UK Uncut: 'Street Parties' Target 'Architects of Austerity' - May 27, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Hundreds of activists descended on the home of Deputy Prime Minister, in London today, naming him one of the 'architects of austerity' and challenging his role in pushing devastating public sector cuts to education and social services.

Anti-austerity protesters outside UK Prime Minister Nick Clegg's declare, 'Don't Cut Our Future.' (Photo: UK Uncut) Reports said disabled campaigners had secured the quiet residential street shortly beforehand by chaining their wheelchairs together. This demonstration was one of perhaps a dozen 'alternative street parties' around the country organised by UK Uncut in what is expected to be a series of protests.

UK Uncut have said that the street parties are are designed to resist the government's cuts and celebrate the much-needed alternatives to austerity. They plan to block roads and hold street parties that will celebrate public services and a future decided by the people, not big business and a cabinet of millionaires.

A UK Uncut supporter outside of Clegg's home, Jean Sandler, 42, said to The Guardian: "Nick Clegg is one of the architects of austerity. He's a millionaire and lives in a million-pound home.

"The cuts are a political choice of this government and the cabinet of out-of-touch millionaires. They are not necessary. No one voted for Cameron and Clegg's disastrous plan that means that we end up paying for the banks' crisis."

UK Uncut: Street Parties target 'architects of austerity'

UK Uncut will hold street parties around the country that will directly target high profile individuals they see as responsible for the government's cuts, dubbed the architects of austerity. The anti-cuts group promises that the protests in ten cities across the UK today will take a radical new direction and will not be quickly forgotten or easily ignored by the government, tax avoiders or City bankers.

UK Uncut have said that the street parties are are designed to resist the government's cuts and celebrate the much-needed alternatives to austerity. They plan to block roads and hold street parties that instead of celebrating the Jubilee, will celebrate public services and a future decided by the people, not big business and a cabinet of millionaires.

In London, details of the target are a closely guarded secret, but the group has said that the street party will be held on the streets 'of high profile people who caused the cuts'. Hundreds of people are expected to turn out to what the group intends to be a fun and family friendly day out that brings the message home to the 'architects of austerity'. Comedians, musicians, public sector workers and activists concerned about the impact of the cuts on women, the NHS and welfare state are all taking part in the events.

Tower Trail – Video - May 27, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

26-05-2012 08:39 Clackmannanshire's collection of tower houses (dating from the 14th and 15th century) were built by Scotland 's aristocrats to be near the royal court at Stirling Castle . Each tower, has it's own fascinating history, and formed part of a wider complex of buildings, including great halls, courtyards and living quarters. Being so close to the royal court, these tower houses played host to royalty including Mary Queen of Scots, witnessed the plotting of the ill fated Jacobite Rebellion of 1715 led by the 6th Earl of Mar, and came under attack and were damaged by fire as a result of war and dispute over the centuries. Menstrie Castle Menstrie Castle was built c1560 as a manor house by the Alexander family. It was the birthplace of Sir William Alexander, who had an illustrious career during the reign of James VI and I, becoming Principle Secretary of State for Scotland in 1626. In 1621 he began to establish a new colony called Nova Scotia , but the scheme failed and Sir William lost money. Nonetheless, he improved Menstrie Castle and his town house in Stirling in 1633, when he was invested 1st Earl of Stirling and Viscount Canada . Neglected for a number of years, Menstrie Castle was saved during the late 1950's and converted into apartments, but two ground floor rooms were restored as a display area, with dedicated exhibitions about Nova Scotia . These are now managed by the National Trust for Scotland . Open: Wed and Sun 2.00pm - 5.00pm (1st April - 30th September ...

Remodeling putting contractors to work: Housing permits up but numbers small; financing key for commercial projects - May 27, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

SANTA CRUZ Local contractors are reporting an uptick in work this spring, a welcome change after the recession hit four years ago, followed by the housing crash and a weak recovery.

Thats the report from nine out of 10 members of the Santa Cruz Construction Guild responding to a query from the Sentinel.

