Feng Shui keeps evil at bay when building on Okinawa - June 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Natalie Nakamatsu

Shuri Castle, its location and orientation of all buildings within its compound were all thoroughly vetted using Feng Shui when the original was constructed. The current restored castle was built in exactly same location.

Feng shui is a Chinese philosophical system aimed at harmonizing human existence with the surrounding environment.

Feng Shui spread to the world from China, especially to East and Southeast Asia. It was introduced to the Ryukyu Kingdom sometime at the end of the 14th century with early Chinese immigrants. Feng Shui, as written in Chinese and Japanese kanji characters, literally translates as wind (fuu) and water (sui).

Ishiganto stones are Feng Shui objects commonly used in Okinawa for the purpose of warding off evil spirits,

A Chinese writer and scholar Guo Pu during the Eastern Jin dynasty wrote book The Book of Burial that is considered to be the earliest source of Feng Shui doctrine.

Feng Shui sets the rules based on wind and water that control geographical conditions that in turn control the movement of Qi, a living energy or power invisible to the human eye. Since Guo Pu wrote the doctrine on Feng Shui, this method has been practiced in order to create and determine the most ideal environment and placement of important structures such as dwellings and tombs to ensure good fortune and protection against disasters.

According to records from the Ryukyu government, in the mid 17th century students were sent to Chinas Fujian Province to study geography where they were introduced to methods of Feng Shui. Since the 18th century until this day, people in Okinawa and other East Asian regions use Feng Shui as a highly important tool when building tombs, to determine their style and shape and direction, believing this would affect the fortune of the whole family and prosperity of descendants.

The most representative building on Okinawa, in which Feng Shui was used would be Shuri Castle. Surrounding the castle are hills, which represent the guardian deities of the four cardinal points, and the location of the castle was considered the perfect spot for good power to build up. Of course, not only the location, but also the structure of the buildings inside the castle were all determined according to Feng Shui.

Most old villages in Okinawa were also laid out according to rules of Feng Shui, the most desirable location for the village houses being between a mountain and the ocean. A feature special to Okinawa are fukugi trees that were planed around the houses and along roads to protect against typhoons and the annual rainy season.

Fences go up at White Rock waterfront as Transport Canada makes safety moves - June 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

METRO VANCOUVER They say good fences may make good neighbours but a decision by Transport Canada isn't making White Rock residents feel very neighbourly.

On Tuesday, work began to install a two-metre locked gate at the west beach boat launch near Bay Street on Marine Drive.

The city received an order from the federal ministry on June 6 to close public access to the boat launch immediately.

"It's what I would term, on my better day, as being a kneejerk bureaucratic reaction," said White Rock Mayor Wayne Baldwin who is strongly opposed to the decision.

This was the first in a series of safety measures that Transport Canada ordered the city and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp., which owns the rail line, to take after a review spurred by the death of 42-year-old Anita Lewis in July 2013. Lewis died after being hit by a train while jogging on east beach near Finlay Street.

In February an elderly man with dementia was also hit and suffered head injuries.

Additional sections of fencing are set to be installed along the rail line at the bottom of Coldicutt Ravine and running east of Finlay Street by the end of June - effectively closing access at these points along the beach.

Trains will also be required to blow their whistles more frequently while passing pedestrian areas.

According to Baldwin, a railroad inspector came to White Rock a few weeks ago to assess the situation. In that assessment the inspector reported seeing huge numbers of people illegally on the tracks, cars parked on the crossing at the boat launch and even a baby carriage left on the rails - claims which Baldwin feels are unfair and inaccurate.

"I cannot see a mother doing that. I've never seen that in my life. I don't know what he's talking about," he said.

Feds declare western mouse endangered amid land dispute - June 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

This undated file photo provided by the New Mexico Game and Fish Department shows a New Mexican meadow jumping mouse at a marsh near Espanola, N.M. ASSOCIATED PRESS

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A rare mouse found in New Mexico and two other western states now has protection under the Endangered Species Act, and that's expected to aggravate ongoing battles between the federal government and ranchers over water and property rights in drought-stricken areas.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service issued an order Monday listing the New Mexico meadow jumping mouse as endangered.

The tiny mouse lives along streams and in wet areas in parts of New Mexico, southern Colorado and eastern Arizona. Biologists say the biggest threats are grazing and water use and management.

Regional officials with the U.S. Forest Service have acknowledged they will have to put up fences or take other action to protect water sources for the mouse. Ranchers say that could force them to abandon their grazing allotments.

Officials say they will try to consider all options before they set up more fences, CBS affiliate KRQE reported.

The federal government has already installed metal fences and locked gates to keep cattle out of a small spring-fed stream in the mountains of southern New Mexico.

The move has enraged one rural county, where the sheriff has been ordered by the county commission to cut the locks. The U.S. attorney for the district of New Mexico was hoping to ease tensions enough to avoid an escalation like the armed standoff last month over grazing rights in Nevada.

Police warn of a scam in the area - June 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By JUSTIN MUSZYNSKI STAFF WRITER

BRISTOL Police are warning residents about a scam they said is going around the area right now.

A paving company out of New Britain, going under the name of Hot Top Paving, has been going door-to-door soliciting driveway paving jobs from residents, police said.

According to The Department of Consumer Protection, this company has lost its license to do business in the state.

Authorities said the business owner is operating an older model Chevrolet pick-up truck with HOT TOP PAVING on the side printed in black and yellow.

The individuals promise to do work, police said, then take the money and never return.

They are specifically targeting the elderly when canvassing neighborhoods.

If this vehicle is observed, residents are asked to contact the Bristol Police Department at (860) 584-3011.
