Crews Begin Demolition Of Packard Plant - October 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

DETROIT(AP) Demolition started Friday on a section of the massive and crumbling DetroitPackard auto factory complex a symbol of the citys blight and past manufacturing glory.

A high reach demolition excavator was used to rip out reinforced concrete exterior wall and floor supports.

Resembling a large toothy metal claw, the heavy equipment also sent chunks of wood, brick and concrete crashing to the closed-off street below.

Fridays work was meant to make the area safer for the community, but also safer for our workers that are going to be here on site, said Kari Smith, Packard project manager.

Peruvian developer Fernando Palazuelo bought the 40-acre site last year for $405,000 at a Wayne County tax foreclosure auction. He wants to bring in apartments, retail, high-tech entrepreneurs, light industrial operations and artist studios.

Palazuelo told The Associated Press in June that the total redevelopment cost should be near $350 million. It would be paid with rent he receives from his projects in Lima, he said.

Built in the early 1900s, the Packard plant was designed by Albert Kahn. The company became a dominant luxury carmaker in the United States in the late 1920s and by the 1940s had 36,000 employees.

The last auto was made there in the mid- to late-1950s and the various buildings eventually were used as warehouses, other manufacturing and small industrial projects.

Former owners failed to pay thousands of dollars in back taxes. City officials have said razing the structures and cleaning out polluted soil could cost as much as $20 million.

We have clear ownership, Smith said. Taxes are paid and now were moving forward with redevelopment. The whole thing takes time when youre dealing a project of this size.

Wrigley Field bleachers now blast from past - October 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

We all have seen the White House, the Golden Gate bridge, the Las Vegas strip and other American landmarks destroyed in various sci-fi movies. And now we have a real-life version of a Wrigley Field Apocalypse, and it's very photogenic indeed.

The idea of a new Wrigley has been debated for years, but now that it's happening, Cubs fans owe it to themselves to make a trip to Wrigleyville to get a good look at the iconic bleachers coming down. Even though we knew it was coming, it's a jarring sight to behold.

A trip to the ballpark Friday morning found a dozen or so people milling around, taking photos on cameras and smartphones from behind a fence on Waveland Avenue. Most of the outer wall of left field already was torn down, leaving chunks of broken-up granite and twisted guard rails lying in piles on a street Cubs fans turned into a giant mosh pit during the 2003 National League Championship Series.

Unfortunately, the workers installed green netting around the fences surrounding the project, forcing the photographers to find small openings or to hold their cameras high over the fence and just take random shots without framing them.

Being a devoted tree climber, I decided to trek up one on a Waveland Avenue parkway for a better view. It was my own makeshift rooftop club, albeit with a capacity of one and no payout to the Cubs.

It was from my perch up high that I realized the Cubs were denying fans a beautiful bird's-eye view of the renovation, while also missing out on a great revenue-enhancing opportunity for the organization.

All the Cubs really need to do to aid the curiosity-seekers and make a little money is set up some temporary bleachers on the street, much like ones they use in football stadiums. They could charge viewers a dollar or two for a perfect view of the wreckage, and maybe put it toward signing free agent Jon Lester.

The Cubs could sell the naming rights to a brewery, sell hot chocolate and hot dogs on the corner of Sheffield and Waveland avenues, and put up a few port-a-potties.

Whether you supported the modernization of Wrigley or not, it's fascinating to see the ballpark resemble a war zone, and TV just doesn't do it justice. These bleachers aren't just any cheap seats; they're a piece of Chicago history, built in 1937 after a 12-year period with no bleachers.

"The old bleachers in left field were the happy target of Hack Miller, Cub slugger of a decade and a half ago," the Tribune reported in '37. "They were torn out when it developed that the Cubs had fewer sluggers who could reach the area than were on the rosters of visiting teams."

SAHBA's Fall Home & Garden Show starts today - October 18, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

One sure sign that fall has arrived in Tucson is the return of the Southern Arizona Home Builders Association Home & Garden Show, which starts at 10 a.m. today at the Tucson Convention Center downtown.

The TCC has been converted into 350,000 square feet of exhibit space for about 300 vendors to mingle with consumers looking for ideas on home-improvement trends, outdoor living and remodeling ideas.

Home-show organizers are mixing it up this season with a couple of new events, such as hourly culinary showcases presented by Tucson Originals restaurants.

Every hour were gonna feature different local restaurants on the stage and have a chef presentation, said Noel Kurtz, the home-show director. And theyll give a free sample of what they just cooked.

Another new feature is Home Show Happy Hour, where attendees will be able to sample wine and beer from local wineries and breweries, from 4 to 7 p.m. today. There is no additional cost to partake in the tasting.

JoAnn Fabric and Crafts will take the crafting stage for the first time, offering workshops on cake decorating, paper crafting, sewing, knitting and crocheting, as well as presenting kids make it and take it craft sessions.

Home Depot returns to the home show, offering workshops on concrete repair and rapid set, gardening, roof maintenance and home security.

Vendors arent limited to the home-improvement sector, Kurtz said. You can buy tons of stuff in the arts and crafts area. We have wine vendors, jewelry, chocolate, you name it. If you dont have to do anything to your house, you can Christmas-shop here if you want.

Many vendors will offer giveaways and special home-show offers, including the chance to win a custom University of Arizona pool table from Diamond Billiards & Games or a custom set of golf clubs from Superior Golf Products.
