monday.

Bill Zanieski, who currently serves as chair of the city's Human Rights Commission, will be sworn in as the new Ward 1 councilman 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Council Chambers at the Municipal Building.

"I'd like to thank City Council for selecting me. I look forward to serving the City of Weirton, responding to the citizens of Ward 1 and also being a responsible administrator in this city," Zanieski said. "It's something that I think I will enjoy doing. I'm retired so I have plenty of time to devote to this."

Zanieski resides on McKinley Road and has been a lifelong citizen of Weirton. He graduated from Madonna High School in 1964 and then went on to Syracuse University in New York, where he earned a degree in sociology in 1969. He eventually achieved a master's in sociology from West Virginia University in 1992.

Zanieski said he is familiar with the current council roster, noting that some councilmen have even been his students in the past. Though he has no particular agenda just yet, Zanieski said he looks forward to learning all about his new role on City Council.

He had no comment regarding the recently expanded business and occupation tax, which will go into effect on August 1.
