Rally Falls Short for 'Crabs - June 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

June 12, 2014 - Florida State League (FSL) Charlotte Stone Crabs FORT MYERS, FL (June 11, 2014) - With no chance at winning the first half in the Florida State League's South Division, the Stone Crabs can strictly focus on player development before the second half begins next week. Wins and losses will be reset soon enough, so any victory is just an added bonus while Jared Sandberg and his staff can assess the present team as it is presently constructed. One night after getting shellacked by the Miracle 10-0 for their third straight defeat, the Stone Crabs nearly pulled off the comeback of the season in the second game of the series. However, four runs in the ninth wasn't enough, and a 7-6 loss sent the `Crabs to four games under .500 for the first time since April 28.

Hammond Stadium was playing like a bandbox on Wednesday night, and the hitters took advantage of the favorable wind blowing out right away. Austin Pruitt surrendered a one out double to Travis Harrison in the second before Stuart Turner banged a 3-1 pitch over the wall in left to put the Miracle ahead 2-0. After picking up just two measly singles in the first three innings against All-Star Jose Berrios, the Stone Crabs tied it up in the fourth. A leadoff walk to Leonardo Reginatto and strikeouts by Patrick Leonard and Kes Carter allowed Maxx Tissenbaum to crush his first home run of the year to right to tie the game at two.

The Miracle countered with a quick punch in the home fourth following Adam Brett Walker's leadoff single. Two pitches later it was designated hitter Mike Gonzales, who hit a moonshot deep to right for another two run blast and a 4-2 Miracle lead. Pruitt lasted five innings and didn't allow another run the rest of the night, and Kevin Brandt delivered two perfect frames in the sixth and seventh while racking up four strikeouts along the way.

Facing Nick Sawyer in the eighth, the Miracle didn't need to do much with the bats to add to the 4-2 lead. Three walks and a sacrifice bunt by Aderling Mejia loaded the bases with one out for Gonzales, who worked a walk for his third run batted in and a 5-2 lead. Four more pitches out of the zone to Harrison scored another run to make it 6-2 before Ryan Garton entered from the bullpen to get the final two outs, including an RBI groundout by Dalton Hicks that made it 7-2 heading into the ninth.

Leonard started the inning with a routine groundball to shortstop Jorge Polanco, who booted it for an error. A line single by Carter and a groundout to first by Tissenbaum put runners at second and third with one out. Jonathan Quionez then placed an infield single on the grass in front of first, and they were loaded up for Josh Sale. An RBI fielder's choice groundout brought in Leonard to make it 7-3 before Sale took second base on defensive indifference. A walk to Julian Ridings loaded the bases and allowed Tyler Goeddel to drive in a pair with a two run single underneath the glove of the second baseman Mejia. Representing the tying run, Goeddel stole second base, but Turner's throw from behind the plate skipped into center field, scoring Ridings to make it 7-6 and moving Goeddel to third as the tying run. Tyler Jones then put the positive feelings to rest by blowing a 2-2 fastball past Tommy Coyle to end the ballgame.

NOTES: The Stone Crabs are now 0-21 when trailing after the eighth inningall four runs in the ninth were unearned because of the Polanco errorPruitt (3-3) hadn't allowed a home run in his previous four starts, a span of 22.2 IPBrandt and Tissenbaum were both late additions to the South Division All-Star Teamthe `Crabs had just two baserunners from the fifth until the ninth, and neither runner advanced past firstthe loss marks just the third time in 11 games this month the Stone Crabs scored more than five runs.

The series wraps up at Hammond Stadium on Thursday night at 7:05 PM when Reinaldo Lopez (4-2, 3.39 ERA) looks to end the losing skid against Matt Tomshaw (6-1, 1.95 ERA). You can follow all the action by listening to the game on http://www.stonecrabsbaseball.com via TuneIn Radio, or tuning into 91.7 FM-WVIJ in the Port Charlotte area. Consumer Alert: Don't Sweat Summer Utility Bills - June 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

LITTLE ROCK (Arkansas Attorney General's Office) - As temperatures rise, so do utility bills for many Arkansans who rely on air conditioning to keep them cool during the hot summer months.

The cost of cooling a home is one of the single largest utility expenses. In Arkansas, a survey of residential electricity consumption determined that cooling a home accounted for about one-fourth of annual costs.

Fortunately, there are a number of ways that Arkansas consumers can stay cool and save money on their utility bills. Attorney General Dustin McDaniel issued this consumer alert today with advice on how Arkansans can lower utility bills during the hot summer months.

Its almost as difficult to handle the triple-digit utility bills as it is the triple-digit temperatures we experience during a typical Arkansas summer, McDaniel said. Obviously, utility costs will be higher than normal during periods of extreme heat, but there are some effective and inexpensive ways to save money and keep the house at a comfortable temperature, too.

Think about buying reflective window coatings to help keep sunlight from adding heat to the home, since more than 40 percent of the heat that builds up in a home enters through the windows.

Set the thermostat no lower than 78 degrees while at home. When away from home, set it at least five degrees warmer. (Consumers reduce cooling costs an average of 3 to 5 percent for every degree higher on the thermostat).

ALGONQUIN The community could have a say in the name of the new district office building in Community Unit School District 300.

At his first official board meeting on June 9, the districts new superintendent, Fred Heid, suggested the School Board consider naming the new district offices after a person instead of just calling the building the Central Office.

