Spring Brings Messy Lawns - March 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Spring may have sprung, but it will be hard to forget a long winter after you look at your lawn.

Saturated grass, downed tree limbs and snow mold are all effects of a brutal winter that MSU consumer horticulturists are finding hard to top.

"There's been some very severe low temperatures this winter, there were heavy winds, heavy snow loads, so we will see damage later in the spring," said Consumer Horticulturist Bob Bricault.

"There hasn't been a thaw," agreed Consumer Horticulturist Rebecca Krans. "We've had lots of snow and wind, which causes drying, desiccation of tissues."

Snow mold, which forms under snow cover, plagues Dana Davis's lawn in Mason. The horticulturist's yard is dotted with brown spots. But it looks worse than it is, Davis said.

"It's not a big deal," he said. "Usually a light raking and the grass will recuperate and a little fertilizer."

Occasionally, the grass will require some reseeding, Davis said, but the bigger pain will be in clearing up damage from salt and plows, something that could also make a dent in the checkbook.

"Peoples' budgets have been crunched because of snow removal," he said. "So this cleanup and all this snow is really challenging peoples' budgets."

But for many lawn companies, the cleanup can't start for several more weeks. Davis says he's expecting his employer, Outdoor Specialties, will be pushed back 2-3 weeks.

"In the green industry, it just means when the weather's nice we've gotta hustle a little harder to get caught up," he said. "It's always a challenge. Mother Nature's not often kind."

Shortage in garden fences, say DIY stores - March 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Firm Forest Gardens, which supplies timber products to DIY and gardening stores nationwide, has taken on 100 new workers to try and meet a fivefold rise in demand for fence panels.

Its sales director John Gomersall said: "We're witnessing demand that is upwards of five times the normal level - and still increasing.

"The shortage is primarily due to insufficient raw material availability, caused by both the recent upturn in demand for construction timber and the unusual series of five major storm periods since November of last year, leading to a dramatic upturn in demand for replacement fence panels.

"The storms may have died down but the long-term implications are still being felt.

"Add to this the fact that Spring marks the time of year when we'd normally be building stock levels ahead of the core gardening period and you can begin to understand the pressures that suppliers such as ourselves and retailers and trade outlets are currently dealing with."

Streatham, south-west London based firm Premier Sheds & Fencing has posted a prominent warning on its website.

It reads: 'Due to high demand and shortage of fencing timber, prices are changing daily. Please phone for current prices.'

Prices for its six-foot fence panels have risen twice in a week - up 50 per cent from 20 to 30 - and they are still out of stock.

Simone Gallen, editor of magazine Fencing & Landscaping News, said that there are reports of DIY enthusiasts going to great lengths to grab any available timber as demand outstrips supply from sawmills.

She said: "There is panic buying with prices soaring since the storms at the end of 2013.

Gardeners have been hit by a national shortage of fences at the height of the DIY season - with panels changing hands for up to four times their usual price on the black market.

Prices have rocketed to record levels as a result of a 'perfect storm' of severe winter weather and a housebuilding boom.

Many DIY chains and hardware stores have run out of traditional lap fencing, which is being offered for up to 80 a panel to panic buyers on the black market.

There has been a staggering surge in demand for fence panels, pushing the price up to four times than normal

    Verdict

The veteran NOZIC had dropped to his lowest ever mark when gaining his 10th success over fences at Plumpton and though 6lb higher he should still take some beating. He's handed the vote over Tokyo Javilex, who was having just his second start over fences when scoring at Sedgefield but has been raised 7lb. Mon Chevalier's form figures flatter him as he's been beaten a long way in recent starts but Walden Prince has shown enough potential in three runs over fences to be considered. Islandmagee has only had three runs over fences and definitely improved on his latest start at Wincanton.

Tokyo Javilex (FR) 10-11fav (11-8) Raced in last, jumped slowly and reminder 1st, jumped right 5th, headway after 9th, challenged last (normal 2 out), led bypassing omitted last, soon clear, stayed on well, won at Sedgefield 2m hcp chs 0-100 (5) sft beating Sendiym (11-7) by 4 1/2l, 5 ran.

Mon Chevalier (IRE) 8-1 (11-7) Held up in last pair but well in touch, outpaced after 13th, went modest 4th before 3 out, went left final 3, 4th of 5, 25l behind Tolkeins Tango (11-9) at Wincanton 2m 5f hcp ch 0-110 (4) sft.

Islandmagee (IRE) 3-1 (11-9) Tracked leading pair, went 2nd before 8th until before 3 out, went 2nd again 3 out, ridden and no impression after 2 out, lost modest 2nd post, 3rd of 5, 5l behind Martin Cash (10-7) at Wincanton 2m hcp chs 0-105 (4) sft.

Walden Prince (IRE) 4-1 (10-11) Held up in rear, not fluent 1st or 3rd, headway 7th, challenged before last, stayed on, held towards finish, 2nd of 5, 2 3/4l behind Tri Nations (10-6) at Stratford 2m 1f nov hcp chs 0-115 (4) gf in Jul.

Nozic (FR) 5-2 (11-12) Tracked leader, led before 2 out, ridden and stayed on strongly run in, won at Plumpton 2m 1f hcp ch 0-110 (4) sft beating Dynamic Idol (11-11) by 2 3/4l, 5 ran.

Former St. Charles County emergency director enters executive race - March 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ST. CHARLES COUNTY Rodney Zerr, St. Charles Countys former emergency management director, filed Tuesday as a Democratic candidate for county executive.

Zerr, who was laid off in 2010 during a budget crunch, said hes an alternative to career politicians.

He said that includes incumbent Steve Ehlmann, a former state legislator and circuit judge, and Ehlmanns Republican primary opponent state Rep. Doug Funderburk, who previously was a county councilman.

I have a concern with career politicians staying in office for extended lengths of time, jumping from one office to another, said Zerr, 61. It goes for both.

Ehlmann, of St. Charles, disputed Zerrs characterization. Politics has been my third career, Ehlmann said.

He said he was a teacher for nine years, then a lawyer in private practice while serving part time in the Legislature. His full-time government jobs began when he was elected judge 14 years ago. The executives post also is full time.

Funderburk also expressed irritation, pointing out hes been a part-time county and state lawmaker while an electrician at Boeing Co., where hes worked more than 30 years. In contrast, he said, Zerr was a full-time government employee for decades.

Zerr, who lives near OFallon, said he didnt enter the race out of spite against Ehlmann. When he was laid off, Zerr said, the emergency office he headed was part of the sheriffs department. Earlier his agency was under the executive.

Zerr held professional public safety jobs for 32 years, including 12 years as emergency director. His brother, Rick Zerr, is a GOP circuit judge first elected as a Democrat. Their first cousin is married to state Rep. Anne Zerr, R-St. Charles.

Tuesday was the last day to file for the Aug. 5 primary.
