Phoenix police seek possible victims of alleged voyeuristic handyman - October 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

PHOENIX -- Phoenix police are asking for the public's help in identifying possible victims of a handyman suspected of installing cameras and recording people in various states of undress.

Detectives began investigating Matthew Singer, 42, in March for allegations of child/sexual abuse, according to Sgt. Jonathan Howard. He currently is in custody.

Howard said during the investigation, detectives discovered evidence of additional crimes possibly committed by Singer involving victims who have yet to be identified and likely are unaware of their involvement.

Singer is employed as a local handyman and has worked on several remodel and renovation projects, according to Howard. Investigators believe Singer installed concealed cameras during his work and has recorded multiple victims in various states of undress, apparently without their knowledge or consent.

Investigators reportedly found more than 50 videos inside his northwest Phoenix home, which he apparently shares with his wife and her children.

"It makes me very ill that someone like that is in our neighborhood," one neighbor said.

An 80-Foot Inflatable Tree in Paris Looks a Lot Like a Giant Butt Plug - October 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

'Tree', Paul McCarthy's monumental artwork at Place Vendome on Oct. 16 in Paris, France.

    Shield your eyes, art aficionados.

A giant inflatable sculpture was erected in Place Vendme in Paris, France, on Oct. 16, and ever since, it has been making waves for locals and tourists alike. The reason may be fairly obvious: The sculpture, called "Tree," looks suspiciously like giant butt plug.

Paul McCarthy's piece of art, which measures roughly 80 feet tall, was installed as part of a contemporary art fair. Despite McCarthy's insistence that his work is simply meant to resemble a Christmas tree, people can't keep their minds out of the gutter.

Some, including those from a movement called the "French Spring" (Printemps Franais), were humiliated by the installation.

(Rough translation: Place Vendome is disfigured! Paris is humiliated!)

But others can't take enough hilarious pictures of themselves hanging out next to a giant sex toy in a public square.

At Home Living: Fall weed control helps prevent spring outbreak - October 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Weeds are bullies. Yes, sireee bob. Some lie in wait for an opportune moment while others erupt seemingly overnight. I have been strong-armed by more weeds that I care to say. Weeds are nothing more that plants out of place, says some gardening philosopher. I say, that philosopher has never met my weeds. They are rude, crude thugs that intimidate my lawn and flowers. A plant out of place, my foot!

It took me some time to calm this person down but when I did this gardener got a grip on how to handle pesky weeds in the fall. (Some days my job is harder than other days.) Bully weeds no longer torture this person. If you are feeling bullied by your weeds here are some suggestions.

Early November is an excellent time to control those pesky cool season weeds and give us a head start on the weeds in spring. Dandelions are more easily controlled now than in spring because they are actively moving materials from the top portion of the plant to the roots. Herbicides will translocate to the roots as well and will kill the plant from the roots up. Treating perennial broadleaf weeds, such as dandelions, chickweed, and henbit now while they are young will also allow the turf to fill in the open spots and make spring weed germination more difficult.

Herbicides such as 2,4-D or combination products (Trimec, Weed-B-Gon, Weed-Out) that contain 2,4-D, MCPP and Dicamba can take the guess work out of weed control. Broadleaf weeds that are not controlled by 2,4-D are usually controlled by one of the other herbicides. For example, 2,4-D provides excellent control of dandelion and plantain, but provides poor control of white clover or red sorrel. Dicamba, on the other hand, provides excellent control of white clover and red sorrel and only fair control of dandelion or plantain. By applying a combination of these two, all four weeds will be controlled. Combination products dont necessarily control all broadleaf weeds in your yard. It is possible to choose the wrong combination of herbicides (i.e. 2,4-D+MCPP instead of 2,4-D + MCPP + Dicamba) and some weeds are just naturally hard to control. This is why it is important to identify the weeds before purchasing products to eradicate them.

Do not apply broadleaf herbicides within 4-6 weeks before seeding and not until the new grass has been mowed at least twice.

Choose a day that is 50 degrees or higher to apply herbicides.

With liquid or soluble broadleaf herbicides, do not mow for several days before and after the application to allow for maximum uptake and translocation of the herbicide.

Do not add grass clippings to the compost pile that have been treated with a herbicide. Residuals can kill good plants in your garden in spring.

Do not water for at least 24 hours after application, and do not treat if rain is expected within 24 hours.

Always read and follow the herbicide label instructions carefully to maximize the efficiency of your application. Remember, more is not always better. It is possible to make weed infestation worse!

College Park residents, UM students reimagine Route 1 — Gazette.Net - October 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Bill Ryan/The Gazette

Dean Bonnie Thornton Dill addresses the Think-A-Thon, an Oct. 11 brainstorming event for a more vibrant and walkable Route 1, sponsored by the Center for Synergy at UMDs College of Arts and Humaninties, at the College Park Community Center.

College Park residents and students at the citys University of Maryland gathered Saturday to brainstorm a more pedestrian-friendly U.S. Route 1 with music-filled gazebos, tree lined-sidewalks and a grocery store.

The Think-A-Thon meeting at the College Park Community Center yielded outlines, sketches, lists and a lot of notes as about 60 people among them university staff and elected officials sat down to find creative solutions to the challenges of Route 1.

In their discussions, attendees tried to address challenges such as too much traffic and a lack of independently-owned businesses, and tried to reimagine Route 1 as a space with more aesthetically-pleasing architecture, spaces for people to linger, art and music.

The event, organized by the Center for Synergy at the universitys college of Arts & Humanities, is modeled on previous Think-A-Thons held in Baltimore.

The core idea is how to use the strategies and theories of the arts and humanities to address cultural and social problems, said Sheri Parks, director of the Center for Synergy. When you talk about arts and culture, its a very easy way to enter dangerous spaces.

Parks said organizers framed the discussion early on by asking attendees to consider the roles of arts and culture in the redesign of Route 1. Once the different stakeholders began the discussion, she said they brought up other issues crime, family life, business development and food but the conversation focused on solutions rather than problems.

Route 1 needs to focus more on pedestrians...the streetscape. Trees would be nice, said Liesl Koch of College Park. Maybe if we started calling Route 1 Baltimore Avenue maybe it would create a momentum of its own.

Koch said the reason for her suggestion is the word avenue implies a more walkable space rather than a cut-through for motorists.
