Vista-area construction workers face charges after sting operation - March 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Sixteen Vista-area construction workers face possible criminal charges after getting caught up this week in an undercover sting operation targeting unlicensed contractors, authorities announced Friday.

The crackdown took place Tuesday through Thursday across California and resulted in a total of 121 arrests, according to the Contractors State License Board, which headed the annual enforcement effort.

Investigators nabbed suspects, whose names were not released, in nine counties by posing as homeowners seeking bids for such services as decking, fencing, painting, masonry, cabinetry, flooring, landscaping, concrete work, tree-removal and drywall installation, according to CSLB public affairs.

A number of those targeted during the operation had been subjects of consumer complaints. Most face possible misdemeanor charges carrying punishments of up to six months in jail and fines as high as $5,000.

A majority of those caught in the operation, dubbed "California Blitz," were identified through illegal ads posted online on Craigslist, CSLB officials said.

Glass tile DIY: Yes, you can install your own backsplash (with video) - March 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Step 1: Home Depot instructor Charles Murphy shows how to to apply SimpleMat, an adhesive backing for glass tile that is less messy than Mastic and faster since the adhesive backing doesnt have to set up overnight.

Step 2: After unwrapping the tile square, use scissors or a utility knife to cut the tile to size, making sure to cut the back webbing as close as possible to the tile.

Step 3: Peel the film off the front of the SimpleMat where the tile will be placed. Curl the tile forward, as shown, so that only the bottom row dangles loosely.

Step 4: Melody Goodwin applies the first tile square on a practice board, starting at what would be the bottom of the backsplash. Place the loose bottom row into position, then unroll the square upward, pressing into place as you go.

Step 5: When the tile is in position, use a grout float to press it firmly to the adhesive SimpleMat.

Stripes touch-up set for Highway 550 at I-25 - March 29, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    ........................................................................................................................................................................................

BLINDED BY THE MEDIAN BRUSH ON ALAMEDA: Epi Gurule called to say its tough trying to get out of his driveway on Alameda, between Guadalupe Trails north and south, because the median is so overgrown and blocks sightlines.

Its quite dangerous and been that way for quite awhile, he said.

David Mitchell, the head of Bernalillo Countys Operations and Maintenance Department, says new medians are coming after the Paseo del Norte rebuild is completed. But until then, the county is planning some spring cleaning, dropping only non-peak traffic lanes.

In fact, crews found three plants in the formal sight triangle at this intersection, with branches encroaching into the triangle. Our road supervisor went a little further and made nice popsicle trees out of a number of them in that area until after PDN is over and Parks can go in and extend the tidier and mostly treeless landscaping started near Fourth and extend it west.

That work will be done on a legislative grant that will require traffic control and lane drops on Alameda to build, which are not allowed at present during PDN construction.

Also in the meantime, the countys Parks Department has sprayed pre-emergents where possible to keep weeds from coming up this spring, but normal inmate and other intensive cleaning labor also need lane drops and barricading for worker safety. Either way, beautification of the median will mostly wait for PDN.

These photos show the before and after views in reference to median landscaping trimming on Alameda near Guadalupe Trail. (Courtesy of Bernalillo County)

TROUBLE SEEING THE NEW US 550/I-25: Judith Turner emails that heading either north or south onto Interstate 25 from the new highway 550 project in Bernalillo, the white lines are very difficult to see, both during the day and at night. Do you know if this problem will be remedied soon before there is a tragic accident?

    Yes.
