Brooklyn Borough President Bowls At Bowling Alley That Ebola Patient Visited - October 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    TRI-STATE NEWS HEADLINES

From our newsroom to your inbox weekday mornings at 9AM.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) Just days after the first Ebola patient was diagnosed in New York City, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams bowled the first frames at the Williamsburg bowling alley where the patient was said to have visited a day before he became ill.

The Gutterbowling alley reopened to the public Saturday afternoon following a thorough cleaning.

I was extremely comfortable and enjoyed myself, Adams told WCBS 880. I did not have the best bowling game, but at the same time I wanted Brooklynites to see that if the borough president was comfortable in going to The Gutter bowling lanes then theres no reason to be afraid.

EXTRA: More On Ebola From The CDC

Owner Todd Powers brought in a special cleaning firm even though the health department said that wasnt necessary, 1010 WINS Roger Stern reported.

The symbolism of bowling at The Gutter is sending a message to all Brooklynites that The Gutter is open and a safe place to continue to use recreationally, Adams said.

Many people who spoke with Stern said they would still go to The Gutter despite the recent events.

Sure theres a little bit of heightened sense of hesitation, but I still think Id do it, said Paul.

Biohazard scrubbing begins at places visited by Ebola doctor - October 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The Gutter will soon be the cleanest place in New York.

A biohazard company descended Friday night on the Brooklyn bowling alley where Ebola-afflicted doctor Craig Spencer played a few frames to rid the place of any trace of the deadly disease.

The hipster hot spots decontamination is being done by Bio-Recover Corp., which also handled the cleanup job at Spencers Harlem apartment.

The company promised a top-to-bottom cleanup, from the holes in the bowling balls to the light switches.

The first step is to use a fogging machine to circulate disinfectant throughout the facility.

Workers must focus particularly on the bowling balls. Traces of the virus could remain in a finger hole, and be transferred to another players face.

Of course, you go inside the ball, said Keith Capolino, who is president of Bio-One, another biohazard cleanup company.

Its the biggest risk of infection. We would spend the most time in those areas.

Cleaning the bathrooms and any areas where food and drinks are served would also be labor-intensive, said Capolino.

Porous objects, like bowling shoes, could be discarded to save time, or could be manually cleaned.

Former Island Transit chief getting $106,000 payout - October 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Reports by the Washington State Auditors Office puts blame for financial problems at Island Transit squarely at the feet of its five-member board of directors.

But the real bombshell concerns Martha Rose, the former director, who took vacation without deducting it from her vacation balance. She will receive $106,000 in a severance package, including $88,000 in unused vacation.

Oak Harbor Mayor Scott Dudley, whos back on the board, said the vacation payout amounts to theft and hes seeking an injunction to prevent Rose from being paid.

A team from the state Auditors Office announced three official findings in the exit conference Friday morning largely attributable to lack to oversight. No misappropriation of public funds were identified, they emphasized.

Cause of the current financial crisis, which led to service cuts and layoff, was poor monitoring of finances by the the board, one report states.

The audits identified $100,000 in questionable costs associated with a federal grant including the construction of gazebos which could have financial consequences.

Noncompliance with the grant requirements may require the transit authority to return all or a portion of this money to the grantor, audit supervisor Jenny Lofton said.

The accountability audit largely focused on Rose. She received regular raises without board approval; her performance wasnt reviewed since 1996; she took vacation without deducting it; and she claimed to go on two-week conferences when flight records show she was only gone for four or five days, according to a draft audit report.

The board approved a severance agreement with Rose following an executive session Oct. 17. She will get two months salary about $18,0000 plus $88,000 for unused vacation, per her contract, said Bob Clay, chairman of the transit board and Coupeville councilman.

Clay said problems concerning Rose were the result of poor record keeping, but nothing nefarious.

Former Island Transit chief gave herself raises, audit revealed - October 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Reports by the Washington State Auditors Office lays the blame for financial problems at Island Transit squarely at the feet of the five-member board.

But the real bombshell concerns Martha Rose, the former director, who took vacation without deducting it from her vacation balance, but will receive $116,000 in a severance package that included $88,000 for her unused vacation balance.

A team from the Washington State Auditors Office announced three official findings in the exit conference Friday morning largely attributable to lack of oversight. No misappropriation of public funds were identified, they emphasized.

The cause of the current financial crisis, which led to service cuts and layoffs of 21 workers, was poor monitoring of finances by the board, one report states.

The audits also identified $100,000 in questionable costs associated with a federal grant including the construction of gazebos which could have financial consequences.

Noncompliance with the grant requirements may require the transit authority to return all or a portion of this money to the grantor, Audit Supervisor Jenny Lofton said.

Rose received regular raises without board approval; her performance hasnt been reviewed since 1996; she took leave without deducting it from her leave or vacation balance; and she claimed to go on two-week conferences when flight records showed she was only gone for four or five days, according to a draft audit report.

Board members approved a severance agreement with Rose following an executive session, Oct. 17. She received two-months salary, totaling about $18,0000, plus $88,000 for her vacation balance, per her contract, according to Bob Clay, chairman of the transit board and a Coupeville councilman.

