There's a huge demand for mounted digital cameras which produce high resolution images. Some even have audio. In the event a home is burglarized, they can show the criminals going in and out of a home.

And having the crimes captured on video is a blessing for police at a time when there are staffing shortages.

"The biggest change for us has been the addition of video surveillance in homes," Belmont Police Capt. Pat Halloran said. "Previously we only saw them in businesses and stores."

The best seller at Hue and Cry Security Systems in San Carlos is a program called "Verified Response," which also alerts police.

When the camera detects motion in the home, it triggers the recording. The images are sent in real time to the company's monitoring station, where workers look for anything suspicious. If there is, Hue and Cry's dispatchers call police.

"They seem to come out faster and hopefully, they can capture the person so it doesn't happen again," spokesperson Natalie Miles said.

But that depends on how quickly officers get there.

Chances are most of the burglars will get away before police are able to respond. But now, there is at least one security company that's filling the gap.

Aclarity Systems has digital cameras at homes and businesses and the images are monitored 24 hours a day. If there's unusual movement, the computer sends out a red flag, but unlike other companies, they will dispatch a private security unit to investigate suspicious activity.

DIXON New road closures in Dixon next week will be for the Petunia Festival, not a result of the downtown streetscape project.

Peoria Avenue, from First Street to Third Street will remain closed. So will First Street, between Hennepin and Galena avenues; Ottawa Avenue, from First Street to Second Street; and the south side of First Street, from Galena to Crawford avenues.

Progress farther west on First Street, according to information from the engineering companies, will wait until after the Petunia Festival, which is July 2-6.

Construction on Peoria Avenue includes sidewalks, landscape areas, preparation for road paving, curb and gutter work, installation of underground electrical connections, and construction oflight pole bases.

Starting on Monday, River Street, from Peoria Avenue to Galena Avenue, will be closed for Petunia Festival setup. Beginning Tuesday, Hennepin Avenue will be closed from First Street to River Street.

In April, the Dixon City Council awarded a contract for the streetscape work to Fischer Excavating Inc., of Freeport, for nearly $5.8 million, a portion of which will be paid for by KSB Hospital for work to a parking lot off Ottawa Avenue.

The city also contracted Wendler Engineering Services Inc. and Willett, Hofmann & Associates, for a combined $321,000, to do engineering work and planning for the project, bringing the total streetscape cost to about $6.1 million.

No new closures next week in Dixon for streetscape work

City councilman, David Alvarez, in San Ysidro announcing the city approved funds for a long awaited sidewalk for the sudents of San Ysidro High.

The community of San Ysidro is celebrating albeit with some reservationsthe announcement of the securing of the final funding needed to complete a sidewalk that would connect San Ysidro with its high school.

The sidewalk would provide a safe way for San Ysidro High School students to walk to and from school. Currently, and since the school opened in 2002, students walk to school on a dirt path along a steep canyon, along a winding road.

San Diego City Council District 8 Councilmember David Alvarez made the announcement of the final funds at a press conference in San Ysidro on Wednesday, June 18th, where he was joined by community residents and leaders.

A sidewalk in this location is vital to the students that use this route to go to and from school, Alvarez said. The community has been advocating for the construction of this sidewalk for far too long. For the entire time I have been in office, this has been and continues to be one of my top priorities.

But this isnt the first time San Ysidro has heard this news. In the past, other District 8 representatives, from Ralph Inzunza to Ben Hueso have tried to build the sidewalk, according to Hector Espinoza, principal at San Ysidro High School.

This is the third or fourth time Ive heard this in 13 years, Espinoza said. Ive heard it before.

A safe pedestrian pathway for students to walk to school has been promised by San Diego city officials and area developers since the San Ysidro High School opened in 2002.

Espinoza said that the major difference is that this time, Alvarez is working with Mayor Kevin Faulconer to make this sidewalk a reality.

World Cup soccer players getting their kicks in Brazil are doing it on grass from Manitoba seeds.

And even if you didn't make it to Brazil, you can grow a similar lawn. The Manitoba blend has some tough Kentucky bluegrass mixed in for our harsh climate.

Canadian company Pickseed was plucked as the official grass seed supplier for this year's World Cup. The company provided Manitoba-grown perennial rye grass seeds for each of the World Cup's 12 stadiums.

Pickseed also provided seeds for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the 2012 UEFA European Championship in Ukraine and Poland.

"We have a World Cup blend we sell that is designed for soccer pitches and other playgrounds, which germinates quicker than regular grass," said Terry Scott, the western Canadian vice-president of DLF Pickseed.

Two garden vignettes at the Water Conservation Garden show a dramatic difference in water use. One has traditional turf; the other uses hardscape, low-water plants and a small lawn area.

Theres never been a better time to consider replacing traditional turf with a water-wise landscape.

Consider these factors:

The entire state is in the throes of a severe drought.

The cost of water continues to escalate; our water rates will rise another 15 percent by the end of 2015.

And, the good news: There currently are two programs that offer rebates for turf removal to San Diego County residents.

The drought cycles and rising water costs are nothing new, yet most of us have been reluctant to let go of our green expanses of lawn. Pam Meisner, education director at the Water Conservation Garden, is among conservationists who are working to change our perceptions.

San Diego doesnt look like an arid Mediterranean climate because we dont want it to, she says. We want it to look like Hawaii.

Meisners colleague, Clayton Tschudy, who is horticulture director at the garden, believes that a Mediterranean landscape can be just as beautiful. By choosing the right plants, for example, you can have blooms all year long.

You dont have to put cactus in your yard to have drought-tolerant plants, says Tschudy. We have all manner of plants that are adapted to our climate: beautiful, soft, flowy grasses; beautiful evergreen shrubs; shrubs with color; trees with color; deciduous trees that give you fall color; vines everything is possible.

Entire Front Yard a Beach

Dale and Kathleen Rhodes, with their and son Shelby Rhodes, 15, right, enjoy their 'Beach Front Yard.' The Lido Key residents used some 20 tons of sand to turn the entire front yard into a beach, complete with umbrella, shells, beach balls, colorful chairs and Jimmy Buffett music.

LIDO KEY - In a residential neighborhood off Lido Beach, the streets are named after presidents, but the yards run every which way.

There are grass yards and gravel yards. Mulch yards and paved yards. Brick yards and shell yards.

Then theres the sand box with a picket fence on Grant Drive.

Its more like a sand dune, with a pair of palms and a small mound supporting beach chairs and a colorful umbrella. Stepping stones lead to a seashell corner. Plastic pails and inflatable beach balls complete the scene.

People come by and go, Youve got to be kidding me, says Dale Rhodes. Every day, somebody takes a picture of this. Every day.

Rhodes laughs. People are supposed to get a kick out of his yard. That was the whole idea four years ago.

I told my wife, I can see it, I can see it in my head, he says. Shes like, You want to do what?
