Replace A Section Of Damaged, Cracked, Or Broken Vinyl Siding - October 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Even though the house was fairly new, the original builder did not save any scraps of siding, nor did he leave any indication of what manufacturer made the siding. This is a very common scenario with houses built on speculation... no spare parts and no info.

Vinyl siding is surprisingly easy to remove. I would dare to say that I could "undo" the siding on a 1500 square foot house in a day, two at most. Once the top-most piece has been removed to expose the nailing strip of the section below, it's just a matter of pulling nails.

Of course, the lip in question belongs to the siding panel above the section being replaced, as this upper panel covers the nails of the target section.

This notch makes it easy to insert the siding removal tool.

IG reports hundreds of housing code violations on US bases in S. Korea - October 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SEOUL, South Korea An Inspector Generals report has cited hundreds of potentially dangerous housing code violations, ranging from missing sprinkler systems to exposed copper wiring, in U.S. military housing in South Korea, although only 11 were considered serious.

Most of the violations were related to inadequate upkeep of housing facilities, according to the Oct. 28 report, which found that housing visits and inspections were not being conducted in accordance with established instructions and procedures.

Twelve percent of the occupied buildings at 13 U.S. Forces Korea military installations ranging from family housing to barracks and dormitories for unaccompanied servicemembers were reviewed during the IGs March 10 to April 24 inspections. The checks found 646 deficiencies in 277 units, mechanical rooms and common areas.

The 11 critical deficiencies included an out-of-service fire alarm system at U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan, which left the occupants of one building with no means of fire detection. Furnaces in two other buildings at the Seoul base were leaking heating oil onto an electric blower motor, posing a fire hazard.

At Camp Jackson, one building was not electrically grounded according to code, posing the possibility of electrocution. Four buildings at Camp Bonifas lacked carbon monoxide alarms.

An improperly bonded conductor at Camp Stanley posed a fire, shock and electrocution risk, and four buildings lacked carbon monoxide alarms.

Camp Humphreys had three fire or electrocution risks, including a building that was not grounded per code and an extension drop cord in another that was improperly wired. Energized copper wire was exposed in an elevator equipment room.

The 11 violations were deemed critical enough to require immediate attention; all have been corrected since the spring inspections or were expected to be completed last summer, according to correspondence from installation officials included in the IG report.

The health and safety of our service members and their families in Korea is a top priority, USFK said in an email. As a result, the affected service components have taken and continue to take corrective action.

Overall, the IG inspection found poor record keeping and overworked housing workers.

Superheroes wash windows for sick kids at Texas Children's Hospital - October 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    HOUSTON -

A team of superheroes helped sick kids get into the Halloween spirit Thursday morning as they washed windows at Texas Children's Hospital West campus.

Spider-Man, Batman, Captain America and Superman rappelled down the front of the hospital washing windows as patients watched from their rooms with excitement.

Gage was just one of many children who got to see their favorite superheroes like Captain America.

Gage is also dressing up as Captain America for Halloween, so he couldn't be happier with Thursday's visitors.

The employees of Texas Window Cleaning dressed up as Batman, Captain America, Spider-Man and Superman.

"I thought it was cool. And that my favorite superhero was Batman," said Alexis.

"That was cool for them to see them," Jaco Buentello said.

These patients and their families get to forget about IVs and medications and focus on Halloween and superheroes.

"A little distraction goes a long way," said David Holzen with Texas Children's Hospital. "They do this for the kids, this is one of the great events that go on at Texas Children's Hospital."

In the United States the Consumer Product Safety Commission said, Reports of falls from ladders while stringing lights and hanging decorations and other holiday-related injuries are increasing. The report went on to state that During November and December 2010, CPSC estimates that more than 13,000 people were treated in emergency departments nationwide due to injuries involving holiday decorations.

Sometimes these incidents might result in a couple of bruises or scratches, but in other cases injuries may be much more serious and include broken bones, fractures or worse.

Why take the risk of hurting your back shovelling snow or climbing a ladder to hang lights when Men In Kilts can help? Call 1-800-777-5458 for a free estimate in minutes or to book service before the schedules fill up.

Electric Water Heater Installation – YouTube - October 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Learn how to install an electric water heater with these step by step instructions. To install an electric water heater, you will need common plumbing tools, screwdrivers, a circuit tester or voltmeter, and pipe joint compound. If you have copper pipes, installation kits are available.

Make sure electrical power is off. Check the circuit for power. Let the hot water run until cool. Drain the water heater. Disconnect the electrical wires. Remove the discharge pipe. Connect hot and cold lines to the correct fittings. If soldering, solder the pipe to an adapter first, then connect the adapter to the water heater using pipe joint compound. Add a thermal expansion tank to the cold water line.

Attach the discharge pipe to the temperature and pressure release valve. Never cap or plug the discharge pipe.Turn the cold water supply valve on and fill the tank. Open the hot water faucet and let the hot water run full for 3 minutes. Check the water pressure. Check for leaks. Check the wiring. Connect the power wires. Connect the ground wire to the green ground screw.

    Thursday, October 30, 2014 9:13 PM EDT

    Special to the Herald

NEW BRITAIN The police department is asking city businesses and residents to leave outside lights on this evening to deter vandalism and increase safety for trick-or-treaters. The police will have extra personnel working tonight to further assist in safety and to promptly arrest persons who engage in criminal activity.

Trick-or-treating at organized events, such as the Halloween Safe Zone in downtown New Britain, is strongly encouraged. Parents are always requested to accompany their children while trick-or-treating. It is recommended that all trick-or-treating be concluded by 8 p.m.

Motorists, parents and children should be aware of the following safety guidelines:

/Motorists should obey all traffic laws.

/ Drive with caution in residential neighborhoods.

/ Be alert for children running out in traffic whose vision may be obscured by masks.

/ Use extreme caution when entering or exiting driveways.

/ Drivers must not wear any masks or wear any costume that impairs their vision or impairs their ability to operate a motor vehicle.
