Friday, October 17, 2014, by Rachel B. Doyle Image via Haworth Tompkins Architects
Last night the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) awarded Britain's most prestigious architecture award, the Stirling Prize, to the Everyman Theater in Liverpool, a project by Haworth Tompkins Architects with enough circa-2004 industrial stylishness to beat out projects by Zaha Hadid and Renzo Piano. The building, described by the Guardian as resembling "a redbrick ocean liner," has a large-scale work of public art serving as its faade; there are 105 life-size portraits of contemporary Liverpool residents mounted on moveable metal sunshades above the entrance. Despite the fact that it kind of looks like an H&M subway advertisement (in a cool way?), the $45M theater edged out London's Shard by starchitect Renzo Piano and the Olympic Aquatics Center by swoop savant Zaha Hadid.
According to the theater's artistic director, who spoke to the Guardian, the architects were tasked with creating a building that "shouldn't feel too posh," with the "warmth, earthiness and democratic humanity" of the structure it was replacing. The building was originally an old chapel (the bricks for the new auditorium were recycled from it) and was converted into a theater in the '60s.
"Many people expressed the view that, if we messed this up, we needn't bother coming back to the city," architect Steve Tompkins told the Guardian. He needn't have worried. Turns out, the project was something of a crowd favorite: a Guardian poll showed that 58 percent of voters thought Everyman Theater should win the award. (Renzo Piano's Shard is the only building Idris Elba loves in all of London, though only four percent of respondents felt it should win. Burn.)

LAS CRUCES >> Some things were just built to last. The old Armijo House, the future home of the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce, is testament to that.
Today, scaffolding surrounds three sides of the two-story adobe house on Lohman Avenue, just off South Main Street. A crew with Pat Taylor Inc. a Mesilla company that specializes in historic preservation, is doing painstaking work to make the building's old adobe walls new again. Specialized carpenters are refurbishing the old wooden porch around the front and east side of the house. In simple terms, it's called stabilization work, but there are a lot of meticulous tasks now underway at the house that historians believe that Nestor Armijo originally built in the 1860s.
Robin Zielinski Sunj-News Marcos Talache, right, and Eric Calbert, Pat Taylor Inc. construction workers, continue restoration work at the Nestor Armijo House. More than 700,000 in renovations and restoration will be done to the building that is now owned by the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce. The building will become the chamber's new offices.
The Chamber of Commerce, which has been deeded the historic house, will spend more than $700,000 to bring the Las Cruces icon back to life.
"Without a doubt, there was a lot of craftsmanship that went into building this house," Taylor said.
Indeed, the Amador Hotel is a Las Cruces icon. It, too, was built about the same time as the Armijo House. Southern New Mexico historians agree both buildings are clearly links to the city's rich history.
"It's our sense of place," said Eric Liefeld, executive director of Mesilla Valley Preservation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the architectural legacy of buildings in Las Cruces and nearby Doa Ana County communities. "It's good to see some things have survived."
Liefeld has been directly, and indirectly involved in restoration of the Armijo House. Several years ago, when city employees were cleaning out a storage facility, they came across remnants of a window. Not knowing where the window came from, and impressed with its design, Liefeld quickly agreed to take pieces of the old window off the city's hands.

Tuwhare's legacy comes home -

HoneTuwhare's legacy arrives home today, with New Zealand's third Koha for the Crib in Dunedin tonight.
Hone Tuwhare's crib at South Otago coastal village Kaka Pt was a sanctuary for the famous Maori writer and former University of Otago Robert Burns Fellow.
Now the property is to be transformed in to lasting legacy for writers and artists around the country, Hone Tuwhare Charitable Trust chairman Noel Waite said.
The trust embarked on a series of Koha for the crib in 2011, the first events in Auckland and then in Wellington, to raise money for the crib's restoration and to build a new writers' residency and studio at the site.
Dunedin will host the third event tonight, Saturday, October 18 at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum.
"Hone considered Dunedin to be his intellectual home," Waite said, "and a hub for sharing his creative passion with fellow writers and artists."
Koha for the Crib will include performances by musicians Don McGlashan, Rio Hemopo, Graham Downes, Martin Phillipps, David Kilgour, and Ciaran McMeekin. Poets Emma Neale, Majella Cullinane, Sue Wooton and Peter Olds will also give readings of poetry.
"Hone's love of food will be celebrated through chef Scott Murray who has designed the menu based on local kai that will knock the socks of guests," Waite said.
One of the highlights of the night, however, would be a charity art auction.Among items going under the hammer are especially-designed limited edition printsfeaturing Tuwharepoemsin the writer's own handwriting as well as a limited edition box set of The Chills featuring art work by Shane Cotton. Well-known Dunedin art connoisseur Marshall Siefert is auctioneer.
The specially-designed limited edition posters of Hone Tuwhare's poems are among items going under the hammer.

After news broke of the attorney generals resignation, journalists got ahead of themselves
Justice Attorney General Eric Holder is set to resign from his post after six years in the Obama administration (AP Photo/Susan Walsh)
Hours before Attorney General Eric Holder announced his resignation Thursday afternoon, speculation among reporters about his replacement had already hit a fever pitch. A number of news outlets simply listed the possibilities, while still more began ranking them in earnest, all with little or no sourcing.
NPRbroke news of Holders announcement at 10:40 am, citing two anonymous sources saying that a leading candidate [to replace him] is Solicitor General Don Verrilli, the administrations top representative to the Supreme Court. The forward-looking detail was a natural fit in the story and, to be sure, speculation isnt inherently bad. But amid the Beltways hypercompetitive media market, such details quickly mutate into rampant, often empty conjecture that finds its way into written pieces.
In news stories following NPRs report, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, and Reuters listed possible candidates without naming a favorite. But analyses published soon after instead gravitated toward NPRs Verrilli claim, including The Los Angeles Times, which prefaced its speculation with particularly lax sourcing: Some observers believe WSJ.com devoted a short post to Verrilli being back in the spotlight. And within a few hours, Yahoo News and The Daily Beast labeled the solicitor general the leading candidate emphasis added while analyses at the Post and Vox called him the frontrunner. All of these stories either cited NPRs reporting or referenced anonymous sources.
But it didnt end there, as evident by the Washington Examiners piece: On Wednesday, two names surfaced as possible replacements: Solicitor General Donald Verrilli and Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick. While Patrick served as an assistant attorney general under President Bill Clinton, its unclear from the Examiner piece whether it was administration officials or simply other journalists who had floated his name in todays discussion. On WSJ.com, meanwhile, a blog post stated, without sourcing, that Patrick was instantly anointed as the favorite to succeed Mr. Holder. Politico called him one much talked-about contender while NBC reported that the Massachusetts governor was the top name always mentioned to possibly replace Holder. Readers cant help but wonder whether the sources referenced in such stories are simply other stories.
Perhaps the emptiest speculation came from a BuzzFeed post, Team Kamala Harris Sees Path to D.C. After Holder Resignation. The piece, suggesting Californias attorney general as a Holder replacement, quotes a Harris backer who heads a nonprofit advocacy group and a press release from Harris herself.
Of course, any of the names mentioned above could very well head the Justice Department one day. And its a reporters job to analyze the administrations thought process, especially when it comes to filling cabinet positions. But until speculation is backed up with real insightand named sourcesspeculation is merely a shot in the dark.
Correction: An earlier version of this story referred to NPR as National Public Radio. The latter changed its name to NPR in 2010.
