Impressive 'cluster' at Paruna - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

FROM the nearby highway, it is impossible to miss the impressive cluster of farm sheds on Andrew and Annette Cass' Paruna property.

The Cass family has invested heavily in farm infrastructure in the past 20 years, a move Mr Cass says has well and truly paid off.

Most sheds, including three bulk grain sheds, a large machinery shed and a chemical storage shed, have been built by Grant Sheds since 1998.

While the sheds are conveniently built near the family's house and close together, Mr Cass planned their location to allow trucks and large machinery plenty of room to manoeuvre.

"The sheds were built close to the homestead, keeping in mind that we didn't want the sheds to clutter close to the homestead," he said.

"It was important that we had a bit of distance between the homestead lifestyle and work.

"The sheds grew with the size of the farm. During the time we built the sheds we were obtaining more land, which meant more machinery, more grain storage and so on. The sheds were all built in response to a need at the time.

"The location of all the sheds in one cluster is good it's much easier than having machinery stored on other parts of the farm. It's also easier for contractors or machinery agents to come and service the machinery if it's all in one spot.

"We've also put rubble all around the sheds, and it's been levelled and rolled so that it's virtually all-weather. It makes it much easier for grain trucks, as they can turn easily and won't get bogged, plus it's good for the airbag scales."

Mr Cass said the grain sheds had revolutionised the way he marketed his grain. The three structures were built progressively, starting with a 12-metre by 36m 1000-tonne shed.

CSIRO sheds light on new Antarctic research ship's power problems - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A senior CSIRO bureaucrat has explained more details about a power-supply issue that has dogged its new multi-million dollar research ship, the RV Investigator.

Last month the ABC revealed the RV Investigator was unable to access shore power in Hobart and was having to generate power from the ship's engines while in dock.

The ship had to be moved from its home berth at the CSIRO's dock at Princes Wharf because residents in nearby Battery Point and Salamanca had complained about the noise the engines were making.

Dr Andrew Johnson, executive director of environment at the CSIRO, today told the Economics Legislation Committee the power issue stemmed from power source differences between Australia and Singapore, where the ship was built.

"Australia has a particular set of specifications for the way in which it supplies its power to all consumers, not just to those in the maritime industry," Dr Johnson said.

"We made very clear to the contractor about what the onshore power requirements were as part of our statement of functional specifications.

"Whilst the vessel was in the shipyard in Singapore there was a different set of power specifications there and we've been in active discussions with the contractor for some time now about ensuring the power supply that the vessel can use in an ongoing basis is compatible with Australian power conditions."

The contract to build the $120 million vessel was let to joint Australian and Canadian companies TeeKay Australia and RALion who then partnered with Singapore shipyard Sembawang Pte Ltd.

The ship arrived in Hobart 11 months behind schedule

The Investigator replaced the previous research ship, the Southern Surveyor.

Creekside school addition plans progressing - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SPEARFISH Plans on the Creekside Elementary School addition are moving forward, and school officials may be ready to send the project to bid as soon as the first week of December.

Jason Roberdeau, with Williams and Associates, the firm designing the additional space, updated the Spearfish School Board members on Oct. 11 of the progress.

Two wings of the school, on the north and south, will have two classrooms and one specials room each. Additionally, a conference room will be included.

Architects estimated the construction and related fees will cost around $1.25 million and another $250,000 or so in soft costs such as furnishing the four classrooms and two specials rooms. The board members approved a plan in September for $1.5 million in financing needed for the addition. The financing will be retired in December 2019.

Current plans show the drawings to be complete in November. And the bid is expected to be as soon as Dec. 4.

The school board is expected to then accept or reject the bids at its meeting on Dec. 8 or Jan. 12, 2015. If a bid is accepted on Dec. 8, construction may start during Christmas break.

The construction crews are to keep the impact to students to a minimum.

Creekside Elementary School was completed in 2011 with what school officials and designers thought would be plenty of room. That extra space was filled in two years. Currently there are eight sections of third grade and seven each of fourth and fifth grade. To add an eighth section of third grade, school officials turned a special education room into a traditional classroom.

Next school year there will likely be a need for a ninth section of third grade and perhaps a 10th section if numbers remain consistent for the 2016-2017 school year.

There are currently seven traditional classrooms in each of the three wings of the school.

Light bulb moment - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

How you light a room is - perhaps surprisingly - one of the most important factors of a decor scheme.

"Consider all the different levels of lighting in the room, from the ceiling lights and pendants, to uplighters and occasional lamps," urges Josephine Bennett, head of home design at Laura Ashley. "All these aspects create different moods, which can be interchangeable throughout the day and night. Large, statement table lamps create a real focal point in the room, and provide an intimate light in the evening."

    TOP TRENDS

The great thing about lighting is you can tune into the latest looks without spending a fortune. Obviously, a crystal chandelier or standout floor piece might make a dent in your savings, but a simple shade or statement table lamp can give a room a whole new look - and give you change from a 20 note.

Copper is a big highlight this season, and matches the autumnal palette perfectly.

"Contemporary copper lighting adds a stylish finishing touch to any decor," says Rachel Small, Sainsbury's home living buying manager. "Giving off a burnished glow, copper pendants create a dramatic centrepiece for an ambient dining setting, while copper table lamps enhance any living space, bringing a subtle metallic accent."

Alicia Kaper, head of curation at Joss & Main, completely agrees: "With the clocks going back, one of the most effective ways to bring added ambience to your home is through well-chosen lighting. Copper continues to reign supreme as 'the' metal of the moment, but to get a kick-start on another key material story, look out for lighting made from weathered woods, which form the basis of the season's modern rustic look."

Of course, stunning, ornate styles are never going to go out of fashion and always create an impact, and even light bulbs are beautiful now.

"Bulbs are no longer boring," asserts Diane Simpson, lighting buyer at John Lewis. "Calex bulbs look striking with their carbon filaments and can be hung from plain or coloured cord to provide a retro feel to your home. Lee Broom's range of UK-made crystal bulbs provide a delicate and decorative alternative, while Plumen have managed to make low energy light bulbs look great."

In Japan, Fukushima residents are frustrated but resigned - October 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

HISANOHAMA, JAPAN An air of permanence has settled over the supposedly temporary Seabreeze shopping arcade.

The Karasuya restaurant, serving big bowls of steaming noodle soup at the entrance to the arcade, is well established as a lunch spot for construction workers and a snack-and-homework joint for children from the neighboring school.

Striped poles twirl outside the barber shop, where retro chairs and basins await the next customer.

Between the two rows of prefabricated buildings that make up the arcade, too far inland to get much of the salty wind, snowman lights hang cheerfully above park benches. Tables offer instant coffee and photographic reminders of the earthquake and tsunami that devastated this area, part of Iwaki city on the Fukushima coast, on March 11, 2011.

There is nothing we can do but wait, but still, its frustrating, said Takami Endo, who runs the restaurant with her husband, Yoshiyasu Endo.

Fukushima prefecture, the third largest in Japan, will hold elections for governor on Sunday, the first since the disaster. The main issue in the race is reconstruction, which remains painfully slow.

About 90,000 people in three coastal prefectures still live in temporary housing complexes that almost make trailer parks look luxurious.

The Endos restaurant and home and the other stores occupying the sad little prefabs of the Seabreeze arcade were a block or so from the seafront in 2011. But they were wiped out by the tsunami, which also precipitated a triple meltdown at the nearby Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Now the Endos live in public housing 15miles away, still dreaming of the day they can return to the location where Yoshiyasu Endos family operated the restaurant for about 50years.

My husband says we will go back, even if there is no one living there to come to our restaurant, Takami Endo said.
