It used to be that outfitting your home with a security system meant contacting a security agency like Brinks or ADT, installing sensors all over your house, and paying a monthly fee to keep your service going. But now that sensor tech has become drastically cheaper than it used to be, cheap DIY home surveillance systems are starting to pop up, and Piper is one of the first to hit the market.
Just a few short months ago, Piper was nothing more than ahopeful IndieGoGo project, but Blacksumac has been charging forward at blistering pace since then, and a couple months ago started shipping to consumers. We got our hands on one and played with it for a few weeks to determine if its really a viable alternative to traditional home security systems. Heres what we thought:

One of Pipers biggest selling points is ease of use. Unlike traditional security/surveillance systems, Blacksumac promises that this little box promises doesnt require any sort of complicated installation process and it definitely lives up to that promise. To get started, you literally just plug it in, download the app on your phone, and follow directions. It starts by turning Piper into its own Wi-Fi hotspot, which you log on to. After that, youre prompted to enter in the name of the Wi-Fi network youd actually like to connect to, followed by the password. At this point, it makes you wait a little bit while it configures itself, but if everything goes smoothly, youll have your new security system set up in about 7 to 10 minutes. All in all, setup is pretty painless.
Insofar as the exterior design, we have mixed feelings. Its aesthetically pleasing, but its also clearly a security camera, which could potentially cause problems. In terms of build quality, however, its pretty solid. Its fairly lightweight, which makes it easy to mount, but also heavy enough that it sits firmly in its stand and wont tip over easily.
The physical design is decent, but where Piper really shines is its digital design. Blacksumacs app design team absolutely nailed it here. Pipers iOS/Android app is easy, intuitive, and has practically no learning curve. The main dashboard gives you four separate modes: Off, Away, Vacation, and a setting called Stay for when youre home sleeping, but still want the system to be armed. These four settings are basically just customizable presets that you can assign different rules to like record a video when a loud noise is detected in Away mode, for example, or sound the alarm when a motion is detected in Vacation mode. This logical interface makes Piper a breeze to use.
180 degree camera
This is arguably the coolest feature on the device. Depending on where you place Piper, the cameras super wide field of view allows you to surveil a large area of your home, and in many cases eliminates the need for multiple cameras to be positioned throughout a given room. Its also equipped with a digital pan/zoom function, so you can zoom into the room and pan around without actually changing the position of the device. BlackSumacs website claims the video is HD, and it may very well be recording in HD, but if you tap into a live video stream, dont expect it to look super crisp. Even on the two blazing-fast Wi-Fi networks we tried it on, the footage came up a bit grainy and slow on our phones but not to the point where it was unusable. On the plus, side, however, we found that playback was only a second or two behind real time, even on a crappy 3G connection.
In addition to using it for live video surveillance, you can also set up Piper to record video whenever certain sensors are tripped. Once activated, Piper will record a 20-second clip, and automatically saves it to the cloud so even if an intruder breaks in and steals the camera, youll still have access to the footage. Its a smart setup, and could definitely come in handy if you should ever need to use the footage is any sort of legal proceeding but unfortunately the app doesnt offer any way to export these videos, so the only way you can access them is through your phone.

One fix for job market -

Dusty Simmons works on a vehicle at Capitol City Chrysler. Simmons attended Nichols Career Center and Linn State Technical College for auto mechanics. He worked part time at the dealership and is now a full-time certified mechanic.
More students are taking a second look at automotive repair, a high-tech career that is always in demand and cant be outsourced overseas.
For many, the first rung on the ladder is an education at Nichols Career Center, which has trained hundreds of students over the years and placed dozens in jobs at car dealerships and independent repair shops all over Jefferson City.
Dusty Simmons, 21, attended Nichols Career Center before graduating from Linn State Technical College in 2012. He grew up with a wrench in his hand, and by the age of 14 was restoring his first truck with the help of his dad.
That started it all. My dad was a mechanic in the National Guard, he said. We were always tinkering on something.
Today, he works at Capitol Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on Missouri Boulevard. He started as a part-time worker changing oil and shadowing the more-experienced employees. When he graduated, he became a full-time employee and enrolled in Chrysler school, a series of classes that teach technicians how to repair Chrysler products.
Russell Richter, the dealerships fixed-operations director, said his people have to attend 128 classes to be considered master certified.
Although some do enter the field with the know-how they learned fixing cars in the front drive, if you want advancement, a credential from a school like Linn State is essential, Richter said.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median pay for automotive service technicians and mechanics was $36,610 in 2012. Recent starting salaries for Linn State students were $25,438 on average, with a high of $41,600, according to a 180-day follow up report issued by the college. Experienced technicians can make upwards of $60,000.
Both Richter and Simmons said openings in the field are available, demand for skilled mechanics is high and the job pays a living wage.

