Bethlehem art gallery plans public art installation to bring attention to Five Points neighborhood - June 25, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Reinaldo Valentins venture as an art gallery owner isnt just about making his business successful.

The owner of NewVox Art Gallery in Bethlehems Five Points area believes his gallery can help revitalize the neighborhood.

A new project combines both goals. Streetfluence will be a public art exhibition on several sites spanning the neighborhood.

Whitehall Township-area artist Tom Evans will be doing spray-paint portraits of neighborhood residents on both sides of the former Ye Olde Ale House. Bethlehem Township artist Jason Schwab will be doing a cityscape inspired by the Five Points area on the side of a building at Wyandotte and West Fourth streets.

Artists Stephen Haigh, of Philadelphia, Joel Mambru, of Allentown, and Matthew Nixon, of Easton, will be doing murals inside the parking garage on West Fourth Street.

Bethlehem artist Lavanya Patricella will be yarn bombing the neighborhood, or wrapping her knitting around trees or light poles.

Developer Larry Eighmy owns both buildings, as well as the West Fourth Street parking garage, and is strongly supportive of the project, Valentin said. Eighmy couldnt be reached for comment last week but hes regularly spoken of the areas potential and his plans for a zero-carbon neighborhood there.

Schwab plans to draw inspiration from the neighborhood in the cityscape hell be making out of wheat paste on the side of Eighmys planned gastropub. He plans to use local business names on the billboards he will incorporate in his scene.

Streetfluence is the first of several public art installations Valentin has planned. While he waits for NewVox to be better known and he awaits crucial on-street parking in the neighborhood he plans to bring his gallerys artwork to other parts of the Lehigh Valley. His next public art project will involve a mobile truck outfitted by collage artists.

Oak Creek mayor keeps retail bar high at Delphi site - June 25, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Retail developers are expressing significant interest in the former Delphi site in Oak Creek, according to newly elected Mayor Steve Scaffidi. However, the retailers that are being pitched for the site dont match the citys vision for the project, called Drexel Town Square.

The stores that have been proposed so far are chain stores similar to stores that are already in Oak Creek, said Scaffidi, who declined to name the specific retailers that have been proposed.

Im not interested in filling the site up with something (similar to what) we already have up and down Howell Avenue, he said. Its got to be a destination place that isnt offered in other places. Im going to hold out for that. I understand that makes the project more challenging.

The 85-acre former Delphi plant site is located southwest of Howell Avenue and Drexel Avenue in Oak Creek.

Earlier this year, city and Wispark officials announced the development plans for the site. The eastern third of the site will feature junior box retail stores (about 20,000 to 40,000 square feet each) and some outlot retail development. The middle third of the site will have a Main Street lined with multi-story buildings with retail on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors. A Town Square on the Main Street is expected to be a gathering place and could be used for ice skating in the winter and farmers markets in warmer months. The Main Street area will also be the site of the citys new library and City Hall. The western third of the site will have apartment buildings similar to those in Milwaukees Historic Third Ward.

The entire development consists of 880,000 square feet of space, including 255,000 square feet of retail space, 70,000 square feet of civic space (for the library and City Hall) and 555,000 square feet of residential space.

Interest in the residential component of Drexel Town Square is strong, and Scaffidi expressed confidence that the apartments will attract tenants. City officials have interviewed about six multi-family housing developers that have expressed an interest in building the residential component of the development and plan to select one soon.

We have had a strong interest in the residential aspects from numerous developers, said Scaffidi, who declined to name the developers. Those will be unique residential units. Residential is the easy part of it. Well have no problem filling those things.

Robert Monnat, chief operating officer for Milwaukee-based multi-family housing developer Mandel Group Inc., said the Drexel Town Square project is a good move by Oak Creek and will help it attract an increasing number of residents that want to live in dense, walkable, mixed-use environments.

Theyre working to reinvent the climate of Oak Creek and provide a whole different sort of lifestyle that isnt currently available there, Monnat said. This is a great idea. If you dont take this step to bring about change, (Oak Creek) will probably never be anything other than what it is today. If (Oak Creek) wants to remain relevant, it has to do things that might seem kind of forced, but 10 years from now people will say, Of course thats what they should have done. I think it will be successful.

‘Home on the Range’ cabin to celebrate July Fourth - June 25, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

On July Fourth, one of the most iconic cabins in America will turn 140 years old.

And, on that day on the banks of Beaver Creek in Smith County, there will be a party complete with music, food and plenty of people to celebrate one of the worlds most beloved folk songs, Home on the Range.

The cabin and surrounding land inspired Brewster Higley in the fall of 1873 to write a six-verse poem he called "My Western Home.

It was later set to music and became the words to Home on the Range, the Kansas state song.

The celebration on July 4 is a fitting tribute to the support Kansans have shown in recent years to help restore the cabin, said El Dean Holthus, whose aunt and uncle, Ellen and Pete Rust, owned the property for nearly 75 years. He is now helping coordinate efforts to restore the cabin.

The July event also will give Kansans a chance to see the cabin before major restoration efforts begin.

Finally we can tell the people in Wichita and all over the state who have supported us that something is finally going to happen, Holthus said.

Contract bids will be let this summer.

Our hope is that the work can be completed by July 4, 2014, which would allow us to rededicate with a two-day celebration, he said.

The cabin, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, needs $80,000 to $100,000 in repairs to restore it to its original integrity.

Tour highlights preserving history - June 25, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

Tuolumne County residents and professionals took a stroll through local history on Friday as organizers of a preservation conference led a walking tour of historic buildings in downtown Sonora.

During the fifth annual Keeping Time seminar, dozens of participants got to see and hear about the preservation and restoration efforts of three downtown buildings the Hardin home, City Hall and the Yosemite House.

