Suspect turns himself in after police contact

YORK, Maine York police have charged a South Portland man with theft by deception for allegedly running an appliance repair scam.

George D. Healey, 65, 68 B St., South Portland, operated under the names Ateck Appliance, AH Appliance, George Healey Plumber and D&G Appliance, according to York police.

He allegedly went to people's homes to give estimates for servicing their broken appliances, according to detective Sgt. Thomas Cryan. Based on the estimate, the victim would pay Healey up front for the parts and labor, Cryan said. Healey would leave the home, cash the check and never return to finish the job, he said.

York police did not report how many residents had been taken in by the scam.

Detective Matt Calcina found numerous complaints in York and neighboring communities, Cryan said.

Calcina contacted Ogunquit and Wells police departments to advise them of victims in their towns. Healey has also been charged with theft by deception in Ogunquit and Wells, according to Cryan.

Healey came to the police department voluntarily after being contacted by police.

He was charged with three counts of theft by deception, a Class C felony based on two previous convictions, Cryan said.

He is scheduled to appear Thursday, May 1, in York County Superior Court in Alfred on the charges.

A South Portland man faces felony theft charges after York police say he engaged in a scam where he would offer to fix peoples appliances at their home, take money for parts, then never complete the work.

Police on Thursday charged George D. Healy, 65, of 68 B St. with three counts of theft by deception. The charges were felonies because of two prior convictions, police said.

Healy would give a repair estimate to a potential victim, who would pay Healy up front for parts and labor, police said. He would then deposit the check and never return to do the work, police said.

Detectives found numerous complaints in York and neighboring communities, police said.

Wells and Ogunquit police also charged Healy with theft by deception, police said.

Healy has an initial court appearance scheduled in York County Superior Court on May 1.

Spring in Acadiana means much for local residents - warmer weather, gardening and the beginning of festival season. On the down side, it is also signals the emergence of one of the most destructive insects in Acadiana - termites.

A colony of the bugs can inflict serious structural damage on a home in a fairly short period of time.

Each year, termites cause about $5 billion in property damage across the U.S., according to the National Pest Management Association, a BBB National Partner.

Termites are known as "silent destroyers" because of their ability to chew undetected through wood, flooring and even wallpaper. As the ground warms, termite populations emerge in search of mates and new structures to invade.

Better Business Bureau offers these tips from NPMA for preventing termites from wreaking havoc on your home. Here are four ways to avoid a termite infestation:

Repair and replace when necessary. Repair leaking faucets, water pipes and AC units on the outside of the home. Repair fascia, soffits and rotted roof shingles. Replace weather stripping and repair loose mortar around basement foundation and windows.

Keep it clear. Store firewood at least 20 feet away from the house and five inches off the ground. Direct water away from your house through properly functioning downspouts, gutters and splash blocks. Keep mulch at least 15 inches from the foundation.

Routinely inspect the foundation of your home for signs of mud tubes (used by termites to reach a food source), cracked or bubbling paint and wood that sounds hollow when tapped. Monitor all exterior areas of wood, including windows, doorframes and skirting boards for any noticeable changes.

Protect your investment. Not sure if you have termites? Consider a termite inspection from a qualified pest management company. NPMA recommends a termite inspection every 1-3 years, but half of homeowners they surveyed have never had their homes inspected.
