Duke To Install Home Upgrades in Lake Wales - March 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published: Friday, March 14, 2014 at 10:23 p.m. Last Modified: Friday, March 14, 2014 at 10:23 p.m.

LAKE WALES | Starting next week, more than 1,700 Lake Wales households will get free energy-saving upgrades.

On Tuesday, the James P. Austin Community Center at 315 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in Lake Wales, will host the kickoff for Duke Energy's Neighborhood Energy Saver program.

The program, established in 2006, includes the free installation of up to 16 energy-saving improvements for the homes and apartments of qualified customers.

"Duke Energy approached us about this program, and we were very interested," said Kenneth Fields, city manager for Lake Wales. "It doesn't cost the city anything beyond providing a meeting space, and it helps our citizens."

The program benefits income-eligible customers living in select, census-defined communities.

"Duke Energy is deeply committed to the success of the communities we serve," said Jerry Miller, the company's community relations manager in Lake Wales, in a press release. "We're helping customers who need it the most take control of their energy costs by bringing this program right to their doorsteps."

Kristin Perry, a Duke Energy spokeswoman, said customers who were eligible for the program were notified weeks ago.

The community center kickoff on Tuesday, which will take place between 7 and 8:30 p.m., also will feature energy-saving tips from Duke Energy personnel for those eligible customers.

St. Petersburg-based Duke Energy has partnered with the city of Lake Wales, the Department of Economic Opportunity's Weatherization Assistance program, the Lake Wales Housing Authority, the Lake Wales Care Center, the Green and Gold Foundation, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development division on the program.

Home buying 101: Declutter your house before selling - March 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Properly prepping your house to put on the real estate market is a vital step in increasing your chances of getting a good offer on your home. However, there is a fine line between making your home feel comfortable while also de-personalizing it enough so that a potential buyer can visualize themselves living in your home.

You want to show your house in the best light possible, literally. To create depth and make your home look as large as possible to potential buyers, start by making sure your home is well-lit in all rooms. Make sure your curtains are open and all the light bulbs in your lighting fixtures are working.

Along with having good lighting, you have to declutter your home. This cant be emphasized enough. Even if you feel youve put enough things away or have taken many of your possessions to an off-site storage facility, you may have to do more. Your real estate agent should be able to objectively tell you if youve decluttered to the degree necessary to enhance the positive aspects of your home.

Be ruthless about cleaning your home when youre getting ready to put it on the real estate market. Remove any unpleasant odors before a showing. HOWEVER, make sure you dont leave behind a strong chemical smell, like bleach. It may lead a potential buyer to think you are actually trying to cover up a major problem. Do whatever is necessary to remove the cause of the odor dont just mask it.

Some other key things to do when cleaning and decluttering your home include the following:

Take pictures of yourself and your children, including their names, off walls and other places. Remove any large family portraits and replace them with mirrors, if possible. Mirrors also help create more depth in your home.

Put all valuables away or remove completely from your property if possible, including items that have a valuable autograph on them.

Remove prescription drugs from your medicine cabinets or anywhere else you have them stored. Completely remove from your property if possible.

Put toys and gaming systems away.

Remove pets from the property if you are having an open house and when your real estate agent has scheduled showings.

CL&P Says (Mostly) No to Tree-Trimming Halt - March 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Friday, March 14, 2014 CL&P Says (Mostly) No to Tree-Trimming Halt

    By Jan Ellen Spiegel

Connecticut Light and Power will not be curtailing most of its more radical tree trimming temporarily as requested earlier this week by the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA).

PURA had requested CL&P and United Illuminating suspend their programs known as enhanced tree trimming and enhanced tree removal while it reconsiders tree-trimming policies for both companies.

Despite an initial statement from CL&P that said it will of course comply with their request to voluntarily curtail our enhanced tree trimming program, the company sent a letter to PURA Thursday asking to continue with any enhanced trimming that has already been agreed to.

The letter stated that there are 65 local tree crews including 170 employees working on the program. If all ETT work is suspended or if the suspension continues indefinitely, there is a risk that tree trimming contractors will shift resources out of state, adversely impacting the Companys ability to respond to a major weather event, the letter said. Additionally, suspending all such work until a final decision is rendered will have significant cost and schedule impacts on the ETT program.

Late today PURA agreed to CL&Ps request.

Tile seller gets $17,000 - March 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Tauranga tile seller has been awarded more than $17,000 for being unfairly dismissed.

Tile Trends, a tiling company based across the North Island, has been ordered to fork out more than $10,000 for humiliation and $7280 for lost wages to former tile-saleswoman Jan Mazzola.

Ms Mazzola was fired from Tile Trends' Tauranga store after the company alleged complaints had been made about her, including that she had been handing a disproportional amount of tiling work to her boyfriend Kevin Langford.

In a decision released on Saturday, the Employment Relations Authority (ERA) ruled Tile Trends had dismissed Ms Mazzola unfairly and conducted a poor investigation into complaints.

"Ms Mazzola was a long standing employee of some nine years and had never received any warnings," the ERA's judgment said.

The ERA noted there had been an incident in 2012 at a work function, resulting in a complaint by the Tauranga branch manager Cherie Sullivan.

"The incident and the complaint soured the relationship between Ms Mazzola and Ms Sullivan," the ERA said.

In July 2013, Tile Trends told Ms Mazzola that complaints had been made by staff and customers, but refused to hand over detailed information about those complaints.

The ERA ruled the company should have provided all available information about complaints when requested.

It said the company had not acted as a fair and responsible employer would, failed to comply with statutory obligations and conducted a poor investigation into Ms Mazzola's behaviour.
