We would like to respond to a recent letter to the editor published (Re: Penticton Western News, Feb. 4, Fanning the flames) regarding the FortisBC advanced meter program.

Safety is a priority in every project we undertake. For our Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project, safety is considered from the testing and certification of our meters, to the safe installation process and the safety of the infrastructure itself.

We are unaware of any reason why the installation of any properly installed and certified electric meter, including an advanced meter, would impact home insurance. Advanced meters go through testing and quality assurance, comply with all safety requirements from professional and safety organizations, such as IEEE and ANSI, are certified by Industry Canada and approved by Measurement Canada.

There was found to be a decline in the frequency of residential structure fires associated with electricity after advanced meters were installed in the Lower Mainland, according to a report co-authored by the Fire Chiefs Association of British Columbia. An important reason we are doing this project is to try to reduce instances of electricity theft, which often involves hazardous wiring that creates safety issues for emergency officials, utility workers and the general public.

We are committed to providing a safe and reliable supply of electricity at the lowest reasonable cost, and the advanced meter program is one way were generating savings for our customers. The program will pay for itself and create savings for customers over the life of the project by preventing electricity theft and reducing the costs of meter reading, while upgrading meters to meet changing Measurement Canada guidelines.
