Architect Emmanuel Manny Miana makes his presentation in the World Architectural Festival in Singapore By Margarita L. Chan |Philippine Daily Inquirer
ARCHITECT Emmanuel MannyMiana giving his 10-minute presentation to a three-member jury
PIONEERING Philippine team at the WAF 2014 in Singapore: Emmanuel Miana and Bienvenido Tantoco Jr.
SINGAPOREFor the first time, a Filipino is on the shortlist of this years World Architectural Festival (WAF), the worlds largest annual gathering of architects and interior designers.
I felt very fortunate to be able to share my work with the global architecture and design community, said Emmanuel Manny Miana after giving a truly laudable presentation of Villa Marina, the Tantoco familys home in Santa Elena, Laguna.
The suburban home was inspired by the bahay-na-bato (stone house) from the Philippines Spanish colonial past.
Miana, whose work is well-regarded in the country, received a rousing round of applause for his presentation before a packed audience and WAFs three-member panel of international judges.
His family and some colleagues flew to Singapore to give him moral support, including his team from Emmanuel A. Miana and Associates (Eama) as well as John Samonte, Jorge Yulo, Christian Guerrero, Anthony Nazareno, Alfred Wieneke, Ariston Tan, Ed Calma, Bong Recio, Meloy Casas, Paolo Alcazaren and Elizabeth Reyes.
Villa Marina truly celebrates the Filipino design aesthetic as reflected in its architecture, interiors and landscape design, even in its lighting. This project integrated technology with context, climate and cultural diversity, infusing the Filipino vernacular with contemporary vision and global appeal, Miana said of his presentation.

The 46-unit multi-family Marion Villas apartment complex at 1600 Marion St. is taking shape and will offer affordable housing to low-income senior citizens aged 55 and older once it is completed. The senior living community will include a 1,200 square-foot community center and 3,000 square feet of commercial/retail space. The complex is being developed by the Fresno Housing Authority. Kingsburgs Economic Development Committee is recruiting businesses to fill retail space which specifically appeal to seniors as seniors will live above the commercial space, and/or to parents of young children as a preschool and a kindergarten school are nearby.
Meanwhile construction has kicked off for a new housing development known as Kings Crossing Estates at Kamm and Academy avenues. Signs advise citizens to be prepared for road closures at that intersection and to keep children out of the construction zone.

The European-designed lunar shelter is printed with rubble and binding agent.

Concrete printing in 3D has a future in the near term, with commercial applications coming in a couple of years, predict researchers in the U.K.
Richard Buswell, senior lecturer in building-services engineering at Loughborough University, spent four years on a team developing a computer-controlled process for producing complicated concrete elements not possible by traditional means. The $2-million project, completed in 2011, produced a series of 1-meter-sq, curved panels with internal voids, made with high-strength mortar extruded and placed with a three-axis frame.
Buswell's team now aims to increase production by mounting the printer head on a seven-axis robotic arm. They are seeking a commercial industrial partner, he says.
Co-researcher and architectural firm Foster + Partners, London, has studied 3D printing for a decade, says associate director Xavier de Kestelier. He represented Foster on a European Space Agency project, completed last year, designing a shelter for lunar travellers. It comprises a load-bearing dome of impact-resistant cellular concrete.
The ESA team printed a 3,300-lb test block of figured concrete using "D-Shape" technology, owned by Dinitech S.p.A., Pisa, Italy.
In lunar use, printers would place layers of regoliththe dust and broken rock on the moon's surfaceon an inflatable formwork while injecting it with a liquid binder of undisclosed composition. De Kestelier now wants to bring the technology "back to Earth." Like Buswell, he also believes 3D concrete printing will soon find commercial uses.

Officials and Williams family members celebrated the exterior restoration of the Chesser-Williams House on Tuesday. (Staff photo: Kristi Reed)
County officials, representatives of the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center and Williams family members were on hand Tuesday afternoon to celebrate the completion of the exterior restoration of the historic Chesser-Williams House.
The home, which dates to the mid-1800s, was relocated to the Gwinnett Environmental and Heritage Center in Buford in 2012. One of the oldest surviving homes in Gwinnett County, it is decorated inside and out with folk art paintings believed to have been the work of an itinerant German artist who painted in exchange for room and board during his travels from North Carolina to Texas in the late 1800s. Only seven other structures are known to have intact examples of the artists work.
The Oct. 21 ribbon-cutting marked the completion of months of restoration work involving extensive research and the meticulous repainting of the homes exterior.
This is just the very beginning of great things to come, GEHC Foundation Chairman Mike McGarity said.
The Chesser-Williams House, he added, will be a valuable educational opportunity for residents.
This is going to be a great facility to educate children, to educate families, as to what Gwinnett County was like a long time ago, McGarity said.
Commission Chairwoman Charlotte Nash thanked members of the Williams family for working with the county to ensure the home was preserved. Describing it as one of Gwinnetts hidden treasures, Nash said making the home available to the public and sharing its history is both a responsibility and pleasure for the county.
It is our honor to be able to have it here at the Environmental and Heritage Center, she said.
Restoration work on the interior of the home is currently underway. GEHC Director Steve Cannon said the Chesser-Williams House is expected to be open to the public in the spring of 2015. The home will be the centerpiece of a living history museum which will also feature a barn, outhouse, chicken coop, paddock, shed and vegetable garden.
