Which animal signs are 'lucky' in Year of the Sheep - October 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MANILA - Want to know what's in store for you for 2015? Will it still be a bad time to start a new relationship? Will conflicting countries reach their boiling point? A feng shui expert revealed her predictions for the coming Year of the Sheep.

In a press conference held on Wednesday, Maritess Allen explained that the forecasts for the Year of the Sheep -- officially starting on February 19 -- are better than the previous lunar year.

"It is not super perfect but at least we are getting there. In a scale of 1 to 10, we are on a 6 or a 7 so we are in an ascending order, which is a very good sign," she said.

Allen revealed that the feng shui chart for 2015 features all five elements, namely: wood, metal, fire, earth, and water, adding that this is a "very rare and an unusual phenomenon."

And while 2014 was filled with misunderstandings leading to conflicts, especially in new relationships and between countries, the brand new year will be a more calm one, according to Allen.

    'Lucky signs'

Allen went on to share which animal signs are "lucky" during the Year of the Sheep.

Aside from those who are born in the year, people under the Horse and the Monkey animal signs are predicted to get the blessing of the "prosperity star," which is associated with good fortune, she said.

Other animal signs that are predicted to be "lucky" next year are the Rat, which will have the "wealth star," and the Tiger and the Ox.

Those born under the latter two are said to receive "unexpected gifts" in 2015.

A new beginning - October 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sept. 9 is a very auspicious day in the Chinese calendar as it is the last day of the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. This year, however, the day was especially bittersweet as it marked the end of an era: the iconic Mandarin Oriental Manila, home of the Yin & Yang Shop of Harmony for the past 14 years, has closed its doors. But as the saying goes, when one door closes another door opens. The shop, through the mother and daughter team Baby and Princesse Fernandez, Chased The Moon during this enchanting evening by gathering together friends, family, loyal clients, and patrons at the opening of their new home at the New World Makati Hotel. The Yin & Yang Shop of Harmony was established in 1998 in partnership with the late great Feng Shui Master Paul Lau Tak Lun from Hong Kong. He, along with Jullie Yap Daza on her popular Tell the People TV show, revolutionized the way people view Feng Shui and Chinese traditions and made the practice of Feng Shui more accessible.

Demolition to Begin on Former Temple in Carbondale - October 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A problem property in the city of Carbondale is about to have a date with the wrecking ball.

City leaders say demolition is about to begin on the former Masonic Temple property on Salem Avenue.

Carm Galati's family has run a barber shop on Salem Avenue in Carbondale since 1917.

Galati is happy to hear the old Masonic Temple property will soon be coming down.

"It's long overdue. Somebody is going to get hurt over there if they leave it standing much longer," Galati said.

From a tarp and netting that no longer cover the top floor to weeds that have overtaken the sidewalk, city officials say they just received the deed to the property on Friday and are finalizing construction contracts.

Demolition crews should be at the site within the next week or two.

"At this point it seems to be dangerous and an eyesore," John Custard of Carbondale said.

City officials say the building has been a problem for the last decade.

The first problems began to surface in 2004 but got worse in 2006 when pieces of the building's faade crashed down onto the sidewalk below.

Demolition of Nuisance Building Brings Relief, Frustration to W-B Neighborhood - October 12, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County -- A Brdaric Excavating crew showed up Thursday morning in Wilkes-Barre to begin demolishing what once was a nine unit apartment building on North Welles Street. As workers used heavy equipment to dismantle the mostly brick and wood structure, a sense of relief came to many neighbors. "It's a good thing because there's people living there, because of the fire," said Rev. Anthony Vieney of Wilkes-Barre.

Fire swept through the apartment building last November making it uninhabitable. It was eventually boarded up but that didn't seem to stop intruders. "Every once in awhile, I noticed that there was plywood taken down. People were trying to make entry, possible squatters," said Jim Post who lives just down the street from the building.

The demolition should be a relief to every neighbor including Noel Miller who lives next door. He described the decision to take down the building as "very good." But what he said was far from good is what was being done to spare him any property damage during the demolition. Mr. Miller voiced his concern on scene to city officials and our camera. "He's definitely going to damage the roof the same way he damaged the back one."

Mr. Miller said demolition debris already damaged his shed and fence because a protective tarp wasn't secured. "If it was anchored, my property wouldn't be damaged." City leaders say the protection is sufficient for a demolition that is necessary. "My concern is getting the building down safely and cleaning the site and returning it back to the city asset," said Wilkes-Barre Assistant Director of Operations Mike Simonson. The entire neighborhood seems to be in agreement with that. "I think it will be nice to have it gone and have something put there so there's something productive in the neighborhood," said Rev. Vieney while Mr. Post added, "Just a parking lot would be better than what it is right now."

The entire demolition should be completed Friday while removal of the debris is expected to take a few weeks. The city stresses that Brdaric Excavating is responsible for any damages caused during the project.