Let this robot clean your gutters -
March 10, 2014 by
Mr HomeBuilder
I recently bought an iRobot floor cleaner, and while digging around on their site, I found they also sell a little robot that can take over the chore of cleaning out your gutters for you. The iRobot Looj Gutter Cleaning Robot is only about 2 tall X 3 wide by 15.6 long, so it fits into most gutters. Its made to withstand the wet conditions found in gutters, and it has a four-stage auger to clean out the leaves and gunk clogging them. It has a2600mAh lithium-ion battery that provides enough power to clean 200 linear feet of gutters per charge. It can clean 50 feet of gutter in five minutes while you stay safely on the ground. Youll have to climb up to get it started, of course, but the Looj has a belt clip to keep your hands free for safer climbing, and youll be able to control it with the removable handle that serves as a wireless remote with a 50 reach. (You can also control it manually, if you prefer.)
If you order from the iRobot site before11:59 P.M. (EST) on March 16, 2014, youll get a free accessory kit with extra ejectors and breakers (to change the cleaning style) and a soft storage bag. The iRobot Looj is $299.99.

Federal regulators recently accepted more than 200 nonconforming structures at Lake of the Ozarks to be grandfathered in, which was the final step in Ameren Missouris five-plus year-long campaign to have its energy license renewed. Photo by Ceil Abbott.
LAKE OZARK, Mo. Ameren officials say they are relieved a final resolution has been reached between the utility, a government agency and the Lake of the Ozarks property owners whose structures encroached on the lake's boundaries.
We are very pleased with FERCs recent order accepting our June 5, 2012, request to permit over 200 nonconforming structures at Lake of the Ozarks, said Jeff Green, Ameren Missouri shoreline manager. Although there is much work left to do in actually issuing permits for these structures, this represents the final chapter in a year-long process involving property owners, agencies and the FERC.
Green was commenting on a request from Ameren that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission allow them to grandfather in some 215 non-conforming structures as the final step in the companys five-plus years-long campaign to have its energy license renewed.
The recommendation came one year after FERCs June 2012 order to comprehensively revise the project boundary at the Lake to 662 feet above sea level and even lower in areas where private homes encroached onto its property. The order included a provision that required Ameren Missouri to inventory and recommend a plan for all remaining non-conforming decks, patios, gazebos and similar structures. For more than a year, Ameren Missouri inventoried the structures, worked with property owners and agencies before recommending its closure plan to FERC.
Although there were originally some 4,000-plus structures, including 1,500 homes, that encroached onto Amerens property, many of those structures, including all private residences, were exempted from the issue of encroachment in 2012 when Ameren redrew its boundary to a line approximately 662 feet above sea level.
In commenting on this latest decision by FERC, Green said, Our main goal from the beginning has been to work out a reasonable solution that successfully resolves issues related to the location of unauthorized lakefront decks, patios and similar structures within our project boundary. Now that FERC has approved our plan, we can now move forward with issuing permits and getting back to business as usual at the lake.
Green said it is important that lake front property owners take note that under the newly approved shoreline management plan, new decks, patios and gazebos are not allowed to encroach on that portion of the shoreline that lies below the 662-foot elevation line.
Property owners considering new construction along the shoreline should contact Green at his Lake Ozark office for information about where the 662-foot elevation line is on individual properties before starting construction.
Lake of the Ozarks is the only large privately owned body of water in Missouri built specifically for the purpose of operating a hydroelectric dam. Ameren Missouri forerunner Union Electric of St. Louis built Lake of the Ozarks in the 1930s, and today operates it under the companys license with FERC.