Heid, whose official title is chief executive officer until his superintendent credentials are validated by the state, said the district has plenty of time to consider possible names. While construction of the district administrative offices is underway, Assistant Superintendent for Operations Chuck Bumbales still is looking for work to be finished by the end of 2014.

Chuck right now is working aggressively to meet the timeline because he has promised me we will be in there by December sometime, Heid said.

Currently, two-thirds of the central office staff is working from unused space at Hampshire High Schools. The remaining third are scattered around the district. Once the building at Golden Eagle and Harnish drives is complete, all the central office staff will be housed under one roof.

Heid asked the board for direction as to whether the district should revisit the districts naming conventions before reaching out to district stakeholders for input.

The Benefits of a Home Addition - June 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Scott Murfey

Is your home almost perfect? Maybe it was perfect when you bought it, but its getting a little cramped since you got roped in by that infomercial and now own a home gym set. Or maybe your son or daughter unexpectedly moved back in with you after graduating from college, so you dont get to turn their bedroom into that coveted wine cellar after all. Of course, you could move, but do you really feel like packing, hiring movers and reorganizing everything? Maybe a home addition is the answer. Generally, a less expensive option than moving, home additions offer many benefits:

More space for stuff: Our homes never end up having enough space. After living somewhere for a while, its natural that we accumulate more photo albums, more appliances, and more electronics. But its not just that we accumulate more stuff; our lifestyles change. Sometimes our home becomes our office, or we develop new hobbies and require an art studio or a music room.

More space for family: Increasingly, our kids and our parents are moving back in with us. According to a recent study by the Pew Research Center, almost 40% of young adults live at home with their parents, and according to another study, 4.6 million elders moved in with their kids. You might not have planned for this when you bought your place. However, instead of uprooting completely or feeling cramped, you can look into adding an extra bedroom, and if the plumbing allows, it can include a bathroom.

More sunlight: Generally less expensive than other home additions, a sunroom has many benefits. Natural light is so important. Studies show that it improves our mood, it promotes healing, makes us smarter (a study showed that test scores were higher among students when their classes were illuminated by natural light) and makes us more productive (a study found programmers in offices with natural light spent more time at their computers than those in offices without windows). Sunrooms can also add natural light to surrounding rooms.

More luxury: If youre at that point in your life when you feel like you deserve a little more luxury, why not build that walk-in closet that youve always dreamed of or that luxury bathroom with the giant, gorgeous shower and his and her sinks?

If you are considering a home addition, its important to remember that a home addition that isnt designed and planned well can look awkward. It might not match the style or shape of the existing house. Its also important to make sure that all home additions adhere to San Diego building codes. If they dont, you will have to pay fines, and you may have to return the home to its original state.

At Murfey Construction, we are well-versed in great design principles and San Diego building codes and regulations. If you are considering a home addition, please visit us at http://MurfeyConstruction.com.

Border Demolition fined for night demolition work in Downtown El Paso (update) - June 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Demolition of a building at San Antonio and Mesa in Downtown is underway. It's one of five buildings River Oaks Properties is demolishing on a Downtown block for possible future development. Preservationists had tried to get the city to stop the demolitions because they said the buildings are historically important for El Paso. ( Rudy GutierrezEl Paso Times)

Border Demolition & Environmental Inc., the company hired by River Oaks Properties to demolish five Downtown buildings, was ordered to pay $1,700 by the city for violating its demolition permits, city officials said.

Demolition began Tuesday night on a building at the corner of San Antonio and Mesa, one of five buildings River Oaks is demolishing on a Downtown block for possible future development.

Border Demolition's city-issued permits require demolition work be done between 6 a.m.-10 p.m. But the city received video evidence that demolition went beyond 10 p.m., Tuesday, Javier Camacho, a spokesman for the city Development Department said Thursday.

Mathew McElroy, director of the city Development Department, said Friday that initial information that River Oaks was fined was wrong. And the money Border Demolition has to pay is not technically a fine, he said. It's money Border must pay for city costs associated with the permit violation, he said.

Border Demolition officials have indicated the company will comply with all demolition permit requirements, McElroy said.

River Oaks officials did not respond Thursday to requests for comments.

A building at 109 S. Mesa has been torn down, and demolition continued Thursday on the adjacent building at 218 E. San Antonio. Three other adjacent buildings on San Antonio remained standing Thursday.

Meanwhile, historic building preservationists have turned their attention from fighting the River Oaks' demolitions to trying to get City Council to declare a moratorium on future demolition of Downtown buildings until a preservation plan can be put together.

"Ideally we would like a moratorium on the demolition of buildings over 100 years old Downtown until the city can appoint an independent commission" of experts who could review the city's Downtown historic district boundaries and buildings outside that district and devise a preservation plan, said Max Grossman, vice chairman of the El Paso County Historical Commission, a County Commissioners Court appointed body, and an assistant professor of art history at UTEP.

Demolition of Bradleys Murphy terminal to begin - June 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

WINDSOR LOCKS The demolition of the old Murphy terminal at Bradley International Airport is scheduled to begin this summer and cost $7.2 million more than originally budgeted, Connecticut Airport Authority Executive Director Kevin Dillon told the authority at Mondays meeting.

It will start in August, and its on an 18-month timeline to complete the demolition, Dillon said. You should start to see sections of the building starting to come down by the end of the year.

The project first will need a few months of site remediation to remove hazardous asbestos and lead, he said. What will add almost $7 million to the project cost is removing recently discovered cancer-causing PCBs in window and door caulking. The project cost will now be $19.6 million, funded by airport revenues.