Call it the slow thaw from a previously frozen landscape, said Michele Landegger of Boa Constructor Building and Design in Santa Cruz. Inquiries are increasing and actual jobs are breaking ground.

Landegger said she is wrapping up the design phase for two residential remodel-addition projects that are moving forward.

Homeowners that can afford to build now are in an excellent position to get the most for their money, she said, noting the number of quality builders outnumber the projects available.

She estimates the volume of new and remodel construction, which had dropped to 10 percent of what it was before the crash, is now up to 50 percent.

Homeowners making inquiries are looking at modest projects because the amount of funding available to them has decreased in direct ratio to their equity, she added.

We are mostly seeing activity along the water, said Julia Bettencourt of Plumbed Elegance. Investors are back in and spec remodeling is picking up. ... People who bought within the last five years and held the property

She sees homeowners more comfortable with bathroom remodels than kitchens since it is typically a smaller and quicker investment.

Shes also seeing back orders because factories slowed production during the downturn and just werent ready for the volume of demand that we are now experiencing.

PFT: Charlie Sheen says he didn't buy LT's ring - May 27, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

    AP

Jets linebacker Bart Scott is the latest player to come forward to say that even though the game of football has been great for his own life, he doesnt think its worth the risk of injury for his son.

Scott told the New York Daily News that even though he has been richly rewarded for playing the game he loves, he doesnt believe its the right sport for most people.

I dont want my son to play football, Scott said. I play football so he wont have to. With what is going on, I dont know if its really worth it. . . . I dont want to have to deal with him getting a concussion and what it would be like later in life.

Keeping kids inside a protective bubble has plenty of risks, too there are a lot more kids struggling with health problems related to obesity than there are kids struggling with health problems related to football but Scott said his 7-year-old son will get his exercise through non-contact sports.

He can play baseball, Scott said. I really dont want him boxing, either, even though he wants to box. I wont let him box. Its not worth it. The most important thing for me is him being around and me being able to spend a long time with him and Im sure, at the end of the day, all the things Im able to buy him from playing football, hed much rather have me.

Scott also knows, however, that if a kid is intent on playing football, its awfully tough for his parents to stop him.

I cant stop him from doing what he wants to do, but I would advise him and try to push other things in his face that may interest him, he said. The more you tell him not to, the more hes going to do it. I would support it, because hes my son, but I also would try to push baseball in his face.

If 7-year-old B.J. is as intense as his dad, its probably safe to say he cant wait to get out on the football field, no matter how much his dad tries to steer him in another direction.

Sewage system under way - May 26, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

SMITHFIELD - The lagoon sewage treatment system being installed at Friendship Park is part septic tank, part swimming pool and part lawn sprinkler.

Add it all together and the Friendship Park board says it will bring development to the park.

James Branagan, a member of the Friendship Park board, said the lagoon sewage treatment system is pretty basic, even though the price tag is about $435,000 - much lower than constructing a conventional sewage treatment plant.

The park board received $212,000 in a grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission and $61,000 from the Ohio Mid-Eastern Governments Association. The commissioners also donated $100,000 in county recreation funds. Branagan said the $100,000 from the county commissioners was used for the design.

The lagoon sewage treatment system sits on a hill above the lake. The park board still has to install about 5,500 feet of pipes and two lift stations to connect the peninsula at the lake and the campgrounds.

The system begins with the sewage being pumped into a buried tank that will separate the solids and liquids, much like a septic tank. The liquid gets pumped into a lagoon covered with thick plastic, where an aerator will allow naturally occurring biological growth to "work" on the liquid for a period of about two weeks.

The water then is pumped to a filtering system where organic solids will be filtered out. The water then is pumped back into the lagoon.

"The process gets a cleaner effluent," Branagan said.

The water then is put through a sand filter, where any remaining solids are filtered out. Branagan said the sand filter will help eliminate ammonia from the liquid, especially in colder weather.

The water then gets pumped into a tank which will add chlorine. Branagan said chlorine tablets, similar to what is added to a backyard swimming pool, are dropped into the tank. He said the chlorine will kill any type of virus and bacteria.
