Former Springs Health Club demolished to make way for furniture store
3:14pm Tuesday 10th June 2014 in News
A DERELICT former health club has been demolished at Teesside Retail Park to make way for a 4.5m furniture store.
Springs Health Club, which has stood empty and decaying at the entrance to the Stockton shopping park since 2007, has been flattened to make way for a new Barker and Stonehouse store which will also house its head office.
The huge store, the size of a football pitch, will include an in-store cafe, two floors of retail space and a car park for almost 100 cars.
Site manager Dennis McLuckie, of contractors McLuckie Projects, said: "Its great to be on-site and able to get started with the project. Were hoping to begin the construction phase in early July and to be weather-tight by Christmas.
The store is planned to open for early 2015. Barker and Stonehouse was founded in Stockton in 1946 and following expansion it is now a national retailer, with showcase stores in London and across the country.
James Barker, managing director of Barker and Stonehouse, said: This is going to be a spectacular store and will be a great asset to the Teesside Retail Park and wider Teesside area.
"Building work is expected to create work for about 60 to 70 local tradesmen and the shop is expected to employ around 40 full-time staff.
"News that the Springs site will finally be regenerated and replaced with a new Barker and Stonehouse store is really welcome."

High-end home dcor retailer Restoration Hardware is getting blasted for its latest mailing.
Instead of sending several catalogs throughout the year, they're sending customers one batch with their entire inventory.
The problem is, its a whopping 15 pound bundle of catalogs, which is causing customers to shake their heads.
The super-sized catalogs contain more than 3,300 pages of inventory.
The company says the once-a-year mailing will actually save money and paper.
But customers have been returning the catalogs to the Restoration Hardware store in Seattles University Village shopping center.
"I don't need these and I didn't want to recycle them because I thought it was a waste, said Rachel MacDougal, of Seattle.
Another University Village customer, Cady Miller, said, It seems unnecessary to receive something like that. I don't even get the phone book at home."
That reminded us of 2010, when the City of Seattle banned the Yellow Pages, saying it was a waste of paper.
More than 75,000 Seattle residents opted-out of getting the Yellow Pages.

AFTER: Removing a wall that separated the more formal living room from the less formal family room provided more natural light in both spaces and a more usable space for entertaining.
Trina Knudsen
Last week, we talked about the move-versus-remodel debate. That is the first decision you have to make when you accept your house isn't working for you and you need a change. If you decide to stay put and that remodeling is the way to go, the next phase of the design process is programming.
Programming is determining what you will need to make your house function so it can support your life and family goals.
Every room in your house should be used at least once a day for something useful. Having square feet in your home that sit idle day after day is wasteful. Why heat, cool, clean and pay taxes on space that isnt contributing to you or your family?
Many clients feel they need more space, so the first thing they think of is an addition when, many times, they are not using the space they already have to its full potential. Therefore, remodeling by repurposing existing space can accomplish the same functional goal as an addition but with less cost and disruption.
Another option, less drastic than a full-blown addition, is a small bump-out in a strategic place. For instance, your kitchen may not have enough width to add that island you want, or your master bath shower may be the size of a postage stamp, so a few feet could make all the difference. Pushing the exterior wall out two feet can open up a range of possibilities that could solve all kinds of issues.
How do you decide if you need a significant addition, an interior remodel or something in between? Talk to an architect! Analyzing your house and how you use it is key to the conversation you will have when you sit down with an architect in the beginning phase of your project.
Besides discussing how you currently use your house and what problems you are encountering, you should consider hopes and dreams. Do you wish you could entertain but dont feel comfortable having people over to your house? Do you want to be able to have Grandma and Grandpa come stay during the holidays, but don't have a guest room available for them? How would your lifestyle be different if your house were different? What kinds of things would you like to do if your house werent holding you back? A well-designed remodel can actually help you live better on a daily basis.
A good design should focus on the end user. At our office, we call it life-centered design. How are you actually going to live in this space? How will you use it every day? The plan should be designed with your lifestyle in mind.

