MIRI: The retaining wall of a drain at a residential area in Padang Kerbau here is coming apart, and one affected resident is worried his front porch may follow suit.
The resident, who wanted to be identified only as Richard, noted that soil erosion had been happening subtly in front of his house for years, especially when it rained.
I have been staying here for years, and I have seen how the retaining wall gradually gives way because of loosen soil.
As a temporary solution, Richard recently secured the retaining wall with a few pieces of wood and covered the exposed area with a piece of nylon canvas.
The Borneo Post noticed that lalang (long weed) and soil had blocked several parts of the retaining wall along the road intersection to Padang Kerbau, near Boulevard Roundabout.
Padang Kerbau and Boulevard are very busy areas, especially during peak hours.
I wonder how the authority, particularly the Public Works Department, could be oblivious to the condition of the drains here, said Richard, hoping that the problem could be fixed promptly.

Mayor believes there is not immediate risks to households in the area
Residents living on Snows Drive in Wabush received a letter today stating land near their homes may be considered unsafe under certain conditions.
Breaking News
The Town of Wabush has received complaints concerning the retaining wall on Snows Drive and land moving on the other side of the road for a number of years.
Wabush Mayor Colin Vardy said the council decided it was time to act, and hired a consultant Stantec to look into the problem. After drilling for soil composition of the bank and where it may slide, Stantec reported back their findings to the town, which immediately sent the study to the towns lawyers and internal engineer.
This is something weve only recently discovered, Vardy said. Were letting the residents know in a timely process. This isnt something weve been sitting on.
The six-foot-tall metal retaining wall was installed by a developer without the towns input, Vardy said.
The town did not request to have the wall installed, nor did we issue any permits for it. The wall does not belong to us, nor was it put there by our request.
Vardy added the town is looking into whos accountable and whos responsible to fix it.
We want to protect the residents any way we can and we want to make sure were not accepting responsibility of development which isnt our responsibility.

Not to worry! Youre in good company. Heres some other lost things:
Its an unfortunate but common loss. Like your keys and your luggage, your TV remote control has been sucked into a twillight zone, never to return until you go through the trouble of replacing it.
It could have been the fault of a sudden power surge, a hasty keyword shortcut, or the dreaded swirling umbrella. Cheer up, weve all been there.
The Dodo (Raphus cucullatus) is an extinct flightless bird said to be common on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius. No one noticed that the cousin to the pigeon and dove was missing until 1662, and some even thought it a mythical creature especially with its mention in the tale Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.
