Borough Council approved a variance for a porch to be constructed at a home on Lancaster Avenue

Mt. Gretna >> Members of Borough Council on Monday night approved a variance request for 417 Lancaster Ave. that calls for a porch to encroach into a setback.
The request was made by Dev Idgunji, who plans to build a house at that location. The encroachment into the setback will be 4.62 feet on the east side of the home and 2.34 feet on the west side.
Approval of the request is contingent upon similar approval by the Chautauqua board.
In unrelated business, a discussion was held about parking problems, specifically those caused by renters and their guests who arrive with multiple cars, leaving residents without enough parking spaces.
Keith Kilgore, solicitor, noted the streets are public and, if people are parked legally, there isn't anything that can be done. He said the Chautauqua board is looking into possible options that are in place in other communities where there are multiple vacation rentals.
In other business:
Kilgore and Bill Care, public works director brought some concerns raised by borough residents to council. The issue involved whether there are residents who are undertaking renovation projects without obtaining proper permits.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- It took a devastating fire at a two-story home in Arlington for a family of five and many neighbors to realize there are no fire hydrants on their block.
The closest fire hydrant to the home on the 8500 block of Andaloma Street is nearly 2,000 feet away. That fact forced Jacksonville firefighters to line up tanker after tanker to be able to put out the flames.
Neighbor Heather McCoy described the chaotic scene Sunday afternoon.
"It was really busy. There were a lot of people, it was very scary," said McCoy.
The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department said it knows which neighborhoods lack sufficient hydrants, which is why it dispatched so many tankers. City Councilman Clay Yarborough, who represents the Arlingwood neighborhood, said while JFRD responded quickly fire hydrants are still needed.
"There still is a need, I believe, to have more fire hydrants in these areas that don't have them. The neighborhood was built to the standard at that time but it's costing the city, JEA and the Fire Department the work to go through, the time that needed to be invested, to go through to make sure we had sufficient coverage," said Yarborough.
According to JEA spokeswoman Gerri Boyce, the neighborhood was built in 1956 but current city code requires contractors put in fire hydrants every 500-700 feet.
Action News first told you in October about hundreds of fire hydrants deemed deficient by JEA. Since then, the number has dropped to 91.
"Right now in the system we have one hydrant, and what we did is bagged it so that JFRD knows that the hydrant is not working," said Boyce.
Some Jacksonville neighborhoods don't have fire hydrants at all.

This winter has challenged my clients in many ways. Those who are building new homes or working on additions have had to endure weather delays. We've had delays in shipments getting to our warehouse, and had to delay getting products to our clients.
On the positive side, a number of you have been evaluating your rooms and have decided it may be time for an update. A new look is always good for the soul after a winter like we've endured.
The before photo shows an addition that was completed last year. The home that is located in a lovely wooded area that would also undergo a large amount of landscaping to complete the project. This spring/summer will be the first season for the couple to fully enjoy their new space, inside and out.
When the construction was done, except for the trim around the windows, I was called in to discuss the dcor. The first question I asked was how the space would be used. Other than keeping an area on the floor available for the grandchildren's train set and other toys, the rest of the room would be a blank canvas for me to provide adult comfort.
The room would be used daily by the couple and appreciated for family gatherings when children and grandchildren visited.
Placing furniture in the long, but not wide space had to be carefully planned to maximize the function and seating capability.
