Southbridge club celebrates Carter's success - June 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    CHARLES ANDERSON and JOHN KIRK-ANDERSON

Jack Earl is gearing up to mark Dan Carter on his return to club rugby

The 24-year-old landscape architect who was to mark arguably the best rugby player in the world arrived to training by minivan.

He stepped out into the floodlit night fog, onto the sodden earth of North Canterbury's Omihi, and tried to contain his fear.

It was not that Jack Earl was worried that he might be shown up on the pitch by Dan Carter. It was that, on the All Black's first match in six months, Earl might accidentally injure him.

"Gosh," the Glenmark first five-eight said, "Imagine having all of New Zealand after you."

When Earl began the season, having to mark one of the best players in the world was not his concern. It was about getting match fit.

"I'm trying not to focus on DC himself - he's got more things to worry about like the bounce of the ball. It's not all going to go his way, right?"

Carter, who has been on sabbatical since earning his 100th test cap against England in London last November, will start at first five-eighth in the Luisetti Seeds division one play-off match when Southbridge host Glenmark this afternoon.

But that rostering decision was not without its issues. The captain of Southbridge, Shannon Donald, also plays the position. He has decided to move one position out.

Yard of the Month connects to nature preserve - June 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

June Yard of the Month winners Rickey Anderson and Julie Hansen of 4107 Saxony Circle have a backyard that blends into the adjoining Riverside Prairie Preserve. It's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.

"It's like a nature preserve in the backyard," Anderson said.

Anderson and Hansen, who live in Woodbury Heights, will often spot foxes, bobcats, turkeys, pheasants, raccoons, woodchucks, red tail hawks, eagles and other wildlife from their back door. They alsoreceive visits from birds, such as hummingbirds andorioles.

From the ridge, the homeowners can see Ponca State Park, Elk Point, Port Neal and other places of interest in the Siouxland area.

"It overlooks the Dakota Dunes development. It's an amazing view," said Hansen, an equipment operator for MidAmerican Energy.

The couple haveenjoyed thescenery for the past six years. It's what drew them to the property and made them decide to live there.

When Anderson and Hansenbought their home, they made several enhancements. They brought in rock, which they placed above the back wall, around their deck, and next to the house. They also built one of the berms.

Around the house they planted a variety of perennials including daylilies, barberry bushes, Royal Candles, fountain grass, an Oriental lilac tree, hostas and a red azalea bush. Under the white flowering crabtreetree in the front yardare Russian sage, daylilies, hostas, and knockout roses that the homeowners had to replant because of the cold winter. On the side of the house are dark purple irises that look like velvet, and in the backyard, around the deck, are lilac bushes and purple salvia.

In the back, on the wall, the homeowners put ina row of catmint, another perennial. It attracts a lot of bumblebees.

"Deer don't disturb it," said Anderson, who is retired from the postal service. "When you have wildlife, you have to work with them. They like to eat plants. They love geraniums, so you have to spray. Otherwise, there will be none left the next day."

Three Parks and Beaches projects making headway - June 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Ashley Mackin

Three coastal improvement projects under the auspices of La Jolla Parks and Beaches (LJPB) were discussed at its May 19 meeting the WindanSea S-Curve, Childrens Pool Walk Beautification, and Whale View Point.

The final stage of the WindanSea S-Curve project and the first stage of the Childrens Pool Walk Beautification project each needed an initial assessment from the citys Planning Division that required a $5,000 deposit.

The Windansea S-Curve project would fix the posts, chains and sidewalk gaps along Neptune Place

The good news from the assessment for Childrens Pool Walk (and for project organizer Phyllis Minick) is that the plans are classified as a replacement project, and therefore are exempt from requiring a Coastal Development Permit and CEQA Environmental Impact Report (EIR).

Our worst fears have not been realized, Neri said. It improves our chances of having Childrens Pool Walk be part of the current lifeguard tower construction and our chances (of finishing on schedule) are better.

One fee Neri said he is hoping to avoid is the city-imposed project management fee. With projects like this, he said, the city typically assigns a project manager, who would collect about 30 percent of the project cost. However, because LJPB and Minick are essentially managing the project, Neri said hes hopeful that District 1 City Councilmember Sherri Lightner will go to bat for the project and waive the need for a project manager and the costs associated with that.

As soon as all the boxes are checked from the Planning Division assessment, Neri and Minick will apply for the next required assessment from the Department of Engineering.

Because the work takes place on a public right-of-way, the Department of Engineering must weigh in. Once that application is submitted, it takes two to three months to obtain a permit.

The project would repair the sidewalk and improve the appearance of the area above Childrens Pool. To minimize cost and take advantage of closures and contractors already on site (for the tower work) construction would need to begin by mid-August.

House Calls: Interior refresher - June 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Whether you are thinking of selling your home or just want an updated look, deciding to make some changes to your interior design can be both challenging and exciting.

While the staging process and designing can be intimidating, it doesn't have to be. The process can be invigorating and can make your home feel refreshed.

If you are ready to put your home on the real estate market, consider depersonalizing your living space. Potential buyers need to have the ability to envision their own photographs, sentimental pieces and artwork in the home.

For example, this means removing a photograph of Grandma and Grandpa from the living room wall and taking your child's artwork off the refrigerator. While this may be difficult for some homeowners, remember that your personal items can easily be stored and ready-to-go when you find your new home.

De-cluttering also is a wonderful way to re-emphasize the design and beauty of your home.

Because homeowners can have difficulty recognizing when their items become too much, it can be beneficial to enlist the assistance of a professional interior designer or a trusted friend for their opinion.

A home is very personal, and these individuals can be more objective when deciding on colors, furniture pieces and decor.

Next, consider your furniture when redesigning your home. Over the years, furniture has become larger, while most room sizes have not increased proportionately. Storing some of your furniture pieces or scaling back on the amount of furniture can greatly change the view of your rooms.

Do you really need a five-piece bedroom set if you already have a walk-in closet? Are most of the drawers sitting empty? If so, think about removing some of the excess furniture that is not being utilized.

Be sure to concentrate on the unique features of your home. If you have fantastic architecture or a beautiful fireplace, concentrate on those aspects of the rooms. The placement of furniture should accent these attributes, not cover them.
