Hot trends for home remodeling - June 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Decisions, decisions. Whether you're building a brand-new home or pondering a kitchen makeover, there are dozens of big and small details to lose sleep over.

We've enlisted architects Marcy Schulte, Sarah Nettleton, Geoffrey Warner and John Vetter to share their perspectives on hot home trends and the most popular projects, sustainability and making the most of your budget.

    Kitchens

    Q What's hot in kitchens?

MS: Everyone wants an eat-in kitchen and a large working island because there are more social activities around food, wine and cooking. We often knock down walls and open up the kitchen to the family room or other spaces. We turned a separate kitchen and dining room in a 1980s builder home into one big room.

SN: Kitchens are the No. 1 remodeling project because it's the part of the house that feels the most dated and typically done in the style of the era the home was built. What people want today goes back to the farmhouse idea of the kitchen as the heart of the home -- with cooking on one side and a big table for seating on the other side. Now it's updated with a center island, easy pullout drawers and walk-in pantries. Today's kitchen fits more seamlessly aesthetically with the rest of the house.

GW: The party always happens in the kitchen, and people want it open to the rest of the house. Big center islands give you enough room to spread out, cook and work on a laptop. We use a lot of stock Ikea cabinets -- they're cost-effective, and people like the clean look. Granite is still popular because it's cheaper now. But a lot of people are attracted to salvaged marble -- it's softer and can stain, but they like the tactile qualities.

Deere World Headquarters building turns 50 - June 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

When former Deere & Co. Chairman William Hewitt envisioned a new administrative center more than a half century ago, he wanted a building that not only would honor the farm equipment maker's sturdy Midwestern roots but set the tone for the global company that Deere wouldevolve into.

This month, employees at what now is called John Deere World Headquarters in Moline, observe the 50th anniversary of the acclaimed architectural gem. Like the company itself, the building has stood the test of time and even some reinventions of space.

''We're very fortunate, this building is very adaptable to a change of the times," said Craig Mack, Deere's manager of general office facilities.

While the Cor-Ten steel building's exterior has changed very little in its five decades, its interior has had to accommodate the shifts in office functions and culture. Mack recalled how the company's computer once filled the entire ground floor in the East Office building, but today, updated infrastructure must power a computer on every desk. In 1964, the idea of teleconferencing was science fiction lore. But today, Deere employees around the globe meet face-to-face in a Telepresence Room in the West Office building.

Mack, who in 1979 joined Deere mid-career as an architect in the engineering department, sees his role as "maintaining the stewardship of the building'' while overseeing necessary modernizations.

''For the Quad-Cities, this was quite a facility 50 years ago," he said during a recent tour.

In the past six to seven years, the three-building complex has undergone a major overhaul with new energy-efficient windows, carpeting, LED lighting, Wi-Fi capabilities throughout, a telephone system upgrade and reconfigured work spaces.

"We're trying to be as green as we can be but still keep the image of the building," Mack said.

Under construction from 1961 to 1964, the headquarters was built to accommodate the company's growth and unite 900 employees from six separate Deere locations under a single roof. The staff and 250 vanloads of supplies and files moved in on April 17, 1964, but the official grand opening was held June 4-5 of that year.

With 400 guests on hand at the celebration, Deere unveiled themulti-million-dollar center. The event was described as "the greatest gathering of top-flight business personnel in Quad-City history," according to the Davenport Times-Democrat, a predecessor of the Quad-City Times.

Clubbing at the Ritz in Toronto - June 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Toronto Ritz-Carlton opened three years ago across from Roy Thomson Hall, and soon began racking up awards for its five-star, five-diamond AAA/CAA service.

Once I got a look at the spa, my corner suite and the Club lounge on the 20th floor, I started to think I had made too many plans that involved leaving the premises.

The Club level of accommodation is the Ritzs hotel within a hotel, an upgrade with the biggest perk being access to the lounge, where complimentary food is on offer all day. Which means theres a rotating selection of upscale nibblies and kid-friendly snacks laid out from early till late.

It starts with a breakfast buffet, which morphs into lunchtime sandwiches and salads, which progresses to snacks, then hors doeuvres and cocktails, and finally, at 8 p.m., desserts and cordials.

The Club bar is open all day, fully stocked with premium liquor, and the space is like a comfortable living room, with a nook for board games, a TV corner and a computer with printer.

Solo business travellers were there to grab a bite without the chore of eating out alone. Families passed through. For both kinds of travellers, the appeal is simple: A good bite on the go makes life that much easier no matter who you are and why youre in Toronto.

The Club lounge has a dazzling view of Lake Ontario and the CN Tower, which I admired over a glass of wine and bocconcini and cherry tomatoes shortly after check-in. Perfectly shaped macarons, carefully stacked in jars, were some of the best I have tasted.

My three nieces, who were the reason for my Toronto visit, loved the lounge most of all for its unlimited sugar rush: jars packed with chocolate bars, plates of cookies, a hot-chocolate machine, and a chocolate fondue.

They would have sprinted from one to the other had I not given them my stink eye and laid down the cardinal rule: Walk. Do. Not. Run.

A little boy having lunch a few tables away with his parents said it best: This is the life.
