Home theaters are growing in popularity - June 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Joe J.C. Ganote celebrated Fathers Day with his son and grandchildren at his home in Lees Summit, Mo. But if the younger Ganotes hadnt made the cross-country trip from San Diego, you can bet that grandpa would have logged on to Skype to watch them on the 106-inch screen in his basement.

We can see them walking around. They ham it up, boy! They know they are on camera, J.C. Ganote said about the 11-month-old twins, Michela and Caleb.

Across town, Terry Maskil of Shawnee, Kan., often settles into one of the plush reclining theater chairs next to his sons Adam, 13, and Nicholas, 6, to watch a movie in their basement home theater, which features a 120-inch screen.

These days, home theaters are the family rooms, and money can buy you all the amenities, including surround sound, subwoofers and popcorn makers.

8 On Your Side: Home warranty woes - June 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LAS VEGAS Home warranties are something many southern Nevadans rely on, but what happens when your home warranty company doesn't deliver in your time of need?

In theory, home warranties sound like a good idea. If something goes wrong with an appliance in your home, you pay an affordable deductible and they foot the bill to fix it or get it replaced. But, 8 On Your Side has found out more often than not it doesn't quite work out that way.

    So, what's the deal?

First, when you need a repair, you must make a claim, pay a deductible, and then use a repairmen of your warranty company's choosing. That's when you find out if it can go fast or very slowly.

"You have literally no say in who fixes it or how fast its done," says 8 On Your Side's Michelle Mortensen.

There's also a second problem. One that homeowner Fay Zoeller recently ran into.

After Zoeller's air conditioning broke, it took forever to talk to a real person. Once she did, they sent several repairmen. One-by-one, however, they refused the job.

"He called me on Monday and said, 'I'm sorry. My boss says we can't take the job that this company is not in good standing and they don't pay bills,'" Zoeller said.

Which leads to the third problem: most of these companies are based out-of-state, have bad reputations, and are impossible to get ahold of.

Because of issues Zoeller had, her A/C unit is now past her policy's expiration.

This DIY security system looks like an iPad, protects like a Sentri - June 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sentri units are available on Kickstarter now for $249, but pricing will increase by at least $100 once they make it to production. Kronosight

Kronosight, a startup composed of Asus, Acer, and HTC alums, launched a Kickstarter campaign on June 10 for Sentri, a DIY home security system with a distinct Apple vibe. Within 48 hours, Sentri had already exceeded its $200,000 funding goal -- so far, it has 706 backers and $236,968 in pledges. Contributions of $249 or more (the $199 contribution level has already sold out) earn backers one of the first manufactured Sentri units.

Sentri doesn't look like an IP camera competitor, but it has a lot of the same features as Piper, a highly rated all-in-one home security camera I reviewed in 2013 and Canary, another comprehensive DIY system that's available for preorder now and expected to ship in November 2014. The main difference between them lies in design execution.

Where Piper and Canary are controlled entirely on their related apps, Sentri adds a home screen interface where you can access details directly, like the current temperature, humidity, weather, light detection, and air quality. Each Sentri also has a built-in HD camera, motion detector, microphone, and speaker, along with night-vision capabilities.

Kronosight has plans to transform its Sentri units into hubs for third-party smart lights, locks, and thermostats, too. Right now, it lists Nest, Belkin WeMo, Philips Hue, and Lockitron as its partnered integrations. But since Sentri is supposed to be able to recognize any device with an open API/SDK via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, there's potential to add more over time.

Sentri has a height and width of 9.4 inches and a depth of 1.5 inches. Kronosight

Like Piper and Canary, Sentri is designed to be a straightforward do-it-yourself install. It's also supposedly equipped with a learning algorithm similar to the Nest Learning Thermostat and the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat. That means that it should be able to track your usage patterns and adapt accordingly, sending you alerts when something unexpected happens (e.g., a huge temperature swing or a motion trigger).

This smart-security-system-turned-home-automation-hub has a lot of potential, especially since Kronosight claims to already be in communication with OEMs for production. Early contributors who help fund the project are scheduled to receive their Sentri units by May 2015. And after the Kickstarter campaign ends, Sentri units are expected to retail for closer to $350.
