BOWA Wins Regional Contractor of the Year Award - March 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

McLean, VA (PRWEB) March 26, 2014

BOWA (http://www.bowa.com), a design build firm specializing in luxury renovations ranging from master suites and kitchens to whole-house and whole-condo remodels, recently received a prestigious regional Contractor of the Year (CotY) award from the National Association of Remodeling Industry (NARI).

BOWA was also recently a top vote-getter in Bethesda Magazines 2014 Best of Bethesda awards.

The BOWA team is honored to have been recognized as one of the top remodelers in the country by the national NARI organization, said Josh Baker, founder of BOWA. We are committed to providing all of our customers with the highest quality design and remodeling services, and we are thrilled to see our hard work recognized.

BOWA tied for first place in NARIs southeast region for a CotY award in the following category: Residential Kitchen over $120,000. Competing projects had to have been completed between July 1, 2012, and November 30, 2013, and were selected as winners by a panel of experts in the remodeling industry and associated fields. Project portfolios included before and after photography and project descriptions. Judges ranked contestants based on problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation and degree of difficulty.

Regional winners go on to compete for national CotY recognition, with winners to be announced late March.

BOWAs CotY award was for a project in Great Falls, Va. that involved transforming an outdated kitchen into an elegant and modern space for a growing family. With a focus on improving traffic flow and increasing natural light, storage and display space, the design solution involved removing an awkward wall between the breakfast room and kitchen. A second island was created for casual dining and storage, and glass-front cabinets were used to visually lighten a wall of cabinetry and achieve the desired display area. Creative design solutions, exquisite materials and fine craftsmanship helped to make this kitchen remodel a hallmark project for BOWA.

In addition to the NARI award, BOWA was also recently recognized by Bethesda Magazine as a top vote-getter in the Best Remodeling Firm category by the magazines readers in the annual Best of Bethesda award competition.

Workday plans new Pleasanton office building that could have 2,100 workers - March 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Workday has proposed construction of a six-story office building near Stoneridge Mall and the nearby BART station in Pleasanton that would total 430,000 square feet and have enough room for 1,700 to 2,100 employees when fully occupied. The building is adjacent to Workday's current corporate headquarters in Pleasanton. (City of Pleasanton)

PLEASANTON -- Workday plans a major expansion in Pleasanton by constructing a large new office building that could have up to 2,100 employees, city officials said Wednesday.

The software company hopes to build a six-story, 430,000-square-foot office building on 6.9 acres of vacant land it is negotiating to buy from BART. The new offices would be next to Workday's current headquarters near Stoneridge mall.

"We are really excited that Workday sees an opportunity to grow and expand and maintain their headquarters presence in Pleasanton," said Pamela Ott, the city's economic development director. "More Workday employees will be living, shopping, eating in Pleasanton. And there should be more hotel visits as customers visit Workday."

Workday, which offers Web-based business software primarily for human resources, currently occupies more than 250,000 square feet in Pleasanton and employs more than 1,400 people, said company spokesman Eric Glass.

In addition to its new planned building, Workday may eventually expand into a five-building office complex known as Stoneridge Corporate Plaza that is next door to its headquarters. Workday co-founder David Duffield, through a company he controls named NPC Holdings, bought that complex a year ago, but it is currently occupied by other tenants. It potentially could provide enough space for an additional 3,000 workers.

Pleasanton-based Workday launched an initial public offering in October 2012, raising $637 million through the first-time sale of its stock, which was priced at $28. On Wednesday, Workday's shares closed at $92.59, up 231 percent from the IPO price.

Workday is still losing money. However, for its 2014 fiscal year that ended in January, it generated revenue of $468 million, up 71 percent from the year before.

"Workday could have leased some of the older buildings in the area, but they chose to construct a brand-new building that meets the standards of what young tech engineers want," said Edward Del Beccaro, a managing director with Transwestern, a commercial realty brokerage.

This expansion also bodes well for the ongoing efforts by the East Bay to attract more tech companies.

CoBank leases 11-story office tower in Greenwood Village for headquarters - March 27, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

CoBank will move its headquarters to a new 11-story office tower to be developed in Greenwood Village.

Shea Properties said Tuesday that CoBank has executed a long-term lease for the 296,000-square-foot building, which will be named CoBank Center.

