It's not easy being green - not in Wollongong's Crown Street Mall, with vandals, gum tree objectors, ugly fences and now bugs to contend with.
A group of spotted gum saplings planted as part of the mall refurbishment is being treated for an infestation of bugs that has turned their leaves a mottled white, as if flaked in sea salt.
It is the latest difficulty for the spotted gums, which sparked heated online debate when they were first planted, for their tendency to drop branches.
They were later targeted by vandals and wrapped in temporary metal fencing to protect them.

The bug infestation was discovered this year and treatment, involving an additive to the trees' daily water supply, began two months ago.
Wollongong City Council has identified the culprits as mealybugs, which secrete a powdery wax layer to protect themselves while they feed off a plant.
The council says the bugs have been killed and the trees are in the midst of a full recovery.

Solid Apollo LED Lighting has just released a new line of 11 unique aluminum LED lighting profiles. With a large variety of profiles to suit almost every LED project. Do-it-yourselfers, architects, lighting designers, and contractors now have even more options in creating the perfect LED Lighting installation.
This is the second generation of LED aluminum channels created by Solid Apollo and their experience and knowledge from the first generation has gone into making this new generation the best yet.
One of the largest issues lighting designers, contractors and architects face when developing linear lighting solutions, is to create clean, bright and functional systems. This requires the light to appear smooth and continuous.
Previously, there were only three basic solutions to create this effect: LED Light Strips, Neon lights and LED linear fixtures. These solutions unfortunately were difficult for creating a continuous path of light, as shadows and light gaps were easily created. These solutions also involved clumsy and bulky installations due to the amount of cabling required.
Another issue with linear LED lighting has been the difficulty to position the lights precisely to avoid glare and discomfort from improper installation.
According to Manuel Barquin, CEO of SolidApollo, The idea is very simple, we have created high grade linear aluminum profiles in numerous shapes to meet the demands of almost every installation. Each profile is easy to use, simply place the LED strip in the profile, and use the optional diffusers to create a continuous linear path of light. There are really no limitations to the length or levels of brightness desired.
There are several competitive advantages by using Solid Apollos LED lighting profiles. Depending on the profile chosen, LED strips from 12mm to 30mm wide can be used to achieve the exact color and brightness required. The profiles can also be customized to fit almost any length.
There are several exciting new designs now available. The first is the large variety of recessed profile options, such as the T12 Recessed, T20 Recessed, and the Floor profile. Not only can all of these profiles be installed in wood floors, walls, ceilings, drywall and cabinets, but the new floor model can also take the weight of people and vehicles on it. This is possible by the high grade PVC diffuser designed by Solid Apollo.
Another new and improved design is the Corner profile, which has been constructed to easily fit in any 90 degree corner. The low profile and professional finish is perfect for installations requiring a discrete light source, such as display cases for jewelry or retail applications.

SINGAPORE: The push to raise productivity in Singapores construction sector is taking on a new focus this year.
New rules will soon take effect, pushing for greater use of productive technologies such as prefabricated components.
From the second half of 2014, developers will be required to use prefabricated bathroom units (PBUs) for all residential projects on government land sales sites.
The Singapore Contractors Association said this is a significant step in getting upstream players like developers onboard productivity initiatives.
PBUs are like huge Lego blocks that are hoisted up by a crane and then stacked, one on top of another.
On average, prefab components already make up one third of each construction project by City Developments (CDL) which has been using prefab construction methods for over a decade.
That is the highest level of prefab adoption among private developers in Singapore, compared to about 50 per cent for public housing projects.
CDL said that with the new rules, more projects could have a prefab component in them in the near future.
Another developer, Frasers Centrepoint, said it has been using a mix of productive technologies in all their developments since 2007.
Cheang Kok Kheong, chief executive officer of Frasers Centrepoint Homes, said: "These include prefabricated railings, precast refuse chutes and dry construction options such as the use of drywall for some of the internal walls.

There are a number of significant benefits to paving a driveway, including better parking, greater curb appeal and the ability to keep the exterior of the home in tip top shape. Paving an asphalt driveway is well within the skill set of most homeowners, but it is important to do plenty of research and determine what is needed to complete the job.
Perhaps the most important part of paving an asphalt driveway takes place before the first asphalt is poured. It is important to lay down a good gravel base in order to have a well functioning driveway. A gravel base between 2 and 8 inches thick is sufficient for most jobs. A base that is either too thin or too thick will produce an inferior driveway, so pay careful attention to the base.
Asphalt itself is a mixture of aggregate, and it contains stones, sand and liquid asphalt cement. This cement is a petroleum product that is heated to the point where it becomes a liquid. This liquid cement and aggregate mixture is poured over the top of the gravel base to create the driveway.
Asphalt will produce a thick, black driveway which absorbs heat in the winter, helping to melt any new snow or ice that falls on the surface. This type of driveway is also quite durable, suffering from a minimal amount of crack damage. Even so, asphalt driveways may not be as durable in colder climates where the ground freezes below the surface.
In order to help alleviate some of the weather damage experienced by asphalt driveway owners, paving companies and construction firms have experimented with the water composition of asphalt in order to achieve more cold resistant varieties. This more weather resistant asphalt driveway is sometimes called a chip seal, and it is made with asphalt in which 30 percent of the liquid cement in regular asphalt has been replaced with water. When the asphalt is laid down, the heat of the asphalt causes the water within the mixture to evaporate, resulting in a more weather resistant finish.
After the water has evaporated from the asphalt driveway, a layer of crushed gravel is then sprayed on top of the asphalt. A special spreader is used to scatter the small pieces of gravel over the newly poured asphalt, and a drum roller is then used to pack down the sprayed-on gravel.
Since the asphalt is still warm, it will hold onto the sprayed pieces of gravel, adding texture to the finished driveway. This is known in the industry as a "chip seal" driveway, and it is becoming increasingly popular.
