Scene Maker: Boca interior designer gears up for Boating & Beach Bash - March 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Between being a busy wife and mom, running an interior design business and singing in her synagogues choir, Sandra Gottfried doesnt have a lot of time to spare.

The Boca Raton woman, who moved to Florida from Colombia in the late 1990s, runs Space Adaptability, an interior design firm that helps people plan or adapt space to make homes or businesses more accessible. She is also vice chairwoman of the City of Boca Raton Advisory Board for People with Disabilities.

Recently, she persuaded the county to make Sugar Sand Parks playground, near Palmetto Park Road and Military Trail, universal in design.

But lately, her focus is on the sixth annual Boating & Beach Bash for People with Disabilities at Spanish River Park. The event, this Saturday, allows those who dont get out much to enjoy a barbecue, boat rides, live entertainment, therapy ponies and exhibits. And its all free although donations are needed for the Bash, organized and run by volunteers and financed through private donations and sponsorship.

Gottfried, 40, designs the layout for the Bash and produces a handout map for attendees.

Working on the Bash, she said, is hard work. It is very intense making 6,000 people (the expected attendance) happy.

    Favorite place to sing:

Any place is a good place to sing. If Im not singing, Im whistling. When you sing, you have music in you. My favorite place to sing with a choir is Bnai Torah in Boca. I sing there every Saturday.

Security camera warns residents of fire - March 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

HESPERIA The San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to yet another fire that may be linked to zero-clearance fireplace, but a home security camera helped the residents of the home escape unharmed.

County Fire received a report of a house fire at the 8000 block of Kingston Avenue Hesperia on Friday just before 6 a.m., according to a County Fire news release.

The first engine arrived in six minutes and found light smoke coming from the right side of the house attic. Crews also noticed light smoke coming from the fireplace area.

Crews went to work removing the wall and ceiling drywall from the fireplace, master bedroom and bathroom areas. They found smoke and a smoldering fire in the attic insulation and near the zero-clearance fireplace.

Other units arrived and assisted with the extensive job of removing the burnt insulation and checking if the fire may have spread to the rest of the home.

The occupants of the home told investigators they were viewing their security camera video and noticed the fire outside of the home. They exited the home and used a garden hose to douse the attic area until firefighters arrived.

The blaze caused an estimated $40,000 worth of damage to the home, according to the release. No injuries were reported.

County Fire Capt. Al Franco said the fire started near the fireplace, but the exact cause of the fire is unknown and still under investigation.

Eighteen firefighters responded with five engines, three ambulances, one battalion chief and one fire investigator.

Zero-clearance fireplaces are metal shafts surrounded by wood and other combustible materials. Unlike traditional brick fireplaces, they are not intended to accommodate large fires.

Church services remember those lost in NYC blast - March 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    NEW YORK CITY (AP) -

A church hit by the loss of two members in an explosion that destroyed two New York City apartment buildings remembered the women in services Sunday with tears mixing in with the sounds of gospel, as members of a church that was demolished in the collapse joined another nearby house of worship for its service.

At the site of the blast, the last of the debris was being cleared away as investigators prepared to get started on finding the cause.

Bethel Gospel Assembly lost members Griselde Camacho and Carmen Tanco in the blast that also killed six others in the East Harlem neighborhood.

"We feel the void. Both women were very active members," said Michelle Robinson, the church's business administrator, adding that Tanco often served as an usher at services and would greet her fellow congregants at the door.

"We are a family and we're all just missing the big hugs she used to give," Robinson said.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio was scheduled to speak at the church, and then visit the house of worship where members of the Spanish Christian Church were spending Sunday. The Spanish Christian Church was located in one of the two collapsed buildings. On Saturday a crew at the blast site found a large Bible in the rubble and returned it to the church's pastor.

At the scene of the explosion on Park Avenue and 116th Street, there were signs that the initial cleanup was coming to an end. Police barricades that had kept people away since Wednesday's blast were moved closer into the site, and pedestrians who had been kept far away were now allowed to walk closer.

The theory that Wednesday's explosion was due to a gas leak gained momentum Friday after the National Transportation Safety Board, which investigates pipeline accidents, said underground tests conducted in the hours after the explosion registered high concentrations of natural gas. The NTSB will conduct its own inquiry after police and fire officials determine what might have caused the explosion.

City Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano said Saturday that investigators should be able to get to the gas pipes and meters in the front of the buildings' basements Sunday, adding, "We'll be in full swing with the investigation."

Garden with a Japanese touch - March 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

As part of its motley collection of theme based green spaces in the city, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has completed work on the Japanese Garden at Jubilee Hills close to Annapurna Studios road.

The civic body which already has 15 theme based parks such as Palm Garden at Malakpet, Bamboo Garden and Bougainvillea Garden in Jubilee Hills, has set up the new lung space spread over 3,500 square yards at a cost of nearly Rs.80 lakh. The urban biodiversity wing which recently completed the work has dotted the entire facility with motifs representative of gardens in Japan and gave it a look that is different from the other city gardens.

Green spaces have been created with foliage from more than 100 different species and it gets interspersed with water plants and stone benches. The last phase of work on all round pathways laid with granite stone has been done but for a final coat of paint and setting up the board, which is also getting ready in Japanese font, all the details have been attended to, according to the staff.

It has been pointed out that the gardens in Japan usually are not elaborate but laid out in informal and trimmed fashion and the same had been replicated here. There are gazebos, 12 solar lamps, stone lanterns and a small design to be set up in typical Japanese style with chips, would be done by the time the facility gets inaugurated. A small water body and a smaller stone arched bridge add aestheticism to the garden.

The GHMC in its drive at creating green spaces in different parts of the city has a total of 49 major gardens apart from more than 520 parks at colony level. In view of the election code, the Japanese Garden would be inaugurated after the polls.
