Jose Pineda, a technician with ServPro, examines the black mold in a closet of an apartment in Montgomery Village.
When tenant Tawanna King discovered mold in a corner at the top of her hall closet and beneath the kitchen sink in the condo she rents in the Center Court complex on Stedwick Road in Montgomery Village, she knew she had to do something.
King had developed breathing problems because of mold in a previous apartment in Burtonsville, and she didnt want to risk a return of the condition.
I fought too hard to get [better], she said. I dont need a setback.
But like many renters, she wasnt sure how serious the situation was or what to do about it. She said she hopes that talking publicly about her experience will help others.
I feel in my heart that a lot of people dont know about it, or who to call about it, she said. It needs to be brought to light.
Mold grows where there is moisture and functions like a fuzzy dandelion when disturbed, it releases invisible spores that spread in every direction.
If left to grow, which it quickly does in wet conditions, it can cause breathing problems, especially for people with asthma, according to the Maryland Department of the Environment.
King, who does not have renters insurance, called her landlord, Karim Atarzada of Montgomery Village, who owns two units in the 132-unit Center Court complex.

Pumpkins with a purpose?
Theyre teal and you might be seeing some around central Ohio during Halloween season.
The bluish-green squashes mark homes where nonfood treats will be handed out on Beggars Night. They are part of the Teal Pumpkin Project, a movement that aims to make Halloween less scary for kids with food allergies and their parents.
The effort, which originated in Knoxville, Tenn., has gained momentum this month after the Virginia-based nonprofit Food Allergy Research & Education posted information on its Facebook page and blog.
Teal is the color of choice for food-allergy awareness.
Doug Sutherlin, 75, creates a prolific amount of bold mosaic artwork at his home across from Corbin Park, and now his signature pieces sprinkle color across neighbors yards andporches.
His canvases include fence posts, window panes, even ordinary ceramic tiles. Using super-strength construction adhesive, he covers surfaces with brightly-colored glass stones in a mosaic pattern, sometimes adding in figurines or other decorativeelements.

VILLAGERS are set to take the significant first step in the building of their new church after fundraising for more than a decade.
The community at Crossways has been working together for years to build their own church to house a growing congregation and a special First Turf Turning ceremony will be held to mark the construction finally getting underway.
The building of St Aldhelms Church is expected to be completed by Easter 2015.
Crossways resident Simon Hunt said: This most exciting step marks the beginning of a new chapter in the progress of Crossways parishioners to establish a permanent and lasting base for worship and associated activities. To have reached this point has not been without much effort, hard work and perseverance of many, many people.
Villagers have raised more than 100,000 towards the new church, which will be spent on maintenance and running of the building.
Mr Hunt added that people across the community had been involved, many of whom are a silent majority of stalwarts.
The new building will be sited at land at Frome Valley CE VA First School.
The Reverend Jacquie Birdseye, of the united benefice of Moreton, Woodsford, Crossways and Tincleton, was appointed to oversee the building of the new church around nine years ago.
She is currently on sabbatical until early November.
Planning permission was granted by West Dorset District Council in September last year.
