Berlin High renovations continue progress - March 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

By JOHNNY J. BURNHAM STAFF WRITER

BERLIN The transformation of Berlin High School continues.

Public Works Director Art Simonian says several ongoing projects will be completed this summer. Those include a new kitchen and cafeteria and the new home of the English, art, business and special education departments.

The amphitheater will be transformed into a TV studio. What was once the boys locker room will be converted to social studies, health and early childhood training classrooms. The former UpBeat room will be made into the schools heating and air conditioning room.

Completion of all those projects is anticipated in July, in plenty of time for the next school year.

Roofing replacement will ramp up as the weather permits, Simonian said. It has been somewhat slowed due to the cold weather.

The towns furniture, fixture and equipment proposal with an expected price tag of $4.1 million will be sent for state approval next week, he said.

The whole high school renovation project will cost more than $84 million. That includes construction of a new six-classroom technology building and complete renovation of the existing school. A $69.95 million budget was approved in 2011.

The town was able to make up the difference as, thanks largely to state Rep. Joe Aresimowicz, D-Berlin, it secured the necessary funds from the state last summer. The project could have been halted if the money had not been available.

Wife of man who died in mudslide hopes others find closure soon - March 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    ARLINGTON, Wash.

People with the Snohomish County Sheriffs Office visited Barbara Welsh Thursday, telling her what she had known deep down for almost a week: her husband was dead.

66-year-old Bill Welsh left their Arlington house Saturday morning to help install a water heater at Amanda Lennicks house on Steelhead Drive.

He was working with Stephen Neal. Another man, Steven Hadaway, was installing a satellite dish at the house.

Welsh and Neal have been found, but Lennick and Hadaway are still missing.

Welsh, an electrician, was married to his wife, Barbara, for 43 years.

At least I know hes in heaven with his parents, you know. They were probably shocked to see him come before others. I love him so dearly, Barbara Welsh said.

Governor Inslee even consoled Welsh in the first couple of days. But Welsh waited a total of five days before the final word.

Welsh said Bill was always attentive and considerate, making sure she got everything she wanted.

Bill always said that there was a reason that he survived Vietnam, she said. He got to meet Barbara.

Sheds and barns are targeted during month-long crime spree.

POLICE in North Devon are warning people to secure outbuildings following a rash of rural break-ins this month.

So far this month, 23 burglaries have been reported in areas including Atherington, Bishops Tawton, Goodleigh, Chivenor and North Molton.

Items stolen from sheds and barns include generators; strimmers; hedge cutters; quad bikes; ride-on lawnmowers; power tools; bicycles; and various hand tools.

PCSO Hannah Denton urged people to report any suspicious vehicles, particularly vans, and advised people to consider taking further security precautions.

Please contact police with as much details as possible and remember that suspicious activity does not just occur during the night, she said.

Even though home and business owners have placed secure padlocks, offenders have cut through them to gain entry to the buildings and have their pick of property from inside.
