NORTHBROOK The Northbrook Village Board on Tuesday lifted the temporary tree removal ban at 8 Hickory Lane, despite the continued appeal of neighbors to save trees on the wooded site from being cut down.

The village had issued the ban after neighbors asked the public works committee to review the staffs decision to issue a permit allowing 53 trees to be destroyed.

The committee Village Trustees Todd Heller, A.C. Buehler and Robert Israel met Dec. 13 during an emergency session, deciding that the staff had acted appropriately based on the ordinance governing the issue.

The committee then sent its recommendation to the board, which voted unanimously that the staff followed village code in issuing Michael and Debbie Rude, the new owners of the wooded one-acre site, a permit for tree removal.

However, Trustee James Karagianis, acting as president pro tem in the absence of Village President Sandra Frum, noted that the tree preservation ordinance should probably be examined in the near future.

It probably is not the best it could be, he added.

Michael Rugh sees plenty of misinformation and misunderstanding when it comes the topic of home fire sprinklers.

And he hopes that a new push for education could be what is needed to get the state to finally pass legislation requiring sprinklers in new homes.

Rugh, the assistant fire chief for Union Fire Company in Carlisle and the fire marshal for the state police, announced Wednesday that the Carlisle Volunteer Firefighters received a $1,000 stipend to educate the public on home sprinkler systems via public service announcements.

Those PSAs will run in various media outlets, as well as one specifically targeted area movie theaters.

The national nonprofit Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition is funding these stipends to firefighting organizations across the country and one big reason why its doing it is to dispel myths perpetrated in Hollywood movies about sprinklers.

According to Rugh, unlike what viewers see on television and in movies, a fire in one room will not trigger the sprinkler system in every part of the house or business and only the high temperature of a fire not cigar smoke or burnt toast will set off the system.

All theyre doing is starting to educate the public, Rugh said of PSAs.

Some of the advertisements include a 30-second comical spoof showing a burglar attempting to set off the sprinkler system from another room during a dance party, and succeeding in setting off only the sprinkler above him.

For Rugh, a telling PSA compares the effects of a fire at a home without a sprinkler system and a home with a sprinkler system. The former has a charred room and the other only had fire damage to the curtains before the sprinkler system doused the fire.

ANYONE who is keen to get to grips with the world of computers and internet technology is invited to find out more at a special session at Malton library.

An ITea and Biscuits drop-in day on Thursday, January 17, will give people the chance to discover the range of computer taster courses on offer. The event runs from 10am-2pm when staff will be on hand to help everyone decide which course is the most suitable.

The drop-in day aims to ensure that everyone, old or young, can discover the everyday benefits of being online and using different technologies.

County Coun Chris Metcalfe, executive member for library and information services, said: ITea and Biscuits is a friendly introduction to computers and provides information about ways in which computer novices can learn new skills.

It ensures that people have access to services and interests which allow them to take the initiative in living their lives the way in which they want.

Age is no obstacle to using computers as we have found out time and time again in running taster sessions and courses in the libraries. He added: If you have never used a computer but have often wondered what it would be like, this is an ideal opportunity to try it, along with people in a similar situation and with help from library staff.

Tea and biscuits and a chat make this a relaxed and friendly occasion with no pressure and lots of support.

- Have a radiant barrier installed in the rafters or joists of the attic. This will reflect the radiant heat that strikes it.

- Incandescent fixtures should be upgraded to compact bulbs.

- Seal all other holes between the heated space and the attic.
