    Verdict

Farmer Matt made a promising start over fences behind Caid Du Berlais here in December and the step up in trip should suit. Beforeall has already won over the larger obstacles at Fontwell and Plumpton but was beaten 10 lengths off today's mark at Huntingdon last time. BALLYTOBER found the company too hot in the Tommy Whittle at Haydock on his latest start but has been dropped a couple of pounds since earlier placed efforts here and at Chepstow and, with Richard Johnson in the saddle for the first time over fences today, can finally open his account. Super Villan is no forlorn hope if in the mood but Knockraheen makes his chasing bow.

Farmer Matt (IRE) 8-1 (11-0) Tracked leaders in 3rd, went 2nd 3 out, one pace and no chance with winner, 2nd of 5, 13l behind Caid Du Berlais (10-7) at Exeter 2m 3f nov chs (2) gd in Dec.

Beforeall (IRE) 11-4 (11-7) Tracked leader until 2nd and again from 6th until after 11th, one pace after 4 out, no impression in 3rd 2 out, went 2nd towards finish, no chance with winner, 2nd of 6, 10l behind Dare To Endeavour (10-11) at Huntingdon 3m nov hcp chs (0-125) (3) hvy in Feb.

Knockraheen (IRE) 4-1 (11-12) Close and hampered 1st, soon mid-division, ridden and weakened before 2 out, 6th of 12, 29l behind Heavenstown (10-12) at Southwell 3m hcp hdl 0-115 (4) hvy in Feb.

Super Villan 14-1 (10-0) Led narrowly and clear with one other, headed 4th, tracked leader, lost place 13th, ridden after next, weakened before 2 out, 9th of 11, well behind Indian Castle (11-3) at Cheltenham 2m 5f nov chs (2) hvy in Jan.

Ballytober 8-1 (11-5) Held up in rear, headway 5 out, chased leaders next, never on terms, 7th of 12, 43l behind Night Alliance (11-0) at Haydock 3m hcp chs 0-145 (2) sft in Dec.

Fitzgerald Fences to 2nd at States; Rifle Finishes 5th - March 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Boys' and Girls' Fencing

North Haven girls' fencing senior captain Reagan Fitzgerald earned First Team All-State honors for the second straight season by placing second in the foil competition at the Individual State Championship at Hopkins on March 1. Fitzgerald, who had finished fourth last winter, won nine bouts, including four while facing elimination to reach the title bout, where she dropped a close decision to Nicole Kogan of Hopkins.

"Reagan was unwavering in her determination and focus, leading to a dominating performance," Coach Pete Solomon said. "She and all her teammates fought for every point and are poised for an exciting run at this weekend's Team Championship [in Guilford on Saturday, March 8]."

Also placing in the top 16 in their respective brackets for the Indians were Stephanie Hoang for girls' foil, Lia Crowley and Yicai Wang for girls' pe, and Binli Huang for boys' foil. Wang won and elimination match against last year's runner-up and Huang, a junior, dominated his early matches, according to Coach Solomon.

North Haven posted a score of 932 to take fifth place at the State Championship at Blue Trails Range in Wallingford on Feb. 26. The Indians' score was 12 points better than their season average and tied for best mark they've shot in two years. Suffield posted a total of 959 out of 1,000 to win the meet.

North Haven's scorers were Jordan DeLucia (189 out of 200), Kevin Landino (188), Jeremy Piercey (187), John Quimby (186), and Brendan Quinn (182). DeLucia tied his all-time top mark with the 189 and Matt Christoforo recorded his best career score with a 165.

"Overall, I am very proud of our performance. Our goal going into this was to meet or beat our average and we did this," Coach Brent Heidenis said. "Our athletes are proud of their efforts this year and we will now take the time to cherish the Central Conference championship. We look forward to returning back to states next year and making another run at the conference title."

New Kensington repairing city-owned garage on Fourth Avenue - March 5, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Published: Wednesday, March 5, 2014, 12:56a.m. Updated 9 hours ago

New Kensington officials said they are repairing the city-owned parking garage on Fourth Avenue.

Employees and students at the Citizens School of Nursing, located in the former Citizens General Hospital on Seventh Street, have voiced concerns about the safety of the three-story structure.

Complaints include poor lighting, rusted stairwells, a non-functioning elevator, poor winter maintenance and leaking ceilings

With three open houses at the school coming up, administrator Linda Ebel said she's concerned about the parking garage as prospective students' first exposure to the school. We want our students to feel safe and like it's a good environment, Ebel said.

Councilman Tim DiMaio said the city recently fixed stairwell lighting, several doors and decking. He said the elevator has been repaired but must be inspected before it can be used.

DiMaio and City Clerk Dennis Scarpiniti said they plan to bring in an electrician to address lighting elsewhere in the garage and plan to power-wash and paint the stairwells.

DiMaio was skeptical the leaks could be fixed if it's water trickling through expansion joints in the cement. But city officials said they would examine whether any pipes or other areas are leaking.

Ebel said a homeless person who had been frequenting the garage has not been seen recently.

Mayor Tom Guzzo said the city would do all it could to ensure students and others using the garage felt safe.