Clay said the problems concerning Rose were the result of poor record keeping, but nothing nefarious.

I dont believe Martha stole time or anything else that didnt belong to her, he said, adding that she had much more leave on the books than would have been allowed to be paid to her under the separation agreement.

Coco Martins wish for his birthday is another teleserye - October 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

No special someone.

Happy birthday Coco from all of us here in Push.com.ph.

Theater Review: South of Broadways Fences features some powerful performances - October 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

One might wonder if playwright August Wilsons Fences written in the 1980s and set primarily in the America of the 1950s is still relevant. One neednt wonder for long, however; it is, and it still packs an emotional punch as well.

One of 10 plays that together form Wilsons Pittsburgh Cycle (or, more alliteratively, his Century Cycle), Fences has as its focus the lives of the Maxsons, a working-class African-American family dealing with a country in transition.

The issue of race looms large, as do the changing roles of the different members of the household. Segregation is addressed directly, as the characters discuss the preferential treatment given to whites in areas as disparate as professional baseball and employee work assignments in the local sanitation department. Gender relations and family dynamics are also explored. But as central to the plays success as the overarching societal commentary are the more personal conflicts that fill the stage and inform the mostly excellent performances of the cast members.

Henry Clay Middleton deftly handles the lead role, patriarch Troy, with gravity and forcefulness. Even in his first scene when he's joking with longtime friend Bono (a confidently likable Jay DeVon Johnson) after clocking out on payday, Middleton has an underlying intensity that is never fully absent. As the audience watches Troy gradually reveal himself to be much deeper, and more troubled, than the opening scene would initially suggest, it becomes clear Fences is a story about someone whos haunted by choices hes made in the past, and struggling among the inequalities of mid-century America and the mistakes he continues to make as he ages. Central to his internal conflict, too, is the sense that he recognizes his faults, but is prevented by his pride from acknowledging them to those closest to him. Middletons performance is riveting.

As his wife, Rose, Teresa Wallace holds her own. The two mostly flirt and bicker with one another in the first act, and there is an easy rapport between the two. Wallace does a wonderful job of hinting at the lack of fulfillment that plagues her in her role as the dutiful wife. As the second act develops and she is comes into explicit conflict with Troy, nuance is mostly jettisoned in favor of icy condemnation and resentment. When she goes toe-to-toe with Troy, the confrontation is powerful and effective.

While the older cast members are all very impressive, the younger actors deliver performances that are a bit more uneven. Maurice J. McPherson as Lyons, Troys eldest son from an earlier life, is charming enough for the majority of the play, but misses a few opportunities to flesh the character out. Robert J. Townsend as Cory, Troy and Roses teenaged son, is initially unconvincing but does an admirable job of confronting Middleton in the later scenes. He ultimately shows a lot of promise.

The set design is effective, crisp, and unfussy it consists of only a single location, the Maxsons' front yard, where the titular fence, which reflects the familys modest aspirations of stability, is slowly being constructed. The sound and lighting design are minimal, but could stand to be tightened up a bit as a phone kept ringing once it had been answered, and lights went up early one time before a quick adjustment was made. The costumes are generally appropriate to the period, although a few items were clearly more contemporary and some of them were a poor fit. But this is probably due as much to budgetary limitations as anything else.

Ultimately, Fences is successful primarily because of the powerful lead acting and strong source material.Race identity, equality of opportunity, gender relations, kids pushing back against their parents values though the specifics may have changed, these issues are, and will most likely continue to be, important ones for countless Americans.

Committee seeks county funding to pave roadway in Laurel Run Park - October 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Home | Back

October 24th, 2014 6:45 am by Jeff Bobo

CHURCH HILL Laurel Run Park gives hikers access to some challenging wilderness trails, but the road leading into the park has become almost as rugged as the trails and an adventure to traverse in itself.

That's a problem Hawkins County leaders would like to deal with sooner rather than later because the worse the road conditions become, the more expensive the road will be to repair.

On Tuesday the Hawkins County Commission's Parks Committee voted unanimously to ask the Budget Committee if it would consider using reserves from the county general fund to pave the park's internal roadway.

Parks Committee members Joe McLain and Glenda Davis both sit on the Budget Committee. They agreed to raise the issue at the next Budget Committee meeting, scheduled for Nov. 17.

The area proposed for paving is from the park entrance gate to the area near the public restrooms, which is basically the same roadway inside the park that's currently paved, and doesn't include gravel parking areas.

Although the park is county owned, the roadway inside the gate isn't a county road. Legally it's treated like a private driveway. That means the road isn't maintained by the county highway department as part of the county road system.

W.L. Construction is the Hawkins County Highway Department's low bidder for contracted paving projects.

Hawkins County facilities manager Alana Roberts told the committee Tuesday she asked highway superintendent Lowell Bean to obtain an estimate from W.L. Construction for paving the park's internal road. The estimate came back at $55,900 for 2-inch-thick pavement and $41,925 for 1.5 inches thick.
