Methodist church closes its doors after 87 years due to 60k refurbishment bill
11:00am Saturday 1st March 2014 in News By Caitlin Marsh
THE final service of an 87-year-old methodist church in Corfe Mullen was held last Sunday.
The Rev Gwyneth Owen, minister of Wimborne Methodist Church and superintendent minister of the Christchurch and Wimborne circuits, said that there were mixed feelings at East End Methodist Church, on Wimborne Road, as it closed its doors for the last time.
She said that the congregation were able to balance the sadness they felt at the closure of the church, which opened in 1927, with a celebration of thanksgiving for the time they spent together sharing their faith in God.
She added: We remembered that we have done so much within the church up until recently, such as the lunch club, fellowship group, and crafts meetings, as well as the christenings, weddings and funerals over the years.
All homes are only temporary and so, while this church has been our spiritual home for many years, what is permanent is the relationship that we have with God and the faith that we carry with us.
We have found that many people from the community have gone on to find other churches within Corfe Mullen which they now go to, and will also continue to meet in each others houses.
East End Methodist Church needed extensive refurbishment work, at an estimated cost of 60,000, which the Rev Gwyneth Owen previously said could not be met by the congregation.
She also spoke of how nationally, the Methodist Church is looking at how people can best use local resources, including the number of church premises which are based closely together.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
(CNN) -- Shelves full of knickknacks, chairs piled precariously atop tables, dusty toys dangling from the ceiling and barely enough floorspace to set a foot down: It's a scene that's caused more than one shopper to flee a flea market.
"Like where your garage is just thrown up in your face? I get that." said Kristie Rackliffe, an antique dealer at the Queen of Hearts antique mall in Buford, Georgia.
But there's no need to fear the antique mall, say some thrifting pros, if you know what you're looking for and how to navigate through a seeker's paradise to get to it. Just be prepared to pay more at those fancy booths that don't require mountain climbing equipment.

MARYSVILLE -- It would take a keen eye to notice anything wrong with Donovan Doroski's Jeep. Sitting in the parking lot of the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office in Marysville, it's still white, it still runs and it still has all its windows.
But 20-year-old Doroski knew something was wrong.
"Iwas proud of how flawless it was,"he said, "It's going to be different."
Wednesday, the Jeep was stolen from a Seattle hotel parking garage. Doroski is in town from Hood River, Oregon for cancer treatment. His father is donating for a bone marrow transplant.
"If it works, it works,"Donovan said of the procedure, "If it doesn't, that's kind of it."
Doroski has battled cancer for three years, and the car lover got the Jeep just a month ago.
Friday, the family got word it had been found in a Granite Falls farm field.

How much personal effort went into this house? So much that the owners hired two architects one who designed the house and one who just planned the woodwork.
The owners also played major roles. Carrying blueprints, they traveled to antique dealers, auction houses, salvage shops in town or out of town, it didnt matter. They shopped online, bought pieces on eBay.
In the 2 years they were building the house finished in 2005, now listed at $5.4 million their finds filled their basement and two climate-controlled storage units with stained glass, leaded glass, chandeliers, sconces, fireplaces.
Meanwhile, the house plans morphed around their treasures. For example, they found the large, lighted dome of stained glass that now lights the center of the foyer. That dome was not part of the original plan, the owner said. But when we found it, it just changed the whole house.
Similarly in the living room, the coffered ceiling was designed around antique stained glass they found salvaged from a Chicago theater which they wanted to turn into a light for the pool table. The same with the fireplace mantels, the owner said. The house was adjusted around the pieces we bought.
Back up a minute pool table in the living room?
Yes. For all its grand details, the house is geared for their big, active family four grown kids and 11 grandkids, all living nearby. Theres no precious dont-touch room reserved for royalty.
That includes the kitchen, an inviting country French space big enough for the whole gang to hang out. Theres also a large playroom with multiple bunk beds for sleepovers and a wooden play structure out back.
Throughout this house, though, the dominant feature is massive mahogany woodwork. Not only did this woodwork have its own architect, by the owners count, it took 22,000 hours of carpentry.
Second to that is the extensive plasterwork. Halls, main rooms, even some minor rooms have barrel ceilings, tray ceilings, etched plaster or carved plaster. Then there are the doors mahogany and the windows, many stained, beveled or leaded.