Each of the buildings represents an important era for Tuolumne County. The Hardin home was built during the second gold rush, City Hall was built in the Depression era and the Yosemite House was built during the first Gold Rush. And in each case, the buildings are used for modern functions while maintaining their historic character.

During the tour, Murphys architectural historian Judith Marvin and Sonora historian Pat Perry discussed the origins of the structures, the efforts to preserve them and ways for people to record other historic places.

Every one of these places are places that matter, and are places that were important to people, said Marvin. They need to be recorded before they disappear.

The only residential building on the tour, the Hardin home on Washington Street saw a complete restoration this last year, Marvin said. The house is located across from the iconic red church, and the family that first lived in the home still owns the property today.

Though built in 1910, the home changed its appearance after a remodel in the 1920s. Marvin said its a perfect example of a craftsman house, and she said the recent restoration work was done to the greatest detail to include the proper windows, dormers and lights.

Its just a wonderful, wonderful home, she said, later adding that the remodel took about two years. Its just wonderful when somebody does it right.

During the tour, Perry gave a short history of the Sonora City Hall building, tracing it from its construction with money from the Works Progress Administration for a fire station in 1939 to itsfinal overhaul for office space only decades ago. After the talk, participants gathered in front of the city hall, where the old door for fire engines is still visible.

KUWAIT CITY (AP) - Kuwait's minister of information says the Cabinet has submitted its resignation following the dissolution of parliament last week.

Monday's move is seen as a formality, but it further muddies the OPEC member's political future. Kuwait's constitutional court last week ruled that parliamentary elections held in February were unconstitutional, and it restored the previous legislature.

Information Minister Mohammed Abdullah Al-Sabah described the Cabinet's latest decision as a procedural step aimed at complying with the court ruling.

If Kuwait's ruler accepts the resignation, lawmakers will be able to form a new government.

The previous parliament set to be reinstated is seen as more liberal and supportive of the government than the one elected in February, which is dominated by hard-line Islamists and conservative tribal allies.

Obama’s empty cabinet - June 25, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

We asked members of our Kitchen Cabinet to briefly share some of their strongest holiday memories with us, and well share them with you all this week. Today, our resident wine experts talk about looking into their holiday kitchens and staring into the abyss.

From Steven Kolpan, professor and chairman of wine studies at the Culinary Institute of America:

Twenty-five years ago, when I was not yet a JewBu (a Jew listing toward Buddhism, a bubbaleh for Buddha), I celebrated Hanukkah with a latke party fraught with scandal and miracle.

Getting the Champagne was easy, but making the latkes was hard. I wanted them to be thin, almost crepe-like, but a thin potato batter fried in a very hot Griswold is a recipe for burning. I added more potato, more matzo meal, more onions and more eggs to bind it together, and soon the latke batter just laid there in a lump.

In a subdued panic, I called my mother, who told me the secret to making the lightest latkes was to use seltzer in the batter. The bubbles, according to my mother, would open the pores of the dough, unlike flat water, which just makes things wet. I had no seltzer, but a couple of bottles of Gerolsteiner fizzy mineral water in the fridge. My mother was dubious, even scornful: German mineral water for Jewish latkes was her idea of a shandah a scandal.

I added the Gerolsteiner, and suddenly the batter was perfect; the pancakes were transformed into potato pillows. Idaho spuds, Italian extra virgin olive oil, Hudson Valley eggs, apple sauce and sour cream, and that German mineral water conspired to produce hot, crunchy, oily, rich, light, sweet, savory delights all to be enjoyed with French Champagne. My friends enjoyed themselves immensely all smiles and shiny, oily lips.

The symbolism of latkes is really about the oil theyre fried in: During the revolt of the Maccabees, the story goes that there was only enough oil in the temple to provide light for one night, but by some miracle it lasted eight. On that Hanukkah 25 years ago, in a small way, I discovered more than I realized I had, too. And now I always have seltzer in the house; it reminds me of my mother.

    . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

From Tara Q. Thomas, senior editor at Wine and Spirits magazine:

My sister married a Thai guy. Super sweet, with a mom whos even sweeter. That first Christmas when she joined our family for the holidays, we wanted to do whatever it would take to make her feel welcome.

The benefits of sustainable energy: Little things such as caulking, weather stripping and insulating home can save money - June 25, 2012 by Mr HomeBuilder

The options for sustainable energy in the home are growing beyond solar panels.

Diana Maneta, executive director of the Montana Renewable Energy Association, answered some of our questions about other large and small options. Her answers are edited for length.

What are some of the other options for homeowners beyond solar panels?

There are a few good options:

There is solar thermal for water heating. With a solar water heater, you will have a panel on your house with coils with nontoxic antifreeze, and the heat obtained from the sun heats the coils. You would still need another source of water heating as a backup.

There are small wind systems. Here in Missoula, wind is not a great resource. In other places in the state, where it is very windy, it makes sense to get a small wind system installed. You also need enough space at least an acre and you need to consult local zoning ordinances.

And ground-source heat pumps. These are taking advantage of the fact that a few feet below us, the ground maintains a much more constant temperature. You dig trenches and lay coils a few feet down in your yard. Theyve got this kind of antifreeze coolant running through them, and the ground being warmer than the air, it will transfer the heat into the coils. And its the opposite in the winter.

Theres micro hydropower. Rather than damming a river, you just divert some water from the river or stream, and that water runs through a turbine and produces electricity. This is only available to people with running water on their property, and it should have at least a 10-foot drop. You would also need to have the rights to use the water.

What are some small changes homeowners can make that will save money and make their houses more sustainable?

What we always tell people is before you even think of installing renewable energy, consider conservation and efficiency. There are some simple steps that will save you money and are good for the environment. And if you do decide to install a renewable energy system, you will be able to install a smaller one.
