Theres a tree trimming backlog of about two years in Chicago, a top aide to Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Tuesday.
Charles Williams, commissioner of the Department of Streets and Sanitation, offered that estimate during a break in City Council hearings on the mayors proposed 2015 budget. Earlier, aldermen had pressed Williams on the issue of the tree trimming backlog, which results in a lot of complaints from the people they represent.
Emanuel has set aside an extra $500,000 in overtime next year for Streets and Sanitation workers to remove trees during 30 weekend shifts, but its unclear whether that will free up workers during the week and allow them to clear the backlog.
Were certainly going to try, said Williams, who noted that the city has trimmed and removed more trees to date this year than it did last year but also has faced a heavier burden because of the emerald ash borer and one particularly nasty storm. Were going to make every effort, he said.
Ald. Scott Waguespack, 32nd, noted that on occasion the city has to pay out a big lawsuit award because of someone injured by a falling tree. We end up paying more in settlements than we do in the overall tree trim budget, Waguespack said. Thats (why) I hope we can hammer out these in this next year.
In April, the council approved a $5.75 million settlement on behalf of Erick Leon, who was paralyzed from the waist down when a tree limb fell on him in 2011 on a Lincoln Park street after he made a food delivery. The city had received numerous requests to remove dead branches from the tree that date to at least October 2010, according to documents filed in the lawsuit.
If we find one in worse condition than the other one, were certainly going to move that one up on the list, Williams responded. We do make priorities of those. ... If were aware of it, were taking it down. Thats always a priority.

BOSTON A recent decision by the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Freeman v. Dal-Tile Corp., serves as a reminder that employers can potentially be held liable not only for sexual or other harassment perpetrated by their own employees, but also for harassment carried out by third parties, such as employees of customers, vendors or other business associates.
In Freeman, the plaintiff claimed that she was subjected to a sexually and racially hostile work environment due to the actions of an employee of one of her employers distributors.
Reversing a grant of summary judgment for the employer, the 4th Circuit concluded that a jury could reasonably find that the company knew or should have known about the harassment and failed to respond appropriately.
Other courts, including the 1st Circuit and the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, have similarly recognized third-party harassment claims. Thus, employers need to be vigilant for potential instances of third-party harassment and ensure that they respond promptly and appropriately to any such issues.
Factual background
The plaintiff, Lori Freeman, a black female, worked as a customer service representative for Dal-Tile Corp. As part of her duties, Freeman regularly interacted with Timothy Koester, a sales representative for one of Dal-Tiles distributors.
In the course of their interactions, Koester allegedly showed Freeman pictures of naked women on his cellphone and used racial and sexual epithets, including referring to black women as black b*****s and using the n word.
Freeman repeatedly discussed Koesters conduct with her supervisor, who also witnessed some of the offensive incidents. The supervisor expressed disapproval of Koesters actions but failed to take any concrete steps to address them.
After three years of enduring Koesters behavior, Freeman complained to Dal-Tiles HR department. In response, Dal-Tile initially banned Koester from its facility but later allowed him to return, on the condition that he not communicate with Freeman and coordinate his on-site meetings through Freemans supervisor.
After taking a two-month medical leave of absence for anxiety and depression, Freeman resigned from Dal-Tile. She later filed suit in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, alleging, in part, that Dal-Tile had violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by tolerating a racially and sexually hostile work environment created by Koesters actions.

Right at Home: Latest in tile design includes artifice as well as artistry
Tile has a rich and varied history in decor, from Roman floor mosaics to majolica to Delft ceramics to Mexican terracotta.
These styles and more continue to inspire artistry. Many of the newest collections of ceramic and porcelain tile were on display this fall at the five-day Cersaie international exhibition in Bologna, Italy.
Some of the trends:
MASTER IMPOSTORS
Across the show, faux finishes ruled. What seemed to be barnwood or other timber planking was actually porcelain. Manufacturers can now produce tile that looks and even feels like wood, marble, granite or cement, but is thin and lightweight.
The application advantages are obvious: A 20-foot slab of slim porcelain printed to look like stone is a lot easier to make and install than the real thing. It can be wrapped up kitchen islands, walls and even ceilings, and is easily cut to accommodate plugs or faucets.
Advancements in digital printing have taken faux finishes a long way from earlier versions that looked unrealistic and one-dimensional. Now the detail is more precise, the image is embedded deep in the tile, and the surface texture is transformed.
In the U.S., the Reclamation collection from Crossville, based in Crossville, Tennessee, is comprised of an urban-industrial mix of cement and tiles that look like salvaged wood in colorways with names like Steel City, Cotton Exchange and Tobacco Road. (www.crossvilleinc.com )

