When the rains first started in Southern California, Ed Heinlein didn't think the damage to his Azusa property would be so bad. Surely, the 65-year-old homeowner thought, his backyard retaining wall, thick as a freeway barrier, would hold back the mud.
But as a precaution, Heinlein and his neighbors wedged plywood and sandbags against the ground-level walls. They took a sledgehammer and pickaxes to a small wall in his front yard to prevent mud from collecting behind it and pressing up against the house's walls.
He evacuated early Friday with five family members, including his infant grandson. He returned Saturday morning to rescue Gizmo, the family cat.
"When we drove up, we knew it was going to be bad," Heinlein said. On Friday, he said, a little mud had been strewn in the street. On Saturday, there was a lot more debris, much of it coming from his own lot.
During about 20 minutes of hard rain Saturday morning, he said, a wave of mud had rolled down the mountain, brimmed over the retaining wall and buried his backyard. The force of the mud bent a metal fence at a 45-degree angle. Only the net and backboard of his 10-foot basketball hoop were visible above the muck.
The back wall of his home seemed stable, he said, but moisture had seeped upward, turning the khaki paint a splotchy brown.
"We've got to find a way to get the one hundred tons of mud out of my backyard," Heinlein said. "We're probably looking at tens of thousands of dollars in damage."
Late Saturday morning, firefighters, engineers and geologists in rubber boots waded uncertainly into the muck, then decided it was too dangerous to do anything before the rains stopped.
Neighbors in the quiet cul-de-sac waited nervously to see if a rainstorm forecast for Saturday afternoon would make the mud any worse. Dennis Sanderson, who lives next to Heinlein, bought a pump in hopes of getting rid of some of the mud in a terrace above his backyard. It didn't work, he said, but might help if it starts to rain harder.
Insurance won't cover the damage to his home, Heinlein said a risk his family took when moving into the home more than 11 years ago.

RECAP
Repeat complete for Wilson.
Once mired at 6-7 earlier this season, the Bulldogs have reeled off 16 wins in a row, and Wilsons latest victory gave coach Doug Myers crew back-to-back District 3-AAAA championships.
Jessie Wallace had 16 points and seven rebounds and Carley Brew and Avery Marz popped in 15 points apiece on Friday night in Wilsons 51-38 win over Dover for district gold in the Giant Center.
The Bulldogs, seeded fourth and now 22-7 overall, opened up some breathing room with a 15-7 third-quarter spree; Marz got the run started with a 3-pointer and a transition layup, as Wilson picked up the pace defensively, forcing the Eagles into four third-quarter turnovers.
MAKE IT SIX FOR BULLDOGS
Thats six District 3 championships for Wilson, which also won titles in 2013, 2008, 2000, 1998 and 1997.
This was the Bulldogs ninth trip to the district title game.
THE DIFFERENCE
Wilsons third-quarter defensive pressure changed the complexion of the game.

Highlights from the question and answer session:
Is there documentation that mold can grow in cold temps? Nationals and Banks are holding vendors responsible for remediating mold for free during cold months because they are assuming we missed it on a prior order, but it is new growth.
"There are 100s of thousands of different species of molds and some even grow in ice known as cryophilic fungi. Penicillium, a very common mold we find in many damp homes is a cryophilic fungi, which means it likes the cold, growing best at 34 degrees (the temperature of a refrigerator). It is xerophilic, which means it can obtain moisture from the air if humidity is at 60% or higher. I have seen it white as well as blue.
I can go on and on that there are so may molds which grow in cold climates. Just ask the banker if he ever found mold inside a Tupperware container in the back of his/her refrigerator My 12 year old finds it all too often. Ask the banker to do an experiment; leave an orange in the refrigerator for a month or two. Ask him to describe what he sees."
If a home smells musty but there is no visible mold, what would be your recommended course of action?
"You just I am sorry to say do not have the experience to find where it is hiding. Under sill plates, in between two pieces of butted wood. Under a moisture barrier. Under furniture, carpet padding, behind walls and inside insulation. If it smells of the musty odor, it is there!"
What about propertys with a sump pump where water is sitting in the basin, does mold always exist in them?
