The colorful Denville String Band performs in holiday parades around the area.
The Denville String Band, North Jerseys only Mummers-style marching band, is beginning its 63rd year of entertaining people in parades and concerts. The band plays and marches in the style of the Philadelphia Mummers bands with elaborate costumes and traditional popular music from the 1920s through the 1950s with a sprinkling of newer songs. It also performs concerts at indoor venues and summer-time gazebos all over North Jersey.
"Our next public performance will be at the Morristown St. Patricks Day parade on March 15," said Band President Bernie Dennison. "It is an honor to participate in this parade which is said to be one of the largest if not the largest St. Patricks Day parade in New Jersey."
Parade day will start with Mass at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 91 Maple Ave. in Morristown. The parade will begin at noon near the corner of South Street and James Street and proceed up South Street around the Morristown Green and Ends at Atno Avenue.
Pre-parade festivities will start at the Green at 10:30 a.m. with Derek Warfield and the Young Wolfe Tones, "The National Anthem," Irish step dancing and chalking of the Shamrocks by the Special Olympics.
According to Dennison, the Denville String Band has a full slate of concerts and parades scheduled for 2014 including many around Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving.
The band is very popular, we have more requests by concert and parade organizers then we can possibly handle," he said. "Unfortunately, we have to turn down many requests."
The band is actively seeking new members. According to Membership Chairman Andrew Bulfer, the band is particularly looking for new saxophone, clarinet, banjo, guitar, accordion and drummers. Other woodwind and string instrument players are also invited. There are non-musical positions available too, so other family members can participate.
According to Bulfer, marching with the band down the street in full colorful Mummers costumes with crowds cheering at the curb is a particular thrill for their members.

SALT LAKE CITY Ruth has big holes in the vinyl fencing along her property line. But, for now, she says it's not worth fixing.
"We have apparently some teenagers who like to run into the fence and break 'em. They've been back three or four times and just like to bash into the fence. I can hear them when they come. It just seems like they like to run and cause some damage," she said Tuesday. She asked that her last name not be used.
Since November, Salt Lake police have received 10 reports of vinyl fences being damaged. All of the incidents have been on the east side.
Investigators don't know if the same person or group has been involved in each incident. But detective Greg Wilking said the belief is that juveniles are throwing their bodies into the fences and crashing through them.
"What it looks like is people just running into the fence purely to cause property damage," he said. "No tire tracks, physically nothing left behind. It pretty much has to be somebody using their body to knock down the fence."
The incidents tapered off during the winter months.
"They didn't want to be inconvenienced by slipping on any ice when bashing in my fence," quipped Ruth.
But as spring and summer approach, police are warning residents to be on the lookout for a possible increase in such vandalism.
Ruth, who lives off Foothill Boulevard near 1300 South, said vandals have damaged her fence mostly around 11:30 p.m. She replaced a vinyl panel the first time it was damaged. But after several panels were destroyed the second time, she decided to wait until someone is arrested before repairing it, or until those responsible realize "it's not that fun to come and ruin someone else's property."
"It's mostly the worry of, first of all, why do kids have to damage people's property to have fun? And what else might they do? And where do their parents think they are at 11:30 at night? If it were my child doing it, I would be very unhappy. I'm sure that these parents have no idea what their kids are doing," she said.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - University of South Carolina junior Alexa Anthony has been named Rider of the Month by the National Collegiate Equestrian Association, it was announced today. Anthony, one of four national riders of the month, picked up the honor in equitation over fences. This is her first NCEA Rider of the Month award, and it comes two weeks after she was named SEC Rider of the Month in equitation over fences.
Anthony posted a 3-0 jumping record for the Gamecocks last month while posting the highest score in all three of her rides, along with earning MVP honors in each meet.
In South Carolina's 12-8 win at New Mexico State on Feb. 1, Anthony defeated her Aggie opponent, 87-83, while earning MVP honors. One week later in the Gamecocks' 10-9 win over Georgia, Anthony again won MVP honors, knocking off her Bulldog opponent, 87-86. She closed out the month at home against Texas A&M, completing her perfect month with an 88-78 win while winning her third straight MVP.
Two weeks ago, Anthony was named SEC Rider of the Month in equitation over fences, her first ever conference rider of the month award. This year, Anthony is 12-6-5 overall with five MVPs. She has not lost a point in her last eight rides, the longest active undefeated streak on the team.
The Gamecocks are off this week for spring break, but Carolina will begin preparations on next week for the 2014 SEC Equestrian Championship, which will be hosted at One Wood Farm in Blythewood. The 2014 SEC Championship is open to the public and admission is free all weekend. The Gamecocks (11-2 overall, 4-2 SEC) will open the championship on Fri., March 28 when No. 1 seed Carolina faces off against No. 4 seed Texas A&M. The winner of that meet will advance to Saturday's championship competition and will face the winner of the Georgia/Auburn meet. Friday's action will begin at 10 a.m. ET, while on Saturday, the consolation round will get underway at 9 a.m. ET, followed by the championship meet at 2 p.m. ET.

Japan's Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs Akitaka Saiki (R) shakes hands with his South Korean counterpart Cho Tae-yong before their meeting at the Foreign Ministry in Seoul on March 12, 2014.
Senior South Korean and Japanese officials have renewed efforts to mend Seoul-Tokyo ties in an attempt to reduce tensionsacross the troubled Asia-Pacific region.
Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Akitaka Saiki held talks with his South Korean counterpart Cho Tae-yong in Seoul on Wednesday.
Japanese sources say Saiki was to use the meeting to propose a trilateral summit between leaders of Japan, South Korea and the US later this month.
However, there has been no official response by Seoul to the reported offer.
The neighbors have not held high-level talks since December, when Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visited a Tokyo shrine that honors several war criminals.
Abe became the first Japanese premier in seven years to pay his respects at Yasukuni Shrine, where Japanese veterans are buried. Some Japanese officials convicted of committing war crimes during World War II are also buried at the site.
Reacting to the controversial visit, South Korean President Park Geun-hye has recently refused to meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo. Seouls parliament has also passed a resolution denouncing Japanese prime minister's visit to a controversial war shrine.
South Korea and China have criticized the move, calling it a symbol of Tokyos militarism and aggression.
Senior Chinese officials also say Japanese prime ministers visit to Yasukuni war shrine was "by no means a domestic affair of Japan" and reflects the attitude of his government toward the countrys colonial rule in the past.