Wendy has lived and worked in Missionand the surrounding area since 1974.
She worked for many years in forestry. Later, whilegrowing her own a landscaping& tile-setting business, in 1986 Wendy has a son Christopher, who has since worked part time in the businesses Wendy has also started an organic home greenhouse business. Currently Wendy has served for 2 terms as the elected rural Director for Area C in the FVRD; a position shes held since 2008. If elected as Missions mayor Wendy would turn her businesses over to her son to run in order to devote full time to political work.
Issues:
I will work towards a more engaged, responsible, community inclusive, civil and transparent governance.
1.A vibrant downtown is the centerpiece of a thriving and cohesive community. I fullysupport thecommitment to revitalize the downtown. The plan must be realistic and affordablystaged. It must include addressing issues of the homeless and affordable housing. More work needs to bedone to address parking and traffic flow issues to ensure the plan addresses present challenges while anticipating future needs.Improve and expand public infrastructure:I will work to address transportation issues on the highway route, while keeping in mind expansion options for future rapid rail. 90
2.Enhance and protect the local economy: I believe we can offer incentives to promote community resilience and job creation locally, that could include retrofits for energy conservation and the growing renewable economies that would include energy retrofits and local food security.Mission has tremendous assets that need to be supported and optimized, including a world class fishing and tourism industry, a major university, and some of the best farmland in the Fraser Valley. As one of two directors that did not vote in favor of the FVRD raises in directors pay. If elected as mayor of Mission I will donate my Mission Mayor and FVRD raise amounts to start sustainability initiatives. 111
3.Healthy community policies:My son was born at Mission Memorial Hospital 28 years ago when it was one of the best full service hospitals in B.C. I remain as committed to lobbying to restoring acute care services for our community. We need to prepare for growing health care needs. I want to be more proactive in ensuring a healthy environment for all Mission citizens. We must address potable water issues while improving delivery systems. We need to address the social issues and needs for the young and aging populations. We need to develop strategies to build more affordable housing. 99

GLENDALE, AZ - A police report sheds new light on accusations a Valley family is making against the Glendale Fire Department.
In an interview with ABC15 Monday, a Glendale family accused firefighters of using excessive force on their mentally ill son after they called for help on Sunday.
A neighbor caught the encounter on camera as it unfolded in the Murillos' front yard in front of several witnesses.
In the video, you can hear firefighters yelling at 30-year-old James Murillo, who is strapped to a gurney.
According to a police report, while firefighters were trying to restrain James, he punched his father in the face with a closed fist.
"You're a f***ing dead meat b****, I'm gonna have you for everything you have you piece of s***," said an unidentified firefighter.
James' parents say he took too much medication and started having seizures. He was diagnosed as bipolar, schizophrenic and has multiple personality disorder.
The report goes on to say firefighters told Murillo to stop and tried to restrain him at which point he punched two firefighters in the face and upper body.
The report states James continued throwing punches, causing a gurney to fall to the ground during the struggle.
Both firefighters said they struck James with closed fists five to six times to stop him from assaulting them, and immediately called police for assistance.

LUNCHTIME supervisor Dawn Hyland was devastated when her mother Mary suffered a stroke.
Concerned for her own health, the mother-of-two, from Grange Lane, Wolstanton, went to her GP for a check-up after hitting the age of 40.
Dawn, now 41, was told she was at high risk of suffering from stroke as well, but was given a lifeline when she was referred to Weight Watchers for a three-month trial.
A year on and three stone six pounds lighter Dawn says it is a decision she will never regret.
"My mum suffered from a stroke and it's a dreadful thing. She has recovered but will be on medication for the rest of her life.
"I had a doctor's appointment about a year ago and I was telling the nurse about it and she said that I should have some more tests to see if I was at risk too, with me being 40.
"I had blood tests and cholesterol tests and all of the results came back too high, so the nurse told me that if I lost some weight then the risk might not be as high."
Dawn went to classes at Wolstanton Workingmen's Club and started to see the pounds drop off immediately.
She said: "The diet really suited me. I love cooking anyway so I just increased my intake of fruit and vegetables and reduced my portion sizes.