Happiness is like a room without a roof, in the words of that ubiquitous hit song, Happy.
Happiness is also a home with a good roof, especially in the oft-soggy Pacific Northwest.
Every homeowner wants a roof that looks attractive, doesnt leak, lasts for many years and doesnt cost too much. But in these days of climate change and waste consciousness, a roof should also meet high environmental standards.
Fortunately, plenty of green choices are available that can indeed make you happy about your roof.
Hot roofs
The environmental impact of a roof depends largely on the roofing material. For angled or pitched roofs, material choices include asphalt, wood, metal, clay, concrete, slate, plastic, rubber or a combination.
For a flat roof, the main choice is still the traditional hot tar created with asphalt and oil, although greener alternatives exist, such as planted vegetation roofs.
Before you decide on the material, consider what you want from your roof.
If you plan to install rooftop solar panels someday, youll need a type of roofing material that will accommodate and hopefully outlast them. Solar panels are commonly installed on standard asphalt shingle roofs, but metal roofs work even better.
Many Seattle-area residents collect rain runoff from their roofs in rain barrels or cisterns. If you use this water for the birds or for watering edible plants, avoid certain cedar shakes or other roofing materials that may leach chemicals, such as flame retardants.

Where does a franchise called "How to Train Your Dragon" go after said dragon is already trained? The second installment in the DreamWorks Animation series, written and directed by Dean DeBlois and featuring the voices of Jay Baruchel and Cate Blanchett, responds to that conundrum with an expanded scope and even snazzier visuals.
According to film critics, "How to Train Your Dragon 2" hits a few rough spots, but largely flies high.
The Associated Press' Jocelyn Noveck wrote that moviegoers will be "happily surprised at the new twists ['Dragon 2'] takes -- sort of like getting an unexpected second candy bar in the vending machine. 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' doesn't play it safe, and that's why it's the rare sequel that doesn't feel somewhat stale."
In addition to offering "visual delights," she said, the movie "travels into darker areas than its predecessor, displaying an admirable maturity. Many animated tales involve dashing acts of bravery, but rarely do they show the possible tragic consequences of such acts."
The Village Voice's Stephanie Zacharek said that in some ways, "Dragon 2" is "inferior" to its predecessor: "The plot is needlessly busy, and much of the action is more manic and indistinct. But 'How to Train Your Dragon 2' cuts deeper than the first picture ... and there are a few sequences of cartoon grandeur."
She added that "DeBlois keeps the story moving efficiently enough" and delivers "some finely tuned dramatic moments, including a tragic twist that might be too intense for really little kids." Best of all, the movie marks the return of the trusty dragon steed Toothless, "one of the most beautifully designed characters in modern animation, perhaps in all of animation, period."
Entertainment Weekly's Joe McGovern similarly wrote, "While the original movie benefited from narrative simplicity and an admirable lack of villains, this one paints the screen with too many characters and frequent diversions from the main story, but nevertheless serves up a bountiful and sugary feast for the 3-D-bespectacled eyes."
Djimon Hounsou's bad guy is "the vision of banal cartoon evil," and "the moral takeaway is cut-and-dried this time," he said, but on the plus side, "the movie's visual scope is magnificent" and the "offbeat" score works. In sum, "[t]he flight path needs straightening, but this is still a franchise that knows how to fly."
The New York Post's Lou Lumenick called "Dragon 2" a "worthwhile if not-quite-as-delightful sequel" that "offers some stunningly beautiful sequences and an engaging, if at times quite dark, story line." He adds that "[t]here is some wonderful stuff here," including a love-song duet between Blanchett and Gerard Butler.
"At the risk of being branded a heretic," Lumenick continued, "I found their unpolished singing preferable to the Broadway belting in 'Frozen' -- and, as a coming-of-age story, 'Dragon 2' is a lot fresher and more inventive than Pixar's thematically similar 'Brave.'"