The building will be part of Shea Properties' Village Center Station development along Interstate 25 between Orchard and Arapahoe roads. Construction of the building will start in coming weeks with completion scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2015.

CoBank's current headquarters is at 5500 S. Quebec St. in Greenwood Village, a building it has occupied since the bank was formed in 1989.

"Colorado continues to see companies make capital investments in the state, which is not only helping our economy recover, but shows that it is picking up momentum," Gov. John Hickenlooper said in a statement.

Peter Culshaw, executive vice president of Shea Properties, said the developer is negotiating with prospective tenants for another new office building, the nine-story Village Station Center II. That building will mark the completion of the office and retail development.

Davis Partnership has been the architect for each of the three phases of Village Center Station. Adolfson & Peterson Construction will be the general contractor for new construction. CoBank was represented by Barry Dorfman and Billy Byrne of Jones Lang LaSalle and Shea Properties was represented by Tim Harrington and Tom Lee of Newmark Grubb Knight Frank.

Dexter Fowler wasnt gritty enough to be the Rockies center fielder - March 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

All this time I thought they played baseball games and then I read this from Mark Kiszla of the Denver Post and find out that Jiminy Christmas! theyre wrestling in gutters!

Thats how Kiszla puts it, anyway, after acknowledging that the Rockies have a hole in center field now that they traded away Dexter Fowler. But never fear: its fighting time:

The Rockies, however, are better off without Fowler.

My choice to play center: Corey Dickerson. You want the Rockies to bring a dirt-bag attitude that can wrestle with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the gutter, then Dickerson is your center fielder.

Kiszla can be forgiven, however, in that hes merely following Walt Weiss lead:

In our sport, more than any other sport, the ability to compete and grind and play with grit is extremely important, because we have to play at the highest level virtually every day for seven months. Theres no other sport like that, Weiss said Monday. The ability to compete through difficult circumstances and still believe you can play up here even when you get beat up by the game The self doubt, even though it does creep in, if you can deal with that and still succeed, its the X factor.

I have no doubt that attitude is a big factor in dealing with a long grind of a season. But if Dickerson couldnt hit the cover off the ball which he did in the minors, at least all the grit in the world isnt going to help him help the Rockies win baseball games. And if he cant handle center field, as opposed to his natural position in left, he can grind all he wants. Hell just be grinding two or three steps short of those balls in the gap which are his responsibility to track down.

Absent extreme attitude deficiencies, which Fowler has never been reported to have, what Dickerson does or Fowler could have done to help the Rockies win are functions of baseball skill and performance, not their gritty-grinding-gutter-wrestling-ways. But hey, if it helps people accept the trade of an otherwise effective player and the installation of a guy who may not be able to handle the position, well, any cliches at hand, I suppose.

New grow lamps help crews make Miller Park grass pristine - March 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MILWAUKEE -- Take a look outside and still see some white snow, brown mud and some patches of yellowish grass. But inside Miller Park, a gorgeous green field awaits the Brewers return thanks, in large part, to some new grow lamps.

"The research is really working in our favor at this point and is definitely going to be an asset to us as a grounds department," Brewers Grounds Director Michael Boettcher said.

The brewers bought the grow lamps in Europe over the off-season. They simulate sunshine on sections of the field for 24-hours at a time. That's helped repair some areas that were affected by frost over the winter.

"We are getting some temperatures up, we're feeding the turf a little bit here, slowly," Boettcher said. "Then with the lights, you know it's definitely starting to get ready."

Milwaukee County Golf courses can't say the same thing yet. Fresh snow forced Dean Wilde and his buddies inside Wauwatosa's Currie Park Golf Dome Tuesday.

"It was kind of a let down, because we were looking for warm weather and to get out there and swing the clubs and the courses to open, but no," Wilde said.

County courses hope most of the snow melts away by the end of the week. But grounds crews will then need to clean fairways and greens before anyone can hit the links.

"There's going to be a lot of tree branches down, some leaves from last fall," Parks Golf Turf Manager Jon Canavan said. "We get a blower out, we mow the greens, rake the bunkers up."

Back at Miller Park, the infield rakes were already out and mowers cut their first patterns in the lamp-aided sod. Boettcher couldn't put a dollar figure on how much the heat lamps cost, but he says they're worth the price tag.

"When it comes to putting out a quality field for our quality team we have out here, you know, the investment is still looked at as a good investment for the organization," Boettcher said.
